LOVE OF GOD AND LOVE OF NEIGHBOR
THE FIRST AND SECOND GREAT COMMANDMENTS!
No Church practice or rule should ever be a burden, and in
our Catholic Church, none is. The practices and rules are
there to help us keep those two "biggies" (love of God and
neighbor), and also to teach us how to avoid everything
that is opposed to the "love command" - in other words, to
avoid sin. We cannot love God and not love our neighbor,
but there is more to it than that. The love of God has
priority and is the source of love for neighbor. In our
neighbor, we see something of God, his creature, his image
and likeness, and if we love God, we must also love his
image, the work of his hands.
How do I love the invisible and transcendent God?
The most direct way is to consider what we have
received from him-every thing-giving him praise and
thanks and using these gifts for the greater glory of
God and the needs of our neighbor. Within your family
circle, see if you can figure out how the command to "love
God" is all about faith, hope, and charity. Pick out a
neighbor, someone you don't know very well who lives
nearby, and discuss how to surprise them with an act of
kindness (without their ever finding out who did it) such as
raking, shoveling, or baking. Cultivate the "love habit" by
sharing with each other several ways we could "love our
neighbor" at the office, school, or neighborhood, and
within our own family. Pray a family rosary for the
spiritual well-being of a special neighbor who has been
kind to you.
Love is not just an emotion. It moves us to care for those
who are in most need. It calls us to consider the needs of
people and not simply our personal economic security. It
calls us to be in solidarity with those in need and to see
things from the perspective of the other. It calls us to learn
from one another and to be transformed.
Love leads to action. We are called to put love into
action. We are reminded of Catholic social teaching's
demand for a preferential love for the poor. How can we,
as individuals and as a society, show them a love that is
made concrete? What are the structures in our society and
government that will promote such justice? How can we
join with one another in expressing our love and living
service to God?
In the Gospel today, Jesus affirms that both love of God
and love of neighbor are essential to life. As Christ sees
it, friendship with God is basic to our love of neighbor.
Hence, taking a moderate time apart to cultivate our
friendship with God is not taking quality time away from
our spouses or our children or our neighbors. Rather, it
ensures that the time we spend with them is quality time.
Prayer changes the quality of our love, salting our love
with divine fire.
Jesus lived the twofold command to the highest possible
intensity. As he renews his sacrifice and comes to us in
Communion, he can renew our hearts and stir up a fire of
love within us. We can become more like him, and he can
use our hands, feet, and mouths to continue his ministry
on earth.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF CHILDREN WHO WILL BE MAKING THEIR FIRST COMMUNION IN 2015: The
Reconciliation Sacramental Catechesis will be taking place on Tuesday, October 28th at 7 PM in the Church. This event is
for both parents (at least one must be present) and students and attendance will be taken, so please look for sign-in sheets in
the Gathering Space when you arrive. Due to the mandatory nature of student attendance, only the Communion classes will
be cancelled on Tuesday, October 28th and Wednesday October 29th. The catechesis will end by 8:15 PM. Families are
reminded to please park next door at McCarthy High School. We are expecting 200 families at this meeting and the high
school parking lot is the bigger, better bet to get all of you in and out safely.
CHILDREN'S CATECHUMENATE PROGRAM
All families who have unbaptized children (A/K/A Catechumen) in our program are reminded that last
Sunday was the beginning of the Sunday Catechesis for your child. All families will attend the 9:30AM
Mass and sit together in the designated pews. At the homily, the children will be blessed and sent with
their catechist team to room 114 (located in the downstairs hall of the North school building) for
catechesis. Parents and other family members will join them after Mass for the closing prayer.
Whether your child is preparing to receive sacraments at Easter Vigil 2015 or Easter Vigil 2016, participation in the Sunday
Catechesis is required. If your child is a catechumen and you do not have the materials from the Orientation held on October
7th, please contact the office of Religious Education as soon as possible.

All Saints Parade - Our students in Kindergarten, First and Second grade will wear their Saints costumes to
school on Thursday, October 30th for All Saints Day. The students will parade around the Piazza before
entering church for the 9:00 AM Mass. We invite the parishioners of Saint Mark to join our Saints in

The prophet Isaiah warned Israel (5 :20 & 21) "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,
who change darkness into light and light into darkness ... ! Woe to those who are wise in their own
sight, and prudent in their own esteem!" It is a warning that all Americans should ponder seriously
before voting.
In this, as in earlier elections, our nation and our families are divided over moral and constitutional
issues for which there can be no compromise. Every follower of Christ needs to be in prayer.
Election Prayer For Our Nation
God, our Father, Giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to Your loving care. You are the Rock on
which this nation was founded. You alone are the true Source of our cherished rights to life, liberty and the pursuit
of happiness. Reclaim this land for Your glory and dwell among Your people.
Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation's voters. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and
the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind Your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking
and doing Your Will.
Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, patroness of our land, grant us the wisdom and courage to reject the
culture of death. Lead us into a new millennium of Life. We ask this through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
As our Diaper Drive comes to an end, THANK YOU! to all who gave so very generously!!! Our once empty
shelves are filled again and ready to care for about 100 moms and their children each week. It is your love for Him
that is reaching out to Jesus "in the distressing disguise of the poor"! May He reward and bless each of your hearts
and homes as only He can do!

EVER WONDER ABOUT SINGING IN THE
CHOIR? Music is the heart of worship in many
Catholic churches, including St. Mark. Music at St.
Mark is planned to complement the Liturgy of the
Word, our pastoral homilies and our Eucharistic unity
as a parish. If you have ever wanted to or wondered
what it would be like to sing in our choirs, come give
us a try. Middle and high school students are welcome
to sing with the 9:30 Mass choir. For many of you
who love to sing at Mass, singing in the choir is only
a matter of changing where you sit. For 9:30 and
11:00 masses on Sundays, please contact Mary Lou
Corbiere by email [email protected]. For 12:30
Spanish choir Mass on Sundays, please contact Bill
Clifford by email [email protected].

BLESSED SACRAMENT
Exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament in the Chapel
Monday 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM
Tuesday to Friday 8:30 AM to Noon
My dear Adorers,
During the week of October 13
(7) brothers and sisters of Jesus enrolled as Adorers of
the Blessed Sacrament. This brings our enrollment
total to 4630 Adorers. During this week our Lord was
visited by 616 Adorers in the chapel for a total of 286
hours. Will you be the next new Adorer of the
Blessed Sacrament?
Every time you come before Jesus in the Blessed
Sacrament, you are given the opportunity to note your
prayer intentions that go directly to Him. I can tell
you from personal experience and from others that
these prayer intentions are being answered. We all
need help and Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the
Divine Power that gives us the graces to answer our
prayers. I invite all, who have received the Sacrament
of the Eucharist, to become an Adorer of Christ by
enrolling as a member of Adorers of the Blessed
Sacrament.

Hello from The CatholicTV Network
As we prepare to celebrate our 60th anniversary, it is also our great hope to bring The CatholicTV Network to
your area. CatholicTV is an upbeat, youthful and exciting Catholic channel and online resource for the New
Evangelization. Please visit us at www.CatholicTV.com. Would you help us introduce CatholicTV to the great
people you serve and ask them to petition their cable or satellite provider to add CatholicTV as a new channel?
Within our website, there is an easy to use tool at the address: GetCatholicTV.com. When an individual enters
their Zip Code, they can quickly and confidentially send a message directly to their provider requesting
CatholicTV be added as a channel in their area.
