To Help Form Health Habits

collecting new pajamas for children in need. Pajamas with tags on them can be

SPFHS SCN Plans Seventh
Annual Pajama Drive
SCOTCH PLAINS – The Students
Concerned for the Needy (SCN) Service Group from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School (SPFHS) are once
again collecting New Pajamas on behalf of “The Pajama Program”, a
501(c)(3) charity that provides warm
pajamas to children in need. Collected
pajamas will be distributed to receiving organizations that care for homeless and vulnerable children within
Union County.
Community members and groups
may donate new pajamas for a child,
boy or girl, ages infant through age 17.
Please keep all tags on PJ’s. SCN’s PJ
Drive will run through October 30,
2014. Coldwell Banker Agents from
the Westfield East Office will also
collect PJ’s to help SCN increase their
PJ totals by simultaneously running a
drive in their office located at 209
Central Avenue, Westfield.
The donation of a pair of new pajamas will help to create a warm and
nurturing bedtime environment for
youngsters living under difficult circumstances. While the PJ Drive is in
progress, PJ’s may be brought to the
Athletic Office at SPFHS located in
the front of the building at 667
Westfield Road, Scotch Plains from 8
a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

Education will present Practical Resources for Life – A Life Line for the
Special Needs Family by Adrienne
Robertiello, on Wednesday, November 19 from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
This free parent resource seminar is
open to the special needs community
and offers an opportunity for families
to learn about the various resources
that are important to those living with
children with various disabilities.
Ms. Robertiello is the community
Autism Educator at Children’s Specialized Hospital. She has developed
and implemented several community
education initiatives including the
Community Hub, Real Life Tips for
Kids with Autism, and Autism and
Safety – It’s Unpredictable. As part of
these and other disability programs,
she educates and presents to families,
schools, and community service providers. Ms. Robertiello is also a parent of a child with autism spectrum
disorder and other disabilities.
The evening includes a special needs
vendor fair, a question and answer
session and light refreshments. Practical Resources for Life will be held at
Newmark Education, 1000 Cellar
Avenue, Scotch Plains. The event is
free and open to adults only. Please

WF Hadassah to Host
Musical Tribute Luncheon
CLARK – Les Paul and his wife,
Mary Ford, recorded a string of pop
hits in the early 1950s. A renowned
jazz guitarist, Paul was also a pioneer
in multi-track recording, solid-body
guitar design, and electronic effects
devices.
Tom Doyle is a highly accomplished guitarist in his own right. He
began his musical career in a duo
with his sister and they performed at
the Bitter End in New York City and
opened for such artists as Richie Havens, the Lovin’ Spoonful and the
Butterfield Blues Band.
Les Paul, impressed by Doyle’s
musical talent and technical knowhow, hired him as his sound engineer,
a position that Doyle held for 40
years.
In 1970 Doyle also began a business making, repairing and modifying guitars. He has customized, repaired and modified guitars for George
Benson, Sting, Bucky Pizzarelli, Al
Di Meola, and Jimmy Page, among
others. Along the way, Doyle met
Sandy Cory, a guitar student and singer,
and Doyle and Cory began to perform
together. Like Paul and Ford, they are
a husband and wife team.
The duo will pay perform at Temple
Beth O'r/Beth Torah, 111 Valley Road,
Clark, on Sunday, October 26 from
12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., a kosher Chinese lunch will be served. Tickets
cost $50 for a single, $100 a couple,
and $150 patron with proceeds benefiting Hadassah. For tickets, call

WESTFIELD – The Westfield Area
Y along with UnitedHealthcare is
kicking off the Seventh Grade Initiative on Tuesday, October 28th from 7
p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Gym at the
Main Y Facility at 220 Clark Street in
Westfield.
Seventh grade students in Cranford, Garwood, Mountainside and
Westfield along with their families
are invited to attend the kickoff. The
evening will include fitness testing, a
climbing wall, advice from personal
trainers and a nutritionist as well as
other activities for seventh graders
and their families. Healthy refreshments will also be served.
This program is intended to
heighten awareness and combat the
epidemic of youth obesity that our
community/nation is currently facing. Research indicates that seventh
grade is a key year in a child’s development of attitudes and behaviors
regarding body image, nutrition and
self esteem. The goal of the Seventh
Grade Initiative is to help kids pass
through this critical time of development with a healthy self-image and a
thorough understanding of the importance of exercise and nutrition
throughout the teen years and into
adulthood. More than 330 students
from eight schools participated this
past school year.
All participants who do not currently have an active Y membership
will receive a complimentary
Westfield Area Y limited pre-teen
program plus membership for the
school year in addition to physical,
nutritional and educational opportunities throughout the 2014-2015
school year.
The program also includes use of
exercise equipment, open swim, gym
time, a free orientation to use exercise equipment; pre and post-fitness
testing; access to Friday night teen
nights, family fitness lectures and
events; free classes and programs including youth Conditioning, ZUMBA
for teens, fencing and cross country
Parents can register their children for
the Seventh Grade Initiative at the
kickoff. The initiative also offers
students the opportunity to participate in the Annual UnitedHealthcare
Health Bee, a quiz-show style competition that test students’ knowledge
about health and fitness topics.

