Kuwait’s Qadsia crowned AFC Cup champions
Kuwait’s Qadsia were crowned 2014
AFC Cup champions on Saturday
after winning a penalty shoot-out 4-2
against Iraq’s Irbil following a goalless
draw at Maktoum bin Rashed AlMaktoum Stadium in Dubai.
Qadsia have been runners-up twice
over the last four years, and lost out
on the title last year to their local
rivals, Kuwait SC, who won the last
two editions. (KUNA)
Chelsea maintain five-point lead
Aguero inspires Manchester City rout of Spurs, Hull hold Arsenal
LONDON, Oct 18, (AFP):
Chelsea maintained their fivepoint advantage at the head of
the Premier League after
goals from Oscar and Cesc
Fabregas secured a 2-1 victory
at Crystal Palace on Saturday
in a game where both sides
were reduced to ten men.
Oscar’s sixth minute free-kick sent
Chelsea on their way and Fabregas’s
51st-minute goal ensured they had a
cushion to protect them from Palace’s
late rally that was capped by a 90thminute reply from Fraizer Campbell.
Chelsea’s victory was reward for the
way they reacted after the dismissal of
Cesar Azpilicueta and Palace’s Damien
Delaney in the space of three minutes
towards the end of the first half.
Azpilicueta was sent off for an ugly
lunge on Mile Jedinak in the 39th minute
but a second yellow card for Delaney
quickly removed the hosts’ one-man
advantage.
Up to that point, Palace had looked
capable of forcing their way back into
the game but Chelsea — captained by
John Terry for the 500th time —
responded well and showed why they
have maintained an unbeaten start to
their league campaign.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was
fiercely critical of his players following
the defeat at Selhurst Park in March that
contributed to the Blues’ failure to sustain their title challenge.
And he was forced to go into this clash
without in-form striker Diego Costa —
who scored nine goals in the opening
seven league games — after the forward
was injured while playing two games on
international duty with Spain last week.
With Didier Drogba also short of full
fitness, Loic Remy was handed a first
league start since his £10.5 million
($17.4 million, 13.3 million euros) deadline day arrival from Queens Park
Rangers.
But the change appeared to have little
effect on Chelsea, who quickly assumed
control of the game through Oscar’s setpiece.
Delaney was guilty of conceding the
free-kick close to the edge of the penalty
area when he fouled Willian and Oscar
took full advantage with a curling short
over the defensive wall and beyond the
dive of Palace keeper Julian Speroni.
Palace, though, have maintained the
momentum that helped them escape relegation last season and responded positively, with Campbell in particular caus-
ing the visitors problems.
And Palace’s hopes of working their
way back into the game were boosted
when Azpilicueta was dismissed.
The Chelsea left-back lunged at
Jedinak with his studs showing after losing control of the ball, giving the referee
little option but to issue a red card.
Palace had been handed the opportunity to increase the pressure on Chelsea
but they squandered the one-man advantage when Delaney foolishly collected
his second yellow card just three minutes
later.
The home centre-back had been
booked for a clumsy challenge on Remy
in the 30th minute and while his second
infringement was relatively innocuous,
there was little doubt the Republic of
Ireland international again checked the
progress of the Chelsea forward.
Chelsea had been given a reprieve and
moved quickly to put the game beyond
the reach of the home side with a
superbly-worked goal six minutes after
the restart.
A rapid exchange of short, sharp passes between Fabregas, Eden Hazard and
Oscar cut through the Palace defence
and was capped with a precise right foot
finish from Fabregas when the Spain
international found himself one-on-one
with Speroni.
Chelsea then cruised through the second half and when Campbell turned
home from close range from Wilfried
Zaha’s low cross, it came too late to
affect the outcome.
City 4, Spurs 1
In
Manchester
Sergio Aguero scored
four goals in a game of
four penalties as
Manchester
City
recorded a memorable
4-1 win over 10-man
Tottenham Hotspur at
Diame
Eastlands on Saturday.
Aguero’s impressive
haul means the Argentina striker is now
City’s top-scorer in the Premier League
era, with 61 goals in 95 appearances.
He opened the scoring and, after the
outstanding Christian Eriksen pulled
Tottenham level, Aguero added the
hosts’ second with a penalty.
Aguero had another first-half spotkick saved by Hugo Lloris, but Joe Hart
stopped Roberto Soldado’s penalty
before Aguero converted his third
attempt of the day after a foul from
Federico Fazio that earned the
Tottenham defender a red card.
Former Atletico Madrid star Aguero
then added his fourth goal with 15 minutes left to secure a comfortable win as
the reigning champions kept the pressure
on leaders Chelsea.
