CHOOSING MAGNIFIERS
HOW TO CHOOSE A
MAGNIFIER
Many factors are required in
determining the proper magnifier:
• Which one will most suit your
requirements?
• Which one is the easiest for you to
see with?
• Which one is the easiest for you to
use?
• What task are you attempting to
accomplish with the magnifier?
It is not uncommon to need several different power/types of
magnifiers. The proper magnifiers can help to maintain independence
and see better.
“Bigger is Better.” Does not apply when it comes to
magnification!
WHY? The largest magnifier is not the most powerful. The power
(amount of magnification) of a lens governs its size. The
stronger the magnification the smaller the lens size becomes.
It is impossible to make a high powered magnifier which
covers a large area. (Though electronic devices can accomplish
this.)
WHY? The power of a lens is determined by the curvature of the
lens. The curved surface bends the light rays to produce an
image that appears larger. The more curved a lens is, the
smaller it becomes. Physically the lens becomes thicker and
heavier as the curve (magnification) increases.

CHOOSING MAGNIFIERS
A stronger power magnifier (steeper curve) requires you to
position the magnifier closer to the object and closer to your
eye!
WHY? The stronger the power the more enlarged the viewed
object becomes but the field of view is decreased (you can only
see a few letters at a time). Therefore requiring you to move the
magnifier or object more.
The cost of magnifiers will vary.
WHY? The type of magnifier, the material the lens is made of,
the quality of the lens, and the manufacturer will contribute to
the cost. Typically illuminated magnifiers will cost more than
non-illuminated magnifiers. German made magnifiers, which
offer superior quality optics, will cost more. Many of the better
optical quality magnifiers will come with a warranty.
You cannot harm your eyes by using a magnifier.
Determining the proper magnifier requires patience, hands on
practice and proper usage instructions.

IMPORTANCE OF LIGHTING
Proper lighting is the number one "device" prescribed for the visually
impaired person. Though light is essential to seeing, it’s the amount and
type of light that matters. Depending on age, eye conditions and
environment one must choose the proper lighting to see better.
What are the most common types of light?
Fluorescent Lighting: Disperses a blue-white light evenly over a
larger area than any other type of light. It produces a lot of light without
using much electricity and is used in public/large places because it is
cheaper and covers a wider area. Typically this is the worse type of
lighting for the visually impaired because they have a flicker to the bulb
which is more noticeable to a vision impaired person.
Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL): The newest bulb on the shelves.
It's the squiggly one! CFL's are designed to radiate a steadier light, that
is no flickering. They can take several minutes to become their fullest
brightness. However, many people with low vision still complain about
seeing a flickering light. Another problem is that due to their design;
they contain mercury which requires a special disposal method.
Full Spectrum/Daylight Lighting: Disperses light closest to natural
sunlight and the most comfortable on any eye. There is little heat from
the bulb and the power on the bulb is usually a much lower wattage.
Full spectrum is the best lighting for reading and up close work for the
vision impaired person.
The only way to truly know what type of bulb will work the best is to try
each type of light. Using a goose neck type lamp, try each type of bulb
to “see” what works best for your eyes. If your eyes burn, feel strained
or feel dry, try changing the types of light source you are using.