Cellist Daniel Mumm
Joins NJWA Music Studio
WESTFIELD – Ted Schlosberg,
New Jersey Workshop for the Arts
Founder and Executive Director, is
pleased to announce that cellist
Daniel Mumm has joined the staff of
the Music Studio.
Mumm, who holds a Bachelor of
Music degree from Indiana University, and both an Artist’s Diploma
and Master of Music degree from
Montclair State University, is a candidate for his Doctor of Musical
Arts degree from Rutgers University. His teaching experience involves cello instruction or coaching
at area universities such as Rutgers,
Seton Hall, William Patterson and
Montclair State, in addition to the
New Jersey Region 1 Orchestra,
Youth Orchestras of Essex County,
NJASTA Chamber Music Academy
and Blair Academy.
His orchestral experience includes
performances with the Charlotte
Symphony in C, New Brunswick
Symphony Orchestra, Garden State
Philharmonic, Rutgers University
Symphony Orchestra, as well as the
Manchester Chamber Orchestra in
Vermont, Colonial Symphony and
Youth Orchestra of the Americas. In
March of 2010, he was also a cello
soloist for the Orchester der
Keunstuniversitaet Graz in Austria.
“Daniel is an outstanding teacher
who also performs professionally.
He is unique in being able to diagnose his students’ playing issues and
immediately communicates solutions which are effective,” said Dr.
Schlosberg. The Director continued, “He has gained tremendous
popularity among his students of all
ages. Although Daniel only recently
joined our staff in September, those
students who have him as an instructor have had high praise for him. We
feel confident that future students
who enroll in his classes will feel the
same.”

Les Malamut Gallery to
Host Photography Exhibit
UNION – The Les Malamut Art
Gallery will exhibit “Life Through
My Lens” a collection of photographs by Peter Alessandria from
Wednesday, November 5 through
Monday, December 29.
Mr. Alessandria came to photography by a unique and interesting path.
An entertainment attorney in Los
Angeles for nearly twenty years, he
lost his business as a result of the
2008 financial crisis. He made the
decision to amplify his love of photography and turn it into a profession.
He first picked up a camera in 2004
and was suddenly captivated. In the
next two years, he amassed over
200,000 shots.
“If it took a global financial meltdown and mid-life crisis to get here,
I’m all for it,” Mr. Alessandria stated.
Mr. Alessandria has gone on to
exhibiting his stunning photographs
in multiple venues including both
solo and group shows and winning
awards for his work, most notably
First Place Award of Excellence, MSHAC and Alfa Art Gallery. His

Related Training Programs
CRANFORD – Union County College is a member of the Northern
New Jersey Health Professions Consortium which works to strengthen
and expand health care industry occupational training, leading to certifications and employment. The programming offered through the consortium is possible through the Health
Professions Opportunity Grant.
The Health Professions Opportunity Grant is a project funded by the
Administration for Children and Families and the US Department of Health
and Human Services (HHS), Grant
Number 90FX0001. This grant provides training opportunities to help
people improve their skills and find
better jobs. Eligible applicants are
chosen through a random lottery. Twothirds of eligible applicants will be
selected and will receive funding and
support through the grant. If chosen,
students could have the following edu-
cation-related expenses paid for, such
as: tuition, required textbooks, required
medical supplies, required uniform,
certification/licensure exams, and job
search assistance.
The program offered through the
grant can cover the following healthrelated non-credit programs: Electrocardiogram (EKG) Technician,
Pharmacy Technician, and Phlebotomy Technician. The credit-based
program that is covered by the grant
is the Emergency Medical Technician.

MS Teen Performs at
CBGB Festival in NYC
MOUNTAINSIDE - Mountainside
resident Teddy Cole, a 16 year-old
music student at the School of Rock
afterschool music program in
Chatham, performed at the CBGB
Festival in Times Square on October
12. Cole played with the School of
Rock AllStars, which is comprised of
some of the top young musicians
from across the tri-state area.
“Being a part of the CBGB Festival
was extremely exciting,” said Teddy,
who shared the stage with Devo,
Jane’s Addiction, We Are Scientists,
Robert DeLong, and Surfer Blood.
“The crowd was huge, and their energy was better and stronger than
anything I’ve ever experienced.”
The School of Rock AllStars is a
select group of young musicians ranging in age from 12 to 17. School of
Rock students who wish to join the
AllStars take part in a coast-to-coast
audition process before a national
panel of judges. The top 1.5 percent
of School of Rock musicians from
across the United States are ultimately
invited to join the AllStars, and they
perform at major festivals, concerts,
and events throughout the year.
The one-hour set that Teddy and
his AllStar bandmates played at the
CBGB Festival included Patti Smith’s
“Because the Night”, Led Zeppelin’s
“Whole Lotta Love”, Queens of the
Stone Age’s “No One Knows”, and
the Jackson Sister’s “I Believe In
Miracles”.
When he’s not rocking the stage in
front of tens of thousands of punkloving music fans in Times Square,
Teddy is a junior at Governor
Livingston High School in Berkeley
Heights.

BULB PLANTING...Lincoln School in Westfield recently celebrated some Fall
events that were hosted by the Lincoln School Parent Teacher Organization. A
Fall bulb planting day was held on October 7. The children enjoyed learning
about how to plant bulbs that will “sleep” through the winter and bloom in the
Spring. They worked intently with their shovels while having fun. Pictured
