FAMILY PROMISE: THE NEXT STEP
Monday Evening, October 20 at 7:00 p.m.
A mother loses her job, a father is kept from working by an injury, a family is forced
from their home by fire or natural disaster. Healthcare costs soar, public
transportation is underfunded, affordable housing is almost impossible to find. These
are the reasons why families now make up 40 percent of the homeless population, and
why one out of every four homeless people is a child. In response to this crisis, a
national organization called Family Promise seeks to bring the faith community
together to help families regain their housing, their independence, and their dignity.
In September, we had an introductory meeting about how Gables UCC and other
congregations could create a Family Promise affiliate here in Miami to help keep
homeless families intact as they work to get back on their feet. The success rate for
clients of Family Promise is outstanding with nearly 80 percent of clients securing
housing. It is an exciting and hope-filled project that joins with 6,500 congregations
and 160,000 volunteers across the country in working toward a nation in which every
family has a home, a livelihood, and the chance to build a better future together.
Please join us on Monday evening, October 20, at 7:00 p.m. in Havighorst Lounge
to hear more about Family Promise and how Gables UCC and the larger interfaith
community of South Florida can be engaged in this important ministry. With us will
be Claas Ehlers, Director of Affiliate Services with the Family Promise national

CIRCLES OF DIALOGUE
October 25, November 8, 9, & 22
Margaret Mead wrote, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed
citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” For the
fourth year in a row, the Board of Justice and Witness is helping our church
change the world. Circles of Dialogue is designed to promote stimulating
dialogue while also enjoying good socializing. We offer some food and drink with
friends who are willing to learn and dialogue about a pressing justice issue – a
winning combination. This year, the Circles of Dialogue will be about the
immigration and refugee issues that our nation can no longer afford to ignore.

BACK ON TRACK
Tuesday, October 21
7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in Havighorst Lounge
Back on Track is a faith-based, career support organization offering spiritual,
motivational and practical techniques and best practices to individuals in various stages
of career transition. The guest speaker for this Tuesday will be Jose Torres, Managing
Partner of FranNet of South Florida, who will discuss the value of self-employment and
options to traditional employment as well as how to make this transition minimizing risks
and increasing the probability of success. It also covers how to succeed in the "age of
going solo" and covers examples of entrepreneurship for executives and professionals.
All are welcome.
SPECIAL INTERFAITH SERVICES
The MCCJ* Communitywide Service
Pursuing Peace: A Common Path
Sunday, October 26, 4:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary
For the fourth year, the MCCJ Interfaith Clergy Dialogue will celebrate the diversity
of the South Florida faith community through an interfaith service for peace. This is
always a very inspirational program as people from a variety of faith communities
and traditions here in South Florida gather together representing the beauty and
strength of our diverse community while praying for peace together. The service will
be led by clergy from many different houses of worship and will also feature choirs
and music from various religious traditions including our own choir and clergy. The
community is encouraged to attend. A reception will follow.
*Historically known as the Miami Coalition of Christians and Jews,
the nation’s oldest interfaith dialogue, it now includes ALL faith traditions.

We will share together in gratitude for all our many
blessings through the beautiful music, the spoken word, and
prayers of our brothers and sisters of faith in this
community. Please join us for this very special and
beautiful service.

ALL CHURCH RETREAT
Saturday, November 1 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
In our 24/7 culture, finding time to reflect on deeper things, to connect with other
thoughtful and diverse people, and to just be a part of the church community is often
difficult. We are really hoping that you will do just that for a little while on Saturday
morning, November 1, for an All-Church Retreat at the Biltmore Hotel.
All church members, 13 years and above, are invited from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in a
beautiful conference room that the Biltmore Hotel is loaning us for the morning.
There we will share some pastries along with opening devotions, conversation and
reflection as we create together a new church mission statement. Our leader for the
day is the Rev. Dick Sparrow, the former Minister and Leader of Church Life and
Leadership of the United Church of Christ. While the adults and young people are
creating a mission statement, all infants and children through age 12 are invited to be
part of a morning program at the church with activities and fun for all.
Afterwards, we will all gather for a BBQ in the church courtyard. You can then be on
your way around 2:00 p.m. knowing that you had a great morning helping to
articulate the mission of the church, and to enjoy the fun and fellowship of a warm
and inviting church family. The cost is only $10 per adult (children up to 12 are free)
or $25.00 per family. You must register and pay by Sunday, October 19 by either
going to the sign up table in the Fellowship Hall or sign up online at
http://gablesucc.org/all-church-retreat. Space is limited so don’t be left out!
XYZ OUTING TO BONNET HOUSE MUSEUM AND GARDENS
Thursday, December 4; the Church Shuttle leaves at 9:30 a.m.
On Thursday, December 4, join us for an outing at the beautiful Bonnet House
Museum and Gardens in Ft. Lauderdale. Built in 1920 and listed on the National
Register of Historic Places, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is a 35-acre estate and
historic house museum.
Following a guided tour of the Main House, we will take a tram tour of the grounds
which boasts a mangrove swamp and coastal hammock providing habitat for a variety
of fish, birds, and other wildlife. We will enjoy a box lunch on the estate. This is an
easy tour. Walking isn’t difficult. The cost for the outing and lunch is just $20. Sign
