Ten Ways To Use LinkedIn -- Writing on his own BLOG, Garage
Technology Ventures founder Guy Kawasaki offers ten ways to use
the social networking site LinkedIn. While likely not a service used
heavily by your listeners, LinkedIn is a site that can definitely benefit
radio sellers and, frankly, job seekers. “People with more than twenty
connections are thirty-four times more likely to be approached with a
job opportunity than those with less than five,” says Kawasaki. “Most
people use LinkedIn to ‘get to someone’ in order to make a sale,
form a partnership, or get a job. It works well for this because it is
an online network of more than 12 million experienced professionals
from around the world representing some 130 industries.” A couple
of suggestions from Kawasaki for using LinkedIn include, Increase
Your Visibility: By adding connections you increase the likelihood
that people will see your profile first when they’re searching for
someone to hire or do business with. Improve Your Google
PageRank: LinkedIn allows you to make your profile info available
for search engines to index. Since LinkedIn profiles receive a fairly
high PageRank in Google, this is a good way to influence what
people see when they search for you.
Some Facts About Twitter -- On the website ConvinceAndConvert.
com, poster Jay Baer dissects a recent study by Edison Research
to come up with his Seven Surprising Statistics About Twitter.
Twitter Is Ubiquitous: 87% of respondents to the Edison study had
heard of Twitter, compared to 88% who have heard of Facebook.
Twitter “Sucks” At Converting Awareness To Usage: While
87% are aware of Twitter, just 7% say they use it. Compare that
to Facebook where 88% are aware of the social networking site
and 41% have a profile -- a nearly 50% conversion rate. Twitter Is
Disproportionately Popular With African Americans: A reported
25% of Twitter users are African-Americans -- that’s about double
the Black population of the U.S. Edison’s Tom Webster theorizes
that could be due to Twitter’s similarity to text messaging, as several
studies have shown that African Americans use the mobile web at
rates that are roughly double that of non-Hispanic whites.
The Facebook Privacy Debate -- In a post at PCWorld.com
Infoworld reporter Paul Venezia slices and dices the current
debate over Facebook privacy issues in an article entitled, How To
Stop Worrying About Facebook Privacy and Love Facebook. “If

Facebook’s recent privacy issues are any indication, a world of people
out there don’t understand how this Internet thing works beyond the
dimensions of their monitor,” says Venezia. “Sure, they get the fact
that viruses and malware are bad, and identity theft is happening
all over the place. But they don’t comprehend how deeply their
Internet usage is tracked and the level of detail they make available
on a constant basis -- not a clue. And somehow, most of them don’t
care.” Noting the massive data that Facebook collects on its users,
Venezia says all that info is virtual “manna from heaven” when it
comes to advertisers. “To be able to say that the current viewer of a
page is a 25-year-old blonde woman who lives with male and female
roommates in San Jose, has free time in the evenings, and likes reggae
music -- it’s superb info for ad targeting.”
Internet Users Hold Privacy Dear -- Reporting on a recent project
by PR consulting firm Edelman, the website eMarketer.com says
that when it comes to making sacrifices to get their entertainment
without paying, giving up personal privacy ranks at the bottom of
the list for the vast majority of consumers. While nearly half of
respondents said they were willing to watch ads in exchange for free
entertainment, just 13% said they would be willing to exchange their
personal information for content. “With the biggest social networking
sites free to the general member, this makes them a prime example
of users trading off something of value for free entertainment. But
a huge part of the trade-off in the social networking environment
includes personal information -- the privacy of which is sometimes
dubious. As sites like Facebook continue to work through privacy
issues, marketers should keep in mind that, while users make certain
information about themselves available, most people still want their
privacy respected.
Mobile Marketing Opportunities -- A recent feature appearing in
a weekly newsletter from Chicago-based marketing communication
products and services firm Tukaiz talks about The Brewing Battle
Over The Future Of The Mobile Web. Tukaiz says that the growing
popularity of SmartPhones being used to access the web over wireless
broadband networks should prompt marketers to think about the
future implications of that fact when it comes to mobile marketing.
“A recently-released statistic about mobile device usage notes that
cell phones in the U.S. are now used for data (text messaging, mobile
Web access, etc.) more than for phone calls. Approximately 90%
of U.S. households now have cell phones, and mobile devices are
becoming increasingly powerful. Mobile technology discussions that
shape the way consumers access and interact with information, as
well as how organizations are able to disseminate that information,
become extremely important as usage becomes more multifunctional
and ultimately ubiquitous.”
