The initiative culminates in October at GREENBUILD with the Vision 2020
Sustainability Summit —an esteemed gathering of the Hanley Wood Sustainability
Council, editors, sponsor executives, home builders, building owners, architects,
urban planners, developers, and other sustainability leaders. The event encompasses
a knowledge transfer from thought leaders to practitioners surrounding actionable
insights, innovations, and ideas for high-performance building.

GREENBUILD is the world's largest conference and expo dedicated to green building

sustainable building in their everyday work, and will provide the perfect backdrop for
the Vision 2020 Summit. Also new this year, the principles and processes explored

The Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in
Sustainability
The Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainability will once again close
out the Vision 2020 Sustainability Summit.
Hosted by ECOBUILDING REVIEW, BUILDER, ARCHITECT, and The Hanley
Foundation, this esteemed annual award program honors individuals who have
demonstrated extraordinary, lasting, and far reaching contributions to the
advancement of sustainability in the United States.
Noteworthy candidates represent professionals in construction and design, technical
research, product development, educational outreach, and environmental advocacy
who have made deep, long-standing, and influential commitments to sustainability,
and those practitioners have made significant and lasting contributions to the
widespread implementation of environmental building concepts, techniques, and
innovations.
Each year, one recipient is honored and presented with a $50,000 award recognizing
significant achievement in this critical area. The program receives in-depth editorial
coverage in ECOBUILDING REVIEW, BUILDER and ARCHITECT in the fall (print
and online).

2014 Vision 2020 Focus Area Descriptions
Building Design + Performance: One of the most significant developments in design and construction
over the past decade has been the growth in understanding around how buildings work, and the awareness
that a building functions as a system. Also under increased focus is how buildings and their systems
perform throughout their lifespan. This is a distinct departure from the traditional view that a building is
comprised of a collection of individual materials, products, and components assembled during different
phases of a project – without any relationship between them or how their installation will affect a building’s
durability and performance. It is also a change in perspective from a project that ends with construction to
one that regards our buildings as living structures. Building science and performance considerations affect
everything from design and detailing to product development and selection to field installation and
commissioning, making this area the most intense area of research and testing in the industry. This
dynamic area of focus will examine the state-of-the-art of building science research, post-occupancy
performance, and best practices, to identify areas needing further technical verification, pinpoint potential
emerging problems, and project next-generation green-building standards
Green Building Codes, Standards, and Rating Systems: The forces driving change in our industry have
always been a blend of market demand, voluntary adoption, and regulated implementation, but the urgency
around sustainability has placed unprecedented pressures on the pace. And while national and regional
voluntary certifications will continue to be important in developing experience and confidence in the
marketplace, we are already seeing new regulatory activities that will only increase as green building codes
are adopted in more and more jurisdictions across the country. This area of focus will address the
transitional dynamics at work as codes, standards, and voluntary rating systems evolve, the new levels of
performance criteria likely to emerge, and how the projected pattern of adoption will affect manufacturers,
architects, and builders in the coming years.
Economics + Financing: Our industry’s efforts are not solely driven by the goal of improving our personal
and environmental health—also under the microscope is the third-leg of the sustainability stool: economics.
A range of ever-changing sources of funding for green building at national, state, and local levels continue
to promote green investments, but valuation and proving return on sustainable investment remains a
challenge. This area of focus will address the methods and practices surrounding green-building financing,
including efforts assess the value and risk of sustainable building investments and initiatives.
Energy Efficiency + Building Science: Deepening concerns around carbon emissions have inspired new
carbon-based metrics expanding the discussion around energy to include embodied energy and the carbon
footprint of the building products and materials we use, outside of ongoing efforts to reduce the energy
consumption of the buildings themselves. Progressive practitioners have their eyes on what they are calling
carbon-zero buildings as the next level beyond net-zero energy. But the tools and abilities to measure and
report on a carbon metric for most products and projects need further development before this metric can
be universally applied. This area of study will focus on carbon as the next performance metric for the
building industry, its importance in terms of environmental issues, and the path our industry will follow to
achieve carbon-zero performance.

Indoor Environmental Quality: As we improve the way we build out homes, offices, schools and more, an
increased focus is being put on Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ). How do a space’s air quality, lighting,
thermal comfort, and acoustics affect our health, productivity, and overall happiness? As we build to tighter
air leakage standards, we must address concentrated levels of allergens and toxins. We must learn to
harness the environment in the form of daylighting and access to outdoor air and views. We must continue
to explore “green chemistry” and work closely with product manufacturers in developing standards and
protocols such as Health Product Declarations to track the built environment’s effect on human health. How
does this affect our material choices, our energy efficiency strategies, building techniques, and more? This
critical focus area will overlay research and emerging science on the need to address IEQ with an eye on
how this field and associated standards, practices, and regulations must be improved going forward.
Materials + Products: Where building materials originate, the natural resources they consume, the path
they follow to reach their destination as a construction component, and their durability and destiny after a
useful life are at the heart of sustainability and the built environment. The importance of these
characteristics is emphasized by the central role they play in the leading green building rating point
systems, and the many certification programs evaluating them. Whether dealing with limited or renewable
resources, chain-of-custody documentation, amounts and types of recycled content, or recycling potential
these attributes will only become more important as time goes on and resources diminish. This area of
study will examine product development and manufacturing, the impact that sustainable materials and
resources will have on the future of the construction industry, and project trends and innovations in
supplying future demand for construction products.
Sustainable Communities: Many people within the sustainability community point to the traditional
patterns of land use and development patterns for residential housing projects as being “unsustainable” —
even when they include energy efficient homes — due to the energy required for transportation from
housing located further and further from the workplaces, schools, and services families rely on every day.
In fact, a Department of Energy study shows that the energy consumed for transportation from these
communities more than offsets gains made by the energy efficient homes built within them. This area of
study will explore the complex issues surrounding new visions for land use and planning and identify the
hurdles that need to be cleared in order to apply innovative solutions to improve transportation, density, and
affordability issues.
Water Efficiency: Over the next 30 to 40 years population growth and climate change will conspire to
stress water supplies in at least 36 states, causing water authorities across the country to revise their
policies and code requirements related to water supplies, infrastructure, and consumption. While residential
water use does not compare to consumption for agriculture and energy production, it is a high priority with
great potential for both water savings through product development and behavioral education. And as
witnessed by the universal acceptance of WaterSense standards, the future of residential and commercial
plumbing products will continue to be shaped by water resource restrictions and water use regulations. This
focus area will map current water efficiency efforts and forecast the scope and direction of technology and
practices required to reach recommended levels set for future needs.