After the 4-4 draw between Bradford
City and Derby County in 2000, it was
only the second time in Premier League
history that four penalties have been
awarded in one game.
The only downside for City was an
injury that saw veteran midfielder Frank
Lampard carried off in the first half with
a thigh problem.
After the chaos that saw them concede
just 13 seconds into a 6-0 defeat at
Eastlands in November, Tottenham’s
afternoon actually began reasonably well
this time. They had more energy in midfield and might have led when Nacer
Chadli’s run down the left ended with
him crossing for Ryan Mason to drag
wide from the edge of the area.
Mason got an even better opening
when he was picked out by Soldado’s
pass only to be denied to a block from
Hart.
City had threatened when David Silva

Aguero rather than shooting from a good
position.
But they moved ahead after 13 minutes when Erik Lamela lost possession
and Lampard fed Aguero for the striker
to work the ball into space away from
Younes Kaboul and bend a shot into the
bottom corner.
Tottenham responded two minutes
later when Mason stole the ball from
Fernando in midfield and Soldado slid a
pass through for Eriksen to thump a shot
in off the bar.
In the 20th minute, City were given a
penalty when Lamela shoved Lampard
in the area and Aguero converted from
the spot to restore the lead.
The hosts were given a second penalty when Kaboul clipped Silva as the
Spaniard burst on to James Milner’s
pass, but this time Aguero’s effort was
blocked by Lloris and he volleyed over
from the rebound.
Aguero passed up another opportunity
when he latched on to a long clearance
and then teased Kaboul to make room
for a shot that he hit straight at Lloris.
Tottenham continued to look dangerous on the break and the impressive
Eriksen had another powerful effort
pushed away by Hart just before the
interval.
After the break, Chadli collected a
weak clearing header from Martin
Demichelis on his chest and thumped a
shot just past the post.
Just past the hour, Soldado controlled
a bouncing ball and went over under a
Demichelis trip that looked to be outside
the area. Regardless of any controversy
about the incident, the penalty was
pushed away with a fine low stop by
Hart.
Soldado was quickly given the chance
to make up for his error but saw his powerful shot from Chadli’s cross saved by
Hart’s legs.
Referee Jonathan Moss pointed to the
spot for a fourth time when Aguero was
shoved over by Fazio as he prepared to
finish a Navas cross.
Aguero did not pass up the responsibility and found the corner with his spotkick.
He got a fourth when he tore through
on to another long ball and had the room
to curl a low shot into the net in the 75th
minute.
Arsenal 2, Hull 2
In London, Danny Welbeck earned
Arsenal a point in a 2-2 Premier League
draw at home to Hull on Saturday as the
teams met for the first time last season’s
FA Cup final.

before being beaten 3-2 in extra-time
and this game saw them almost take all
three points at the Emirates Stadium.
But the Tigers could not hold out on
this occasion either, with England forward Welbeck netting his eighth goal for
club and country since a £16 million
($26.6 million, 20.2 million euros) move
from Manchester United on transfer
deadline day.
Injuries had hit the home side hard and
there was the added complication of
Lukas Podolski, the Germany forward,
pulling out because of illness.
The Arsenal defence had a makeshift
look about it with Nacho Monreal, normally a left-back, in the centre and
Hector Bellerin, the 19-year-old Spanish
right-back, handed a Premier League
debut.
Hull’s preparations were not straightforward either however, with striker
Nikica Jelavic hurt in the warm-up and
hastily replaced by Abel Hernandez, the
Uruguay forward.
Arsenal started strongly with Jack
Wilshere heading wide from a cross
from Sanchez, who went close himself
after Hull goalkeeper Steve Harper could
only parry a drive from Welbeck.
However,
Arsenal
goalkeeper
Wojciech Szczesny had already made a
save himself, getting behind Michael
Dawson’s back-post header.
Harper was soon back in action and
the 39-year-old, deputising for the
injured Allan McGregor, dived to stop
Santi Cazorla’s shot from finding the top
corner. A goal was coming, though, and
Alexis Sanchez was the man who scored
it in the 13th minute.
The former Barcelona man cut in from
the right and beat Curtis Davies before
unleashing a low drive across Harper
and into the bottom corner.
Hull’s response was to level four minutes later through Mohamed Diame,
who burst through the home back-line
before placing a delicate chip over the
advancing Szczesny.
Arsenal claimed Diame had pulled
back Mathieu Flamini, who had
appeared to win the ball off him, but referee Roger East ignored their protests
and awarded the goal.
