HRH PRINCESS ASTRID OF BELGIUM
Representative of HM the King
Belgian Economic Mission 7
HRH Princess Astrid, Princess of Belgium
was born in Brussels on 5 June 1962. She is
the second child of King Albert II and Queen
Paola, and the sister of the King.
HRH Princess Astrid is also particularly concerned by the plight of victims of violence. She
is therefore fully engaged in the efforts to ban
antipersonnel mines.
HRH Princess Astrid performs her public duties as expected within the context of the
Royal Family with particular interest for the
problems of our contemporary society.
At the request of HM the King, HRH Princess
Astrid will represent him and preside over the
economic missions to Angola and South Africa in October 2013 and to India in November 2013. It is widely recognised that missions
such as these have a positive impact on the
development of economic and trade relations
between Belgium and its regions and many
overseas partners. They also enable bridges
to be built between Belgian and foreign companies as well as between Belgian companies
themselves.
HRH Princess Astrid is also a member of the
International Paralympics Committee Honorary Board. She is also the Honorary President
of the non-profit association Damien Action.
HRH Princess Astrid studied art history at Leiden in the Netherlands. She completed her
education in Geneva, at the Institute of European Studies and in Michigan in the United
States.
As Honorary Chairwoman of the Queen Elisabeth Medical Foundation (QEMF), the European Organisation on Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Charitable Trust and
the Science and Medical Funds of the King
Baudouin Foundation, HRH Princess Astrid
supports clinical and fundamental research.
The Princess is also active in the fight against
epidemics and pandemics: i.e. as “Special
Representative” of the Roll Back Malaria partnership to fight malaria.
HRH Princess Astrid is known to be highly
concerned about persons who - through a variety of circumstances - become marginalised
citizens. She visits and encourages in many
ways those Organisations which offer assistance to those who are in need of help.
On June 20th 2013, the Secretariat of the
Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention/Ottawa
Convention announced that HRH Princess
Astrid - as Special Envoy of the Convention
- has joined a task force which will undertake
diplomatic efforts to obtain the signature of the
Convention by States not yet party to it.
Since 22 November 1996, HRH Princess
Astrid has been a member of the Belgian Senate as senator by right. She also joined the
Belgian Armed Forces on 22 May 1997. The
Princess is a Colonel in the Medical Unit.
On 22 September 1984, HRH Princess
Astrid married in Brussels Lorenz, Arch-Duke
d’Autriche-Este, who became Prince of Belgium in 1995. The Prince was born in Boulogne-Billancourt on 16 December 1955.
The princely couple has five children, all born
in Belgium: Amedeo (21 February 1986), Maria Laura (26 August 1988), Joachim (9 December 1991), Luisa Maria (11 October 1995)
and Laetitia Maria (23 April 2003).

Antwerp since the 1960s has been of vital importance
for the growth of the base chemical industry in Belgium.
Thanks to considerable investments by Belgian and foreign companies in the petrochemical industry and other
major chemical activities, Belgium has developed into a
leading global petrochemical center.
Belgium is also a world leader in pharmaceuticals.
Nearly 30,000 people work in this sector, which alone
accounts for 10% of all Belgian exports. In fact, 40% of
all private sector R&D- expenditures is in the pharmaceutical industry, twice the European average.

ATOMIUM
A seminal totem in the Brussels skyline; neither tower,
nor pyramid, a little bit cubic, a little bit spherical, halfway between sculpture and architecture, a relic of the
past with a determinedly futuristic look, museum and
exhibition centre; the Atomium is, at once, an objet, a
place, a space, a Utopia and the only symbol of its kind
in the world, which eludes any king of classification.
The Atomium was the main pavilion and icon of the world
Fair of Brussels (1958), commonly called Expo 58. At
102 metres high, with its nine interconnected spheres, it
represents an elementary iron crystal enlarged 165 billion (thousand million) times.

The Atomium was not intended to survive beyond the

Half a century later, the Atomium continues, to embody
those ideas of the future and university. And through its
cultural programming, it carries on the debate begun in

BLUE PLANET ACADEMY & CONSULTING INDIA
At Blue Planet Academy & Consulting (BPAC), theory and
application of Rational Use of Energy (RUE) converge to
achieve cost-efficient energy solutions for industry and
individuals. The strong increase in energy demand combined with rapidly depleting fossil fuel reserves demands
a global change in the use and exploitation of energy. The
exponential growth of world population and economic development of the BRIC countries reinforce this need for
sustainability and efficient energy markets.
Blue Planet aims to bring European levels of energy efficiency to the Indian industrial sites. Through decades of
experience with large EU industrial consumers such as
Agfa-Gevaert, Bekaert, Arcelor-Mittal (BE), Panasonic
and many more, we have built up a portfolio of projects that will benefit large industrial sites in India and
all our future clients. By reducing their specific energy
consumption, we have helped reduce operational costs,
strenghten the competitive position of the industries and
their projects and increase profit year after year.
Blue Planet is the result of over 20 years of dedicated
research in energy and sustainability. We offer detailed, modeled energy audits based on measurement
campaigns and simulations combined with applicationoriented training courses, allowing your workforce to
help save and pick low-hanging (energy consumption)
fruits! Meet us now and we’ll discuss all energy/profit
opportunities!

