X-Ray diffraction for materials characterization
(Theory: Dr. Miguel Avalos, Practical Session: M. Sc. Beatriz Rivera)
X-ray diffraction is a very versatile research tool that can be used on a wide variety of materials; it
can be applied for phase identification, degree of crystallinity and cell parameters calculation,
among others. However it is ideal for the analysis of polycrystalline powder samples. The aim of
this course is to explore the possibilities of using X-ray Diffraction as a tool for obtaining
information from the crystalline materials of interest. To carry out this task we are reviewing the
theory on the following topics:
• Basic principles of X-ray diffraction
• Instrumentation
• Effect of crystal size
• Degree of crystallinity
• Phase identification by comparison
• Determination of thin film thickness
• Fundamentals of Rietveld refinement
• Databases and software
There will be a practical session where students will analyze their own samples. We will also
review topics on sample mounting and preparation, routine analysis, use of software and
database, as well as health and safety issues.
Scanning electron microscopy for materials characterization
(PhD. Gladis J. Labrada Delgado)
Theoretical and practice course related to the basics of scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
oriented to understand the interaction between the electronic beam and the samples interface.
The basic configuration of the SEM´s column will be explained as well as the different signals
obtained from the electron beam incidence with the samples: secondary electron images,
backscattering electron images and elemental composition spectrums obtained by energy
dispersive X- ray spectroscopy. The infrastructure of the LINAN in this field will be described and a
practice on the ESEM (environmental scanning electron microscope) and UHRSEM (ultra high
resolution SEM) will be performance.
