REGULARS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
DEAR MEMBERS
Time has flown by and we are already in 2015! I hope
everyone had a good start to the year. As you know,
2015 marks the 60th anniversary of the Club. An
organizing committee for the celebration has been
formed and we will be sharing with you in the next
issue, the activities and events lined up to celebrate
this significant occasion. I look forward to your
participation in the celebrations.
I am pleased to update you that through last year’s
charity project, we have raised a total of $38,373.65
which will be split between our beneficiaries –
Sunlove Abode for Intellectually-Infirmed and
Bright Vision Hospital. It is heartening to know that
members were very supportive of this yearly project
to help the less fortunate. A special mention also
goes to SGCC staff who participated actively this
year by contributing groceries and NTUC vouchers
for the needy families in the community. Well done,
SGCC!
Just some quick updates on our sports
achievements. The SGCC golfers came in second
runner-up in the Inter-Social Clubs Golf Tournament
(ISCGT). Our Club’s darters recently participated
in the Inter-Club Darts Tournament at the Royal
Selangor Club, in which they came in third in the
Plates event. Our bowlers did well in the 15th
International Milo Bowling Competition held in
Kuala Lumpur from 21 November – 3 December
last year, with 12 out of the 16 bowlers qualified for
the finals in their respective divisions and our Club
bowler Lim Zheng Chin emerged as the champion
for the Under 15 category. I would like to extend
my congratulations to all the sportsmen and
sportswomen for their achievements.
We have a few new sports programmes lined up for
you in 2015. There will be an overseas diving trip
to Tioman from 3 – 5 April 2015. We have recently
launched some new fitness classes such as the
Vinyasa Flow Yoga – a faster-paced yoga, Piloxing
– a combination of pilates, boxing and dancing and
also a special training programme for ladies called
the Female Intensity Interval Training (FIIT). For
those who want to make good on their new year’s
resolution to keep fit, do check out these classes.
Starting February, we will be offering a Sparkling
Brunch every last Sunday of the month at Garden
Grill. This brunch comes with an international buffet
spread and unlimited servings of Prosecco. On
Valentine’s Day, we have a special menu for you to
celebrate the occasion with your spouse and loved
ones. We have also lined up Chinese New Year set
2
menus for your festive gatherings with family and
friends. The Atrium Cafe will also be selling Chinese
New Year festive delicacies such as Pen Cai and Yu
Sheng. Do check it out!
I would like to take this opportunity to express my
appreciation to members who have contributed to the
yearly Staff Ang Bao Fund. Your kind contribution is
definitely very much appreciated by our staff.
The Club will be closed on the eve of Chinese New
Year (except for the Reunion Dinner at the Kensington
Ballroom) and the first day of Chinese New Year –
18 and 19 February 2015. Don’t forget to join us for
the annual Lion and Dragon dance performance at the
Main Lobby at 12 noon when the Club re-opens on the
second day of Chinese New Year, 20 February 2015.
Here’s wishing you a very blessed and prosperous

Yours Sincerely,

This column features some of the current issues and developments in the Club
which we would like to share with you. Have any feedback to relate to us?
Email us at [email protected].
New Guest Sign-in Procedure
We have recently revamped our guest sign-in process.
Instead of a common guest sign-in list, we are using
individual guest sign-in slips so that personal data
contained will not be exposed to other members. In
addition, with the new process, members will be given
a copy of the guest sign-in slip which they need to keep
with them and show to staff for verification purposes. New Pool Table at The Hangout
We have recently replaced the pool table at The Hangout
with a new one. Come check it out!
Closing Time for Changing Rooms
Since December last year, the male and female changing
rooms located at the Palm Wing are locked at 10.30pm daily
to facilitate cleaning and preparation for the following day’s
usage.
Members are only required to sign-in their guests once
at any of the guest sign-in points: Security Guardhouse,
Main Reception, Palm Wing Reception and Club
Twenty-Two. For example, a member bringing their
guests to Atrium Cafe can sign-in their guests at Main
Reception. After the meal, the group may want to
adjourn to Club Twenty-Two. The member will need to
produce the original copy of the guest sign-in slip to the
staff at Club Twenty-Two to verify that they have signed
in their guests.