GALLER CHOCOLATIERS
Jean Galler was born into a luxury dessert environment. He liked working in the family confectioner’s shop
founded by his grandfather in 1930 and he has kept this
passion since then.
At 16 years old, inspired by chocolate, he experiments
this living material that fascinates him. To develop his
knowledge and discover new savours, he studied in
Basel (Switzerland), then with Gaston Lenôtre in Paris.
At 21 years old, he launched his own enterprise. 35 years
later, the foundations of the company remain the same:
passion for chocolate, pride in perfection, constant creativity
Today, the team of more than 100 employees design,
produce and market pralines, ice-creams, chocolate
pastries, filled chocolate bars, as well as chocolate tablets, Cat’s tongues (cartoon cats moulded from chocolate), spreads, bite-sized chocolates…
After having built up its reputation in his region, Galler
is now found throughout the Belgian market in more
than 2,000 sales outlets. Galler owns currently a network of stores in Belgium, France, Japan, United Arab
Emirates...
Frequently our company has been honoured with official
recognitions. The most prestigious is undeniably the appointment as « Belgian Royal Warrant Holder », awarded in 1994. In 2002, Galler receives the « Innovation

JBASTIEN - ART
The J. Bastien ART gallery was founded in October 1988
by Jeane Bastien. What initiated this adventure was a
stressed taste for art, which was transformed throughout
the years into a commitment for artists.
All throughout the year, in addition to offering its cymas
to the greatest artists whose reputation is international
such as Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Gaston Chaissac,
Olivier Debré or Henri Michaux, the museum also invites
us to explore new talents by giving young artists such as
Richard Texier, Bai Yiluo, Xiong Wenyun or Zhu Wei a
new opportunity. Anyhow, the adopted artistic line is still
painting and modern and contemporary sculpture.

TECHNOLOGY ECO² DEVELOPMENT
TEED - sustainable development and competitiveness
The current economical environment forces companies
to evolve in a world made of contradictory constraints.
Neglected during decades, pollution is now a priority.
However, ecology is still too often regarded as a barrier to technological innovation and creation of value.
Approached for a long time with disdain, health and
safety of workers are today at the centre of the life of any
company. However, this respect for our earth and its inhabitants is still perceived by some as an abandonment
of competitiveness towards the competition of countries
with low-cost labour.
Françoise VAN DEN

Member of the Board
By running the fuller project, TEED wants to give itself
the means of accompanying sustainable development
in the sector by offering a clean and profit-generative
process that respects their know-how. Together with the
tanners, the key actors of the sector, we can improve
competitiveness, while operating a sustainable way of
producing and improving the working conditions in the

Economy - Employment - Research - Commerce - Trade - Foreign Trade
Brussels, capital of Belgium, is an international city like
no other. As the decision-making heart of Europe, it has
become an international capital, where global opinion
leaders meet to influence and do business, yet it remains small enough to allow its inhabitants to enjoy all
the advantages of a human-size city.
Life sciences: Belgium has a strong tradition in the
life sciences, including biotechnology and pharmaceutical activities, and close cooperation between
universities and industry is a unique strength of the
Brussels-Capital Region.
The Brussels-Capital Region accounts for approximately 20% of Belgium’s GDP. At least 85% of the Region’s
economy consists of service activities.
Aside from being a top business location in general, the
Brussels-Capital Region is home to thriving life sciences and
“information and communication technology” (ICT) sectors.
Belgian Economic Mission 189

(ICT): the ICT sector in Brussels is extremely dynamic, and the software and multimedia sub-sectors
are currently experiencing high growth. Access to
top-level human capital and substantial public support make Brussels a very attractive location for ICT

International organizations: due to its central geographical location and unique status as the capital of
Europe, Brussels is one of the world’s largest centers
for international organizations, NGOs, industry associations, interest groups and diplomatic missions.

ECONOMIC PROFILE OF BELGIUM, THE HEART OF EUROPE
Belgium is a federal Kingdom comprised of three Regions (the
Flemish Region, the Walloon Region and the Brussels-Capital
Region) and three Communities (the Flemish, the French and
the German Communities).
Belgium has an estimated population of 10.6 million inhabitants
(2012) and is one of the most densely populated countries in
Europe. Brussels is the ‘Capital of Europe’: it hosts the headquarters of the European Commission, the Council of Ministers
and the European Parliament. Other major international organizations, such as NATO, are also located in Brussels. That is
how Brussels ranks as the world’s number two city (after Washington, D.C.) in terms of the number of accredited journalists,
and fourth in terms of the number of international meetings and
seminars held.
With a surface of 30,500 km2, Belgium is one of the smallest
member states of the European Union. Nevertheless, it is a significant player in the world economy. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) reached €369.9 billion in 2011 and €376.3 billion in 2012. In
line with the world evolution, Belgium’s growth rate was negative
in 2009 (-2.7%). In 2010, the Belgian economy recovered and a
growth rate of 2.4% was recorded. GDP kept rising in 2011, albeit
at a slightly slower pace than the year before (+1.8%). Due to the
financial and economic crisis, GDP growth was again negative in
2012 (-0.3%) and probably will remain so in 2013 (-0.4%) accord-
ing to estimates of the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Despite the recent downturn, Belgium is a high income country, with an estimated GDP per capita of US$ 45,429 in 2012
(Economist Intelligence Unit).
In 2012, according to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Belgium was the 13th exporter and 13th importer of goods worldwide
with a share of 2.4% and 2.3% respectively.
That same year it was also the 15th exporter and 15th importer of
services worldwide with a share of 2.2% in both cases.
Since 2007, Belgium has been holding the top position of the
annual KOF Index of Globalization, which measures the economic, social and political dimensions of globalization.
Belgium also boasts an exceptional higher education and training system (number 4 in the world in 2012), with excellent math
and science education, top-notch management schools and a
strong propensity for on-the-job training. These elements contribute to an overall high capacity to innovate (11th in the world).
Belgium’s goods market is characterized by high levels of competition and an environment that facilitates new business creation. Business operations are also distinguished by high levels
of sophistication and professional management.
