As nights fall to single digit temperatures it is time to start thinking about curling. Our ice technician Joe Hahn is back with us again this season and started to put the ice in on September

Wednesday Night Open League
This year Wednesday Night Curlers are going to see minor changes to the format of the league this season.
A simple win-loss-tie with points awarded, 10-2-5 respectively. The top 2 teams in each division / flight move up
and the bottom 2 teams move down. Standard club rules with respect to timing will be used. Tie breakers will be
broken as follows: Head to head competition will be used first followed by a draw to the button.
Playoffs will change to a double knock-out format, similar to what we see in the Hamilton and District Bonspiel. It
will also allow all teams the possibility to win the Club Championship. If we had 20 teams then team 1 would play
team 20, team 2 would play team 19, etc. We would then sort / delegate teams into flight D, C and B as the teams
progress thru the playoffs - 4 games would be maximum. Timer should also be used, however, subject to further review.
We will bump the fee structure to $60/team this year (an increase of $2.50 per person or $10 per team. The skips are
to pay / collect the money and pay either Dan Whitley, the Club Manager or deposit in the black mail box by the
office, with the name of the team on the envelope. Danny will co-ordinate with the Club Manger who has paid and
who has not. Danny will do any follow-up or chasing.
Also, if you wish to play in this league and do not have a team you will be able to sign up as an individual and the
co-ordinators will be placing you on a team.

Canada Curling Association Approved Notions

The two-year trial for the Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials was extended for another year, with a decision expected in
the next 12 months on whether the discipline will be included as a medal sport for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The qualifying rounds at the Canadian Seniors and Mixed Championships were eliminated and replaced by a similar 14team direct-entry format that is currently used at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Championships, with the 14 teams split into two seven-team pools, and the top-four finishers from each pool advancing to the
championship round-robin. As well, games at both the Seniors and Mixed nationals will be reduced to eight ends, falling in
line with international competitions.

Effective as of the 2015-16 curling season, the age-eligible date for juniors to play at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors was shifted six months back to fall in line with the World Curling Federation rules. Previously, Canadian juniors had
to be 20 and under as of Dec. 31 of the year prior to a Canadian championship; now they have to be 20 and under as of
June 30 of the previous year. Prior to this change, non-Canadian players at the World Junior Championships could be up
to six months older than the eldest Canadian player.

Among various minor tweaks to the Canadian rulebook that will govern the sport here from 2014 through 2018 was a
change in the timing system. Thinking time for 10-end games will be reduced to 38 minutes from 40 minutes, and to four
minutes and 30 seconds in the extra end from five minutes. This change is also expected to be made by the World Curling Federation later this month.

A proposal to investigate potential resources to help teams participating in the qualifying round at the Tim Hortons Brier
and Scotties Tournament of Hearts was approved, with report to be presented to the membership at the 2015 National
Curling Congress.

Corporate League
Build a Recreational Curling Team within your Company or Group and curl after work in a
league with other business teams. Encourage sportsmanship, exercise and team building along with participating in
one of Canada’s favourite Olympic Sports.
The Grimsby Curling Club is launching a Business/Corporate Curling League at our Kerman Avenue facility. Date
Deadline to set up League October 29th, 2014
START: First week in November until the end of March 2015
WHEN: Monday 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Space for 8 Teams
Friday 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Space for 8 Teams
Six End Games: Approx. 20 weeks of curling.
COST: $400.00 plus HST per Team
NEED: 4 or 5 individuals per team from the same company or organization interested in curling; (i.e. having a fifth
player allows for a spare replacement—same price). Players must bring clean soft soled shoes and warm, athletic
type clothing that allows flexibility.
The Curling Club will provide curling instruction and a draw schedule to get the group started, thereafter this
league may wish to run their own draws otherwise the Club will assist. Equipment such as club brooms, grippers
and sliders will be available for game use. The Club has a Pro Shop that offers a range of curling shoes and equipment for purchase and Club Lounge privileges are available after games.
Choice of day will be given on first come basis— total of 16 teams required. The Club reserves the right to cancel
the league if team numbers not reached. (**NOTE: There may be a bit of wiggle room to push back the start time
15 minutes for this league)