REGULARS TRAVELOGUE
My family and I celebrated
Christmas in Nagoya, Japan
two years ago. It was a one week
free and easy trip where we visited places
such as the Toyota Factory, Noritake
Ceramic Shop, Osu Shopping Street and
Nagoya Castle. The kids loved Nagoya
as there were many fun and interesting
places for them to explore. I particularly
liked Osu Shopping Street. It is an area
that melts both the traditional culture
of Japan with the culture of today’s
youth mixed with influences from
abroad, creating an atmosphere
that’s completely distinctive. – Benita Fong

SPECIAL
The Beginnings of
the SGCC Gardening
Interest Group
Check out our first harvest
Early last year, member Paul Poh felt that something
was amiss when he was exercising at the Club’s gym.
It was the garden view outside the gym that caught
his attention. He felt that the garden needed some
sprucing up. He then asked his fellow gym “kakis” and
they all agreed.
With that in mind, one of his gym “kakis”, Clement
Puah Neo suggested that perhaps they should form
a gardening interest group where members can
bond through gardening activities and at the same
time, beautify the Club. Clement volunteered to
come up with a concept and proposed the idea to
some regular members during the Senior Members’
Gathering some time last April. During the session,
several members registered their interest and the
SGCC Gardening Interest Group was formed. The
objective of the group is to promote gardening
activities, camaraderie between members and a
healthy lifestyle through gardening.
The group worked closely with the Club’s management
to identify suitable areas for gardening. The plot of land
near the tennis courts at Heliconia Wing was identified
as one of the areas. The group met almost every day
to discuss how to make the land suitable for planting
as the soil was uneven, infertile and had lots of clay
beneath and also on how to sustain the expenses
of the gardening activities. The group roped in John
Hou, an award winning horticulturist as the Honorary
Consultant. Fellow gardening members, Bob Chow
and Paul Poh, who have many years of horticulture
experience from tending to their gardens at home,
gave some valuable input as well.
Working on the soil
Preparing the plot for
planting
Then with a plan in place, the group sought the help
of the Club to purchase organic soil and worms to
make organic compost for the garden. The group
also brought their gardening tools from home to work
on the land and worked daily from 7.30am – 10am
to prepare three plots to plant their very first crop –
spinach (bayam). Under the tender loving care of the
group, the spinach was soon ready to be harvested.
The group then shared their first harvest with fellow
senior members during the once-a-month Senior
Members’ Gathering last November.
In order to sustain their gardening activities, the group
was very resourceful and creative. They made nettings
to screen out pests instead of relying on pesticides,
sought donations of gardening equipment, sourced for
recycled materials and turned them into useful items
for the garden and even organized the sale of compost
for members so that they can achieve better cost
savings through bulk purchase.
In their continuous effort to promote gardening
activities, the group would like to invite more
members to join the interest group. They plan to grow
vegetables, legumes, gourds, herbs, fruit trees and
flowering plants. The group also has plans to conduct
visits to various parks, organise workshops conducted
by horticulture experts and to share their experiences
and knowledge with fellow members.

• The sight, smell and sounds of the garden promote relaxation and reduce stress

FIIT Programme Structure
Female Intensity Interval Training (FIIT) Workout
(10am – 10.40am)
FIIT Workout is a form of interval training that combines elements
of Korean-pop dance moves with fitness moves. The movements
are simple yet highly intensive as it alternates periods of short
intense exercises with less-intense recovery periods. It is a form
of cardiovascular exercise which helps to increase stamina and
metabolism rate while strengthening all areas of the body.
Fit Training (10.40am – 11.20am)
Fit Training is categorized as a cardio workout and consists solely
of body weight exercises. The exercises performed (at least 8-10
exercises); the amount of weight lifted and the repetitions and sets
determine the intensity of the workout. Fit Training is advantageous
as no equipment is needed, it improves stamina, tones various
muscle groups and increases metabolism.
Fit Box (11.20am – 12pm)
Fit Box is a killer workout which alleviates contact with all pad
work, punching bags, and gloves. It is a high-intensity cardio
workout which exerts the spirit and physical demands of a
kickboxer, yet, moves have been tailored to greatly reduce the
possibility of injury. Fit Box boosts fat–burning capabilities, as well
as channelling energy into a challenging, calorie-scorching, yet fun
cardiovascular activity.

