MEDIA ALERT
WORKING TOGETHER TO IMPROVE SCHOOL ARTS
The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal, led by Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni, MPL, and the
Department of Arts and Culture led by Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha, MPL, are going to launch
the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Dokkies on Friday 24 October 2014. The main
objective of the collaborative agreement between the Department of Education and the Department
of Arts and Culture is to establish a basis for co-operative work between the two departments.
The partnership will promote access to creative and cultural learning and experience by all learners
and the community of KZN at large. The planned projects will include library services, culture
development, language services, arts development and archives. Activities within the agreement will
include establishing best practices for arts and culture programmes and promote capacity building of
educators and learners, joint projects between schools, community and arts infrastructure
programmes that have both curriculum and school enrichment dimensions, planning and
implementation of school arts and culture festivals as well as securing a fund base that support
planning and implementation of all the programmes.
As part of this agreement both departments are going to work hard to provide relevant library
material, infrastructure and resources in public libraries situated to schools, promote multi-cultural
displays for all cultures in schools, promote and establish reading and writing clubs in schools,
establish arts and culture academy, promote the creation of family tree by learners and many other
school activities that enhance arts and culture in schools.
“As the two departments, we want to mobilise all our energies and resources to promote and
improve schools’ arts and culture in the same manner we are working together to improve school
sports,” said the MEC, Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni, MPL. Both MECs are going to be present during
the launch which will take place as follows:
