Evaluations/Wrap Up
Speakers:
Mr. James T. Clemente was born in San Mateo California and grew up in New York.
He attended
Fordham University (majored in chemistry with a minor in philosophy). He then attended Fordham Law School,
where he earned a Juris Doctor.
Mr. Clemente headed the Child Sex Crimes Prosecution Team in Bronx County for the New York City Law
Department. He did undercover work that led to the incarceration of a prolific child sex offender, a teacher and
CYO /camp director who had molested dozens of children including Clemente. As a result of his work,
Clemente was recruited into the FBI.
Mr. Clemente worked for the FBI from 1998 to 2009. He is a former Supervisory Special Agent with the
Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico. He is a nationally recognized expert in the fields of Sex Crimes
Investigation, Sex Offender Behavior, Child Sexual Victimization, and Child Pornography. Clemente has
investigated and consulted on thousands of cases involving the violent and sexual crimes, sexual victimization
of children, and he has interviewed hundreds of victims and offenders. He has also testified as an expert
witness and lectured on these topics across the country and around the world.
Mr. Clemente has been a consultant, providing informal advice, with the show “Criminal Minds” since season
one. He did it because it was an opportunity to teach; he says the collaboration works well, creating an
accurate picture of the BAU for the public and alerting other law enforcement agencies to its services,
particularly in cases in which time is of the essence.
HANDOUT MATERIALS FOR MR. CLEMENTE’S SESSIONS
CAN BE ACCESSED VIA THE SOMERSET COUNTY GOVERNMENT WEBSITE.
THESE WILL NOT BE DISTRIBUTED AT THE SYMPOSIUM.
FEEL FREE TO PRINT THEM.
Ms. Lisa Covitch is an Emotional Support Professional at Altoona Area high School and is a part-time
instructor in Human Development at Penn State Altoona. She performed her undergraduate work in Human
Development at The Pennsylvania State University and holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from
Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Through Ms. Covitch’s last thirty years of experience in working with children and adolescents, she has
encountered several cases of troubled teens who are in need of help and guidance. She worked several years
in Behavioral Health where she worked with depressed/suicidal teens.
In addition to her direct service work, Ms. Covitch published a book titled "The Epidemic of Teen Pregnancy,
An American Tragedy" in June, 2012.
Ms. Katelyn A. Clem is a Child/Teen counselor and Community Education Specialist at the Women’s
Help Center, Inc. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Socio-Cultural
Anthropology. Ms. Clem is trained through the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV) to
provide services to all adult victims and their dependent children. Ms. Clem serves as a member of the
Cambria County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). She primarily works with school-aged children and
teens to break the cycle of domestic violence.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:
A. “Child Sex Offenders Typologies and Case Studies” Through the use of specific cases this workshop
will focus on identifying sex offenders: what motivates offenders, what triggers them to abuse, what tactics are
used by offenders to engage victims, and what tactics do offenders use to avoid detection. Participants will be
provided with provocative insights that may not be part of current practices and strategies used by social
workers, treatments providers, medical professionals, investigators and the courts.
B. “Adolescent Depression and Suicide” Each victim child of sexual or physical abuse presents with unique
behaviors and coping mechanisms that affect their relationships and how they actually function in different
settings. Participants of this workshop will be provided with skills and insight to recognize troubled youth in
time to prevent tragedy, including acting out on themselves or others; and to suggest and discuss treatment
methods.
C. “Multi-Abuse Trauma” Participants will be provided with a better understanding and recognition of multiabuse trauma. Discussion will center on examples of co-occurring issues that negatively impact safety, health
or well-being. These issues may include child sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, substance abuse,
physical disability, mental health issues, chronic or untreated health conditions, poverty, or homelessness.