Charity Dinner cum Auction
6 November 2014
Arrival of Guest-of-Honour, Club Patron Ms Sylvia Lim and partner
Mr Quah Kim Song
‘Live’ band Care N Share
The Club extended a helping hand to the needy within our
community by supporting the Bright Vision Hospital and
Sunlove Abode for Intellectually-Infirmed as its adopted
charities for 2014. The funds raised were divided equally
among the two beneficiaries. We also collaborated with
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul to collect food items
and NTUC vouchers for purchasing of groceries for lowincome families in our community.
This year’s Charity Dinner cum Auction was a sell-out
with all 30 tables taken up. Our Club Patron, Ms Sylvia
Lim, graced this event as our Guest-of-Honour along with
her partner Mr Quah Kim Song. The night started with an
opening address by the Chairman for our charity project
and Assistant Honorary Treasurer, Mr Peter Chia, who
thanked everyone for their support. A sumptuous 7-course
Chinese dinner was served with an interesting fanfare
item put up by the banquet team which got the audience
cheering. Next up was an exotic belly dance performance
by JE2 Consultancy Services. The beautiful belly dancers
even got the audience to dance with them. This was
followed by live band music by ‘Care n Share’ which
comprised members and their friends, including former
Club President, Leong Keng Thai, Honorary Secretary Bob
Mong and band members from Plus Factor.
Emcee Jesson invited Ms Sylvia Lim and Mr Quah Kim
Song up on stage to sing for the audience. They sang a
song each, followed by a lovely duet. Donation boxes were
filled as the couple serenaded the audience. For the much
awaited Charity Auction, we had 14 items up for auction,
featuring a south sea pearl necklace, beautiful paintings,
personalised portraits using a unique “Oil Painting”
Photography technique by the painter of light, Charlie
Lim and fancy gadgets. A total of $16,216.83 was raised
during the auction. A further $2,031 was raised through
outright cash donations and $579.44 was raised through
henna paintings by students from the School of The Arts
(SOTA), making a grand total of $29,770.87 raised through
the event. The evening continued with more music and
dancing with our live band.
We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to
the success of this event.

Charity Zumba Party
11 November 2014
We held our very first Charity Zumba Party at the Kensington Ballroom. It was a very well-received event,
attended by over 150 participants, all eager to do their bit for charity and burn those calories at the same time.
Our resident Zumba instructor, Rasidah Caudal and her friends led the party where the participants danced
to numerous songs within the one and a half hour event. The highlight of the party was the special Masala
Bhangra performance led by Rasidah and the members of the Singapore Masala Bhangra team. The invigorating
performance gave the crowd a taste of this new fitness dance. At the end of the event, we invited our Chairman
for our charity project and Assistant Honorary Treasurer, Mr Peter Chia to give out 3 lucky draw prizes, also
sponsored by Rasidah.
A total of $4,841.59 was raised during this event. We would like to thank Rasidah and friends, participants,
sponsors and staff for making this a successful party.

A Toyland Christmas at SGCC
29 November 2014
Holiday Cookie Decorating for Charity
We held a cookie decorating workshop earlier in the
day for kids aged 3-12. During the workshop, the kids
got to decorate cookies using icing, sprinkles and other
edible embellishments. Some of the kids and parents
even volunteered to sell the beautifully decorated
cookies during the Christmas Light-up event later in
the evening to raise funds for our adopted charities.
A total of $358.88 was raised during the sale. A big
thank you to all our volunteers who helped to decorate
and sell the cookies.

Christmas Light-up
The Main Lobby was filled with members and guests
all eager to catch the ever-so popular Christmas
Light-up event at the Club. This year’s theme for the
light-up was A Toyland Christmas. The Main Lobby
was beautifully decorated with items such as candy
canes, snowmen and gingerbread men. There were
Christmas food items for sampling and the sale of
Christmas cookies by the volunteers who took part in
the cookie decorating workshop held in the afternoon.
Invited guests from Bright Vision Hospital also joined
in the festivities.

