Dear brothers and sisters, on this World Mission Day my thoughts turn to all the local Churches.
Let us not be robbed of the joy of evangelization! I invite you to immerse yourself in the joy of the
Gospel and nurture a love that can light up your vocation and your mission. I urge each of you to
recall, as if you were making an interior pilgrimage, that "first love" with which the Lord Jesus
Christ warmed your heart, not for the sake of nostalgia but in order to persevere in joy. The Lord’s
disciples persevere in joy when they sense his presence, do his will and share with others their faith,
hope and evangelical charity.

If you know of a forthcoming visit to a hospital or

Couples, who consider the Cathedral as their
parish and are intending to be married, must give at
the very least six months’ notice. Please call or

Enrolment form. Dates for 2015 courses should
be available early in 2015.
Baptism
Parents wishing to have their child baptised should
complete & return a Baptism form, which is
available from Cathedral House. Please give two
months’ notice for Baptism. You will be invited to
attend a Baptism session held in Cathedral House.

benefited greatly in the past from the thoughtfulness of
both parishioners & non-parishioners who have
nominated the parish to receive funds from their

Gift aid offerings/donations: can be taken out at any

additional income to the Cathedral with no extra cost
to parishioners.
Sacrament of the Sick
Parishioners are asked to approach one of the priests
to receive the Sacrament of the Sick before being
admitted to hospital for treatment. If you are
housebound or are unable to come to Mass, the
priests will be happy to visit you in your home.

On Sunday 19th October 2014, Archbishop
Cushley will celebrate Mass in St Francis’
Xavier’s Parish Falkirk at 7.00pm and
launch the Archdiocesan Marriage Preparation
programme, a new pastoral initiative to support
couples who plan to marry in the Catholic Church.
Information about the new Archdiocesan counselling
organisation Archways will also be available. During
the Mass, married couples will have the opportunity to
renew their vows and engaged couples will be invited
forward for a blessing. Sunday the 19th marks the
final day of the Third Extraordinary Synod of Bishops,
which has been convened by Pope Francis on the
theme of The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the
Context of Evangelisation.
Many parishes and
individuals in our Archdiocese took part in the
preparation for this Synod by responding to the
Vatican consultation at the end of 2013. Everyone
throughout the Archdiocese is now warmly invited to
join the Archbishop at this celebration, to pray for the
Church’s ministry to married people and families and
to pray for those in our Archdiocese who have a
specific role in supporting marriages and families.

St Augustine’s – School Open Evening
On Wednesday 22nd October from 4.30pm to
6.30pm. The evening will begin in the Theatre with
a talk from the Head teacher, followed by a guided
tour of the school. Parents and pupils will be able
to see around the school and visit departments,
speak to some teachers and be able to see some
displays of work.

Tuesday Concerts 2014-2015
Concerts will begin on 28th October at 7.30pm. For
this concert, we will welcome back Jeremy Filsell,
who played here last February, when the concert
included Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto
(arranged for piano and organ.) This time, the
concert will feature Racmaninov’s 1st Piano
Concerto, as well as French music for piano, organ
and voice, with American lyric soprano, Rebecca
Kellerman Petretta and cathedral organist Simon
Niemiński Entry to all concerts in the series will be
free, with a retiring collection.
Aid to the Church in Need
This is the principal Catholic organisation helping
persecuted Christians and is now a Pontifical
Foundation.
At the moment Christians are
being horribly persecuted in Iraq, Syria and
throughout the Middle East. If you would like to
donate to help the hundreds of thousands
of refugees, mostly Christians, please go to –

Called to Act –
‘Catholic Social Teaching and You’
Are you between 18 and 35 and involved with the
SSVP? Then ‘Called to Act’ is for you! Bringing
together young adult Vincentians from Scotland,
Ireland and England, this event will give you the
chance to socialise, learn more about the SSVP
and your place in it and find out what you can get
involved in. The event will run from 10.30am
Saturday 1st November until 1.00pm on Sunday 2nd
November at The Conforti Institute, Calder Avenue,
Coatbridge. Cost £65 – this covers accommodation

Faith and Cosmology Conference at New
College, Edinburgh exploring the relationship
between modern cosmological science and
religious belief. Speakers include Prof Bernard
Carr, and Fr Andrew Pinsent.

SCIAF Remembrance Mass
Our annual Mass, to commemorate our supporters
who have passed away, will take place on at
1.00pm on Thursday 13th November at SCIAF

Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Joe Mackle, our
Chaplain, and there will be tea and coffee

Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Events: The
SSVDP run different events throughout the year –
masses for the sick, social afternoons and outings.
These are primarily aimed at those in our parish
who might not always find it too easy to get out and
about, whether through ill health or increasing age,
and also at those who might welcome some
company. If you think you, or someone you know,
would benefit from coming along to any of these
events, please pass contact details to the Cathedral
office (whether by note, phone or email), clearly
marked for the SSVDP, and we will be in touch.

Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar - and to

The Pharisees went away to work out between them how
to trap Jesus in what he said. And they sent their
disciples to him, together with the Herodians, to say,
'Master, we know that you are an honest man and teach
the way of God in an honest way, and that you are not
afraid of anyone, because a man's rank means nothing
to you. Tell us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay
taxes to Caesar or not?' But Jesus was aware of their
malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why do you set this
trap for me? Let me see the money you pay the tax with.'

The Innermost Truth
“I am the Lord and there is no other, there is no God
besides me.”
The god that we make of power, the domination of others
and the exercise of control over their lives, is a false god.
The god that we make of possessions, the accumulation
of wealth far beyond that required for a dignified life, is a
false god.
Second Reading
1 Thessalonians 1:1-5
We constantly remember your faith, your love and your
hope.
From Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, to the Church in
Thessalonika which is in God the Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ; wishing you grace and peace from God the
Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We always mention
you in our prayers and thank God for you all, and
constantly remember before God our Father how you
have shown your faith in action, worked for love and
persevered through hope, in our Lord Jesus Christ. We
know, brothers, that God loves you and that you have
been chosen, because when we brought the Good News
to you, it came to you not only as words, but as power
and as the Holy Spirit and as utter conviction.
The word of the Lord
The god that we make of pleasure and comfort, soothing
our senses with physical satisfaction and enjoyment, is a
false god.
The god that we make of security, lulling us to sleep in
the midst of a world filled with chaos and turmoil, is a
false god. “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, but give to
God what is God’s.” What is God’s is the only place as
God, and so we “give the Lord glory and honour. We who
belong to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ know
that all the gods of the nations are things of naught,” and
so we reject the false gods of power, possessions,
pleasure, and security. We place all our hope in the
“almighty and ever-living God” who is “our source of
power and inspiration.”
Since it has been entrusted to the Church to reveal the
mystery of God, who is the ultimate goal of man, she
opens up to man at the same time the meaning of his
own existence, that is, the innermost truth about himself.
The Church truly knows that only God, whom she serves,
meets the deepest longings of the human heart, which is
never fully satisfied by what this world has to offer.
