Please remember in prayer… ✗ Irene Stark’s sister was killed in a car accident September 7; her funeral will be October 6. Irene’s brother-in-law is out of the hospital and the parents and child from the other car are also recovering well. Carole & Ken Jones Carole is recovering from a nasty fall at Case Manor Gregory & Agnes Bangura in Sierra Leone, fighting Ebola outbreak. Also, their mission office burned down last week. Sheila and Phil Mayville’s son-in-law Dave Yurick is recovering from a heart attack. Ken and Marj Brown’s son Bobbie Brown is recovering from surgery to repair a hole in his heart. Another son, Kenneth Brown also has health issues. Pray for Alec Remenda, KC Bowcott’s 13-year-old great-grandson, that he would have a good spirit as he undergoes a year of chemo treatment for cancer. Rev. Reg and Dale MacMillan’s daughter Naarah is being treated for abdominal cancer. Betty Irving’s great-grandniece Jenna Shearer is having seizures. John Treharne and Edith Bishop (Leola’s mother-inlaw) are in Ross hospital. Marguerite Adams-Miller, Muriel Flagler, Rosie Ingram, Lloyd Moore, Jean Treharne, and Fran Wylie at home. sewing creations is going on to compete at the district level, then possibly to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Also to Nicholas Kennedy who won a first and second place ribbon, and was third overall in Junior Baking. His chocolate chip cookies also will be going on to the district competition later this year. And congratulations to the many others in our congregation who also won ribbons at the Fair. Thanks to Brian Eberts. Paul Graham and Dave Roberts for installing a hot water tank in the basement. ~~~~~~~~~~This Week~~~~~~~~~~~ Today is Communion Sunday. Our Session invites children who have their parents’ permission to share in the Lord’s Supper. Also, loose plate offerings will help fund the compassionate service of our Care and Assistance Committee. For children, the KIDS’ CHURCH program continues this morning. “The Followers” (Grades K-6) Margaret Cosh is teaching a curriculum she has created on “The Life of Moses” for children up through grade 6. “Ignite” (Grades 7-12) will be discussing the Youth for Christ video series “Quest,” a contemporary look at how faith and life connect. They’ll study the book of John at a later date. The Women of Christ Bible Study have begun a study on the Gospel of John. Any women who’d like to join them Wednesdays at 7 p.m. are welcome. If you would like to support your local society, just drop a loonie, twonie, or loose change into the box. Information Page 3 on Alzheimer’s is also available for you to pick up. Thank you for your support. Glad Tidings is a wonderful little mission magazine produced by the Women’s Mission Society. Six times a year you can enjoy inspirational articles, book reviews and poetry, and hear from Presbyterian Church mission workers. The magazine is also available in large print. Everyone is welcome to borrow a book, read, return, and tell your friends if you enjoyed it. Audrey Coumbs recently delivered a new book In the Company of Angels, the inspiring story of the irrepressible Gertrude Rubman, founder of Roland’s Steakhouse in Peterborough. It was written by Cindy Windover, Audrey’s cousin. Highly recommended. September/October Today devotional booklets are in. October readings look at “The Cross of Jesus Christ.” Devotion author John Kuperus writes, “I have heard numberous teachings about the cross, and yet it seems like there is always more to learn and absorb.” Take a copy, and please leave $2 to cover the costs. The Board of Managers is looking for a newer, (slightly) smaller, more efficient freezer to replace the old unit downstairs. To reserve a place, leave your name and phone number with the Bobcaygeon Community Care Office 705 324 7323, ext. 300. ~~~~~~~ Mission & Stewardship~~~~~~~ Stewardship Moment: “The best strategy for giving is a two-fold approach: a basic plan combined with a willingness to consider spontaneous giving when unique opportunities arise. ” — Andy Stanley (b. 1958), pastor, author Presbyterian Mission moment… Transcribing church history in Taiwan Presbyterians Sharing supports Louise Gamble as she works with our partner church, The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, to transcribe and translate reports and correspondence of the Canadian Presbyterian North Formosa (Taiwan) Mission. This includes over 7000 documents from 1868 to 1923. The transcription is now complete and Louise and her colleague, Mr. Chen Kuan-chou, are working on translation. The documents will be divided into three volumes, the first of which covers the life of the first Canadian missionary to Taiwan, the Rev. Dr. George Leslie MacKay. These documents are records of the development of the Christian Church (at that time only Presbyterian) in North Formosa, from its missionaries’ point of view. Monday October 6 Please pray for all the communities affected by widespread flooding in Manitoba and Saskatchewan as they struggle to overcome from this disaster. Tuesday, October 7 Pray for the participants of the Middle East Study Tour as they travel this month to study the KAIROS Israel-Palestine document. Wednesday, October 8 Pray for Presbyterian World Service & Development’s continued response to the Syrian crisis, providing assistance to people who have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods due to the conflict. Thursday, October 9 Pray for military padres Mike Rundle and Daniel Forget and their families who were posted this year and are settling into new communities and work environments. Friday, October 10 Pray for congregations as they listen to stories shared by campers and Canada Youth participants. May congregations discern how to become better equipped for children and youth ministries. Saturday, October 11 Give thanks for the fall season and the vibrant beauty of autumn leaves. Sunday, October 12 Harvest Sunday Give thanks for the many blessings we enjoy in this country. May we care for those who are not as fortunate and who struggle daily for basic necessities. Page 6