Wow...looks delicious
The evening began with a ukulele performance by
Dick Yip and The Minstrels where they sang catchy
Christmas songs which hyped up the audience. Next,
we announced the results of the Christmas Outlet
Decoration Competition. The staff were very excited
and anxious as the emcee announced the winners.
With all the creativity shown, choosing this year’s
winner was a tough decision for our judges. The
winners this year were:
1st place: Atrium Cafe and Coffee Deli
2nd place: Club Twenty-Two
3rd place (tie): Garden Grill and Gardens Bowl
The evening then continued with performances by the
kids from Cambridge Child Development Centre. Up
next was the bubble-licious show, the beautiful pink
bubble fairy taught the kids how to use bubbles to
create different structures. Kids and adults also had
the chance to be inside a mega bubble.
The highlight of the evening was the light-up of our
Christmas tree in the Main Lobby. Everyone waited
in anticipation as Emcee Shake led the countdown.
Then at that magical moment, President Randy Sng,
Assistant Honorary Treasurer Peter Chia, Committee
Member Frederick Kang, General Manager Joseph
Woon and Deputy General Manager Catherine Tan
touched the pink crystal ball to light up the giant tree.

The evening could not end without the arrival of the
big man himself, Santa Claus and his handy helper, Mr

and Mr Bear appeared with a big bag of goodies.
Emcee Shake announced the arrival of the duo and
the kids rushed to get their presents from them.
Before leaving, Santa and Mr Bear along with Emcee

performance and got the children dancing as well.

Moulin Rouge - Countdown to 2015
31 December 2014
There was a tinge of romance in the air as the evening began,
with members and guests dressed to the nines to welcome 2015.
With Moulin Rouge as our theme this year, many dressed in red
and black, colours synonymous with the famous French cabaret.
This annual event attracted about 250 attendees.
Attendees gathered at the photo booth, taking lots of pictures
with feather boas and fancy masks to capture the festivity of the
evening.
To open the event, Club President, Mr Randy Sng addressed the
audience with a welcome speech, followed by an extravagant
opening and first dish fanfare, led by our very own F&B staff,
Joe and Alicia. They were decked out in themed costumes and
wowed everyone with their fancy dance moves. A sumptuous
9-course Chinese dinner then followed.
A hit amongst the crowd, live band, Locomotion provided
entertainment while our members and guests enjoyed dancing
throughout the evening.
The Moulin Rouge dancers then put on a spectacular can-can
dance, which got the audience cheering and clapping along.
Later in the evening, the well-known Donna Daniels put up a show
which also involved the audience dancing with her and showed
everyone why she’s still got it.
With midnight closing in, Emcee Chubby invited everyone on the
dance floor and the General Committee members and VIPs on
stage to start the countdown. “5, 4, 3, 2, 1” and there was a burst
of confetti which got everyone excited about the brand new year.
We would like to express our appreciation to all our sponsors who
contributed to the success of this event.

SGCC Preparatory Swim Series 2
7 December 2014
This was our second year organizing the Preparatory Swim Series. This event aims to get our swimmers
to better prepare themselves for the coming year’s swimming competitions. We tweaked the format and
introduced the 50m categories on top of the existing 100m, 200m and 400m categories. Over 90 swimmers
participated in the event, including participants from the French International School and Aquarian Aquatic
Master. The event was flagged off by Deputy Sports & Recreation Chairman Frederick Kang. We started off
with good weather but lady luck wasn't on our side as it started to pour midway. Despite the rain, we still
managed to complete the event.

Junior Bowling Programme
We have recently concluded the term for the first Junior Bowling Programme class. The kids had a great time
during the class, learning simple bowling techniques. Many parents gave wonderful compliments for this class
too. Mr Jean Nicolas Desprez, father
of Clothilde and Cassandra
commented, “It is a very good
introduction to bowling! Setting
the right bars to build strong skills
for the future.”
If you are keen to join our new
class every Friday, 3.45pm – 4.45pm
or 4.45pm – 5.45pm, contact Zaleha
at 6398 5340 or [email protected].
