Context
The post holder will form part of an established team delivering undergraduate and post-graduate programmes
of study in a range of subjects within Applied Social Studies, leading to academic and professional
qualifications. This particular post holder will provide input in relation to a new course in Sociology approved to
run for the first time in October 2014 and a range of undergraduate courses in the social sciences. They
should have a broad sociological background including within relatively new areas of the Sociology of
Childhood and Sociology of Human Rights. The post holder will be expected to supervise undergraduate
research students. The role will also ultimately involve raising the research initiatives and output of the
Department of Applied Social Studies at the University of Bedfordshire.

Principal Accountabilities
Lecturers are expected to deliver teaching, conduct research and engage with employers regionally. They carry
out a range of duties from those listed below. The specific duties will be specified by the Head of Department
(or his/her nominee) and appropriate support and guidance mechanisms will be identified:
1. Agree and manage own teaching, academic management and administration responsibilities for course
units, with guidance if required.
2. Teach in ways that respond to learner needs, engaging learners in the development of their own knowledge
and skills, in the context of university and departmental strategies and policies.
3. Collaborate and share responsibility and decision-making with colleagues in teaching teams covering
sociology, possibly taking responsibility for a unit in a developing capacity and with the assistance of a
mentor.
4. Take individual responsibility for setting learning objectives, developing teaching resources and materials
which support effective learning in line with university guidelines and course requirements.
5. Produce assessment and other related materials on time and to agreed specifications.
6. Assess the work and progress of students against approved criteria and provide constructive and
developmental feedback.
7. Identify the learning needs of students and respond appropriately through one to one support or directing
students to further support and guidance.
8. Act as a personal tutor to a range of undergraduate students.
9. Use appropriate technologies to deal with routine and complex information and share information and ideas
in accomplishing tasks in teaching, research plus internal and external networking.
10. Join and contribute to appropriate external networks, in an individual, and on some occasions represent, in
a developmental capacity, the department’s and university’s interests.

11. Develop and implement individual objectives agreed with line manager, in the areas of research, the
development and delivery of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), and other areas of external
engagement appropriate to individual knowledge, expertise and experience.
12. Supervise the independent work of students at undergraduate level, and contribute in a developmental
capacity to the support of postgraduate research students as part of a supervisory team with the assistance
of a specified mentor.
13. Share information and ideas including the outputs of agreed activity in the areas of research, teaching and
external engagement, within internal and external networks relevant to each area.
14. Prepare proposals and applications (e.g., for research funding) to external bodies with the guidance and
assistance of experienced colleagues.
15. Engage with other areas of the university community to support their activities.
16. Continually update knowledge and understanding at the forefront of sociology and professional practice
and transfer knowledge of advances in sociology, personal research and professional practice into
teaching and other activities.
17. Collaborate with colleagues on course development, curriculum changes and the development of research
activity.
18. Develop initiative, creativity and judgement in responding to challenges and referring onwards those
requiring specialist or expert management.

externally with employers and the academic community. They will carry out a range of duties from those listed
below. The specific duties will be specified by the Head of Department (or his/her nominee) and appropriate

1. Design, plan, review and develop ideas for activities and materials that support social science student
teaching and learning across a range of units at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
2. Take sole responsibility for the design and delivery of specific units, including taking the lead in
teaching teams.
3. Take responsibility for defined areas and tasks within collaborative teams reviewing and enhancing
provision as necessary.
4. Supervise the work of research students and colleagues working in areas of specific expertise across
the portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate courses
5. Act as a responsible team member within the portfolio, taking the lead in respect of the delivery, and
collaborating on the resource management and development of courses, and being responsible for the
pastoral care and progress-monitoring of students.
