TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
World Mission Sunday
World Mission Sunday, organized by
the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set
aside for Catholics worldwide to
recommit themselves to the Church's
missionary activity through prayer and
sacrifice. In 2014, World Mission
Sunday is celebrated on October 19.
Annually, World Mission Sunday is celebrated on the
next-to-last Sunday in October. As described by Pope John
Paul II, World Mission Sunday is "an important day in the life
of the Church because it teaches how to give: as an offering
made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the
missions of the world"
Pope John Paul II has also spoken of the Propagation
of the Faith's General Fund of support, calling this a "central
fund of solidarity." In a message delivered on a recent World
Mission Sunday, the Pope said: "The offerings that will be
collected [on World Mission Sunday] are destined for a
common fund of solidarity distributed, in the Pope's name, by
the Society for the Propagation of the Faith among the
missions and missionaries of the entire world."
Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the
Missions grow - as new dioceses are formed, as new
seminaries are opened because of the growing number of
young men hearing Christ's call to follow Him as priests, as
areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt, and as
other areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear the
message of Christ and His Church. That is why the
involvement and commitment of Catholics from around the
world is so urgently needed. Offerings from Catholics in the
United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the
year, are combined with offerings to the Propagation of the
Faith worldwide.
Your ongoing support of the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith is vital to the missionaries serving in
1,150 dioceses throughout Asia, Africa, parts of Latin
America and Europe, and on the Islands of the Pacific. Your
generosity makes it possible for local priests, religious, and
catechists to reach out to communities, families and children
in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of
circumstances.
For this year’s World Mission Sunday celebration,
we are focusing on the words from St. Matthew’s Gospel, “I
Will Build My Church” (Matthew 16:18), highlighting the
outreach of local churches through priests, religious and laity
among the poor and marginalized half a world away. The
specific example we have chosen is of Bishop Wenceslao
(Wens) Padilla, the first Bishop of Mongolia, and his fellow
missionary priests from the Congregation of the Immaculate
Heart of Mary and their work among families and children in
need, sharing God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace,
while offering practical help – changing lives every day!
Similar help is provided to mission churches in territories
covering more than half the globe.
Your prayers and generous support offered to the
Society for the Propagation of the Faith on World Mission
Sunday directly benefit the mission church – places like
Mongolia where the young church is growing, filled with
zeal for the faith, but lacking resources for its outreach to
families and those in need. Such support is a concrete way to
“build our Church” – to deepen your relationship with Jesus
by helping Bishop Wens and so many other missionaries
around the world.

FAITH SHARING
Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Discipleship and Politics
INVITATION TO PRAY
Pause for a few moments of silence and enter more deeply into
the presence of God.
Song: “Sing a New Song,” Dan Schutte, OCP
Proclaim the Gospel of Matthew 22:15-21
“Is It Lawful…?”
As you listen to the gospel be attentive to a word, a phrase, a
question, an image, or a feeling that emerges. Reflect on this
quietly or share it aloud. (The other readings for this Sunday
are Isaiah 45:1, 4-6; Psalm 96; and 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5.)
INVITATION TO REFLECT
We know this gospel story so well
that it is easy to dismiss it as a justification
for separating politics from religion. But
that would serve to distort and miss the
important principle Jesus sets before his
followers, both then and now.
Israel was an occupied nation, having been conquered
by Rome. As Matthew’s Gospel proceeds, there is a growing
antagonism between Jesus and the religious and political
authorities of his day. In their effort to entrap him, some
Herodian sympathizers and some disciples of the Pharisees try
to trap Jesus with the highly volatile question of taxes, “Is it
lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” (v. 17). Let us
look carefully at Jesus’ response. He first asks for a denarius,
retorting with another question regarding the image engraved
upon the coin. Just the fact that a coin is produced reveals the
compromising position of these Jews at the time. No strict
Jew would carry a graven image of an emperor, pictured as
divine. But the Jews, dominated by Rome, had to tolerate
several compromising situations to survive. This, the question
of taxes being paid to Rome, disdained by the conquered
people, has resolved itself. Jesus merely highlights the status
quo in both the action of asking for the coin and in his words,
“Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God
what belongs to God” (v.21).
This last phrase, “…and to God what belongs to
God” (v. 21), contains the core message of Jesus’ response to
the trickery of his opponents. God’s image is deeply engraved
upon each human person. God’s sovereignty extends over all
of creation. Thus, we cannot compartmentalize our lives,
separating religion from politics, the spiritual from the
worldly. We are whole persons who act out of our gospel
values in all areas of life: work, politics, family, parish and
neighborhood. To separate these spheres of our life is to
violate our basic nature. Ultimately, at our core, we are whole
persons, created in God’s image (see Genesis 1:26, 27), acting
out of our religious convictions within an ever-widening circle
of influence. All of creation, marked in the image of God and
touched by the finger of God, is sacred.
October 19, 2014
INVITATION TO GROUP SHARING
1. When have I felt touched by the finger of God? Where does
the Holy Spirit ask me to protect life as sacred today?
2. When have I encountered another, remembering that she or
he is created in God’s image? How have I witnessed my
attitudes and actions change?
3. Where have I noticed a lack of respect for life? What can I
do to promote a greater respect for life?
4. What particular injustice to people who are poor or
marginalized in our society do I or we feel passionate
about? What actions can we take to attempt to change
systems of injustice in the area, even in some small way?
INVITATION TO ACT
Determine a specific action (individual or group) that flows
from your sharing.
These should be your primary
consideration. When choosing an individual action determine
what you will do and share it with the group. When choosing a
group action, determine who will take responsibility for
different aspects of the action. The following are secondary
suggestions:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Read the newspapers with an eye to detect the deep-rooted
injustices in our culture. As a group, discuss what you
discover and determine a positive action.
Affirm someone who has shown courage in respecting life.
Honor the sacredness of the created world by living more
lightly on this earth. Together, make a list of ecological
practices you can adopt to reduce waste and avoid the lure
of consumerism.
Give God praise and thanks that you belong to him.
CLOSING INVITATION TO PRAY
Give thanks to God (aloud or silently) for insights, for desires
awakened, for directions clarified, for the gift of one another’s
openness and sensitivity. Conclude with the following:
The earth is yours, O Creator, and all that dwells therein is
sacred. There is nothing that exists without your mark of divine
love. Enlighten our minds, open our hearts, empower us to act
with justice. Help us feed the hungry, rather than hoard; clothe
the impoverished, rather than consume; give out of our wants
and our needs; rather than oppress. We pray that justice will
reign on the earth and the light of your shalom will break
through the darkness. We ask this through Jesus and in the
Holy Spirit. Amen

“Is There Anyone Among You Who is Sick?”
(James 5:14)
If you know of anyone who is sick and/or
homebound and would like the Eucharist
brought to them, please call the parish office
at 681-8330.
ARE YOU A REGISTERED PARISHIONER?
If you are attending and supporting Prince of
Peace Parish on a regular basis, we ask that
you please use the envelopes that are sent to
you each month. This makes it easier for us
to credit your contribution to your account.
If you are not receiving these
envelopes or other mailings, and have not filled out a
registration form within the last two months, then you are not
formally registered in our parish. The fact that you’ve been
"coming for years" is not the same as being registered. In
order to be a registered parish family, you must fill out a
Parish Registration Form. This form can be picked up at
the parish office during regular office hours, Monday-Friday,
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
We wish to thank everyone for their cooperation.
