M USIC N OTES
Today dur ing communion, St. Dunstan’s Choir will sing the anthem “Lord,
rebuke me not” by M atthew Locke (c.1622 -1677). Locke sets theses verses from
Psalm 6 to dramat ic music. He uses broad phrases, chromaticism, and harmonic
shifts to interpret the long ing character of this psalm.
The choir will also sing the Kyr ie and Agnus Dei “ Stelliferi conditor orbis ”
from the Graduale Romanum. The Graduale Romanum is a volume containing
music for the Roman liturgy, a result of the renewed interest in chant during the
late 19 t h centur y. It was compiled by the monks of Solesmes Abbey in France.

Collect of the Day
Celebrant The Lord be with you.

And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray.
Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity;
and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
First Reading—Exodus 22: 21-27
God said, “You shall not wrong or oppress a resident alien, for you were aliens in
the land of Egypt. You shall not abuse any widow or orphan. If you do abuse
them, when they cry out to me, I will surely heed their cry; my wrath will burn,
and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your
children orphans. If you lend money to my people, to the poor among you, you
shall not deal with them as a creditor; you shall not exact interest from them. If
you take your neighbor's cloak in pawn, you shall restore it before the sun goes
down; for it may be your neighbor's only clothing to use as cover; in what else
shall that person sleep? And if your neighbor cries out to me, I will listen, for I
am compassionate.”

Hap- py are they whose de- light is in the law of the Lord.
Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, nor lingered in
the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful! Their delight is in the law
of the LORD, and they meditate on his law day and night.
All repeat the refrain
They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with
leaves that do not wither; everything they do shall prosper. It is not so with the
wicked; they are like chaff which the wind blows away.
All repeat the refrain
Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes, nor the
sinner in the council of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the
righteous, but the way of the wicked is doomed.
All repeat the refrain
Second Reading—I Thessalonians 2: 1-8
You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in
vain, but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at
Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of
God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or
impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be
entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please
mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As yo u know and as God is our
witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did
we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might
have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a
nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we
are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own
selves, because you have become very dear to us.

Glory to you, Lord Christ.
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered
together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher,
which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love
the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: 'You
shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments han g all the
law and the prophets.” Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus
asked them this question: “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?”
They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that
David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, 'The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my
right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet'? If David thus calls him
Lord, how can he be his son?” No one was able to give him an answer, nor from
that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Prayers of the People—Form IV
Let us pray for the Church and for the world.
Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your
truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world.
Here and after each petition is sung

 Lord, in your mer-cy,
 Hear our prayer.
Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and
peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good.
Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its
resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory.
Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve
Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us.
Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; giv e them courage
and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation.
We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be
fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal
kingdom.
The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.
Confession of Sin
Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word,
and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not
loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in
your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
The Celebrant says
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord
Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
At the end of the Eucharistic prayer all people are welcome to the High Altar. If for any reason
one does not wish to receive Communion or is not baptized, he or she is most welcome to receive a
blessing (indicated by crossing both arms over one’s chest). The ministers will bring the Sacrament
to those who tell an usher that they cannot easily climb the steps.

The people remain standing. The Celebrant continues
We acclaim you holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your
wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into
our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your
creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to
the power of death. In your mercy you came to your help, so that in seeking you we
might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through
the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation.
Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your
only son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he
lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of
salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he
gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and m ade the
whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him
who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who
believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the
sanctification of all.
When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father,
having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper
with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and
gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and
when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This
is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death
and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to you
10
right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you
have give us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.

We praise you,
we bless you,
we give thanks to you,
and we pray to you, Lord our God.
Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend
upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts
for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood
of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become
one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name.
Remember, Lord, your one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, redeemed by the
blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace.
Remember all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those
who seek your truth. Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those
whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light.
And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with
patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor
with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through
your Son Jesus Christ Our Lord.
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours,
Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever.
AMEN.
