Medal for MU's Prof Nursing student rape case
IMPHAL, Nov 3: Prof SK
Srivastava of Chemistry Dept,
Manipur University has been
chosen for the CRSI Bronze
medal by Chemical Research
Society of India (CRSI), IISc
Bangalore in recognition of his
contribution to research in
Chemistry.
The medal will be presented to Prof Srivastava in
February 2015 at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory,
Pune where he would also
deliver the medal lecture. Prof
Srivastava is actively pursuing frontline research in
nanoscience
and
nanotechnology.
National Lok Adalat
IMPHAL , Nov 3: The District
Legal Services Authority,
Chandel will organise a National Lok Adalat at the office
premise of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandel on November
6. Further the District Legal
Authority, Chandel is going to
organise the observance of Legal Services Day on November
9 at the Indoor Stadium of
Japhou Bazar accompanied by
a legal awareness programme,

Lup today submitted a
memorandum to Deputy Chief
Minister
Gaikhangam
demanding the arrest of an
accused in the reported rape
case of a nursing student and to
hand over the case to the CID
(Crime Branch) of Manipur
Police Department in order to
ensure speedy and proper
investigation of the case.
The memorandum submitted to the Deputy CM
mentioned that on October 26
the victim girl, a nursing student, was allegedly abducted
and raped by the accused
Phurailatpam Nanao Sharma.
She was also kept captive for
three days.
The victim girl was rescued from captivity on
October 29 at around 2 pm
from
Rengpan
village,
Salungpham Mamang Leikai
by two tribal women. The
victim girl is undergoing constant medical treatment since
then.
The memorandum also
mentioned that the mother of
the rapist is the younger sister of the circle MLA. As
such, there is tremendous influence by them during the
investigation of the case conducted by Bishnupur women
PS and . The police utterly
failed to arrest the accused
rapist without providing any
convincing reasons.
The memo further mentioned that the officer
handling the case has not visited the crime scene till today
and at the same time the key
eye witnesses of the incident
have not been yet examined
by the Investigation Officer.

Leikai is still lying unclaimed at
RIMS morgue. The body
would be disposed off if no
claim is made before 1pm of
Nov 5, according to OC,

LAMKA, Nov 3: A 19 yearold youth was held late
yesterday and handed over
to Churachandpur police
after he was caught redhanded while allegedly
trying to rape an 8 year-old
girl at Khawpibung village.
Sources said that the
youth identified as
Nehkhohao (19) s/o
Laltinkhum of Valpakot
village reportedly preyed
on three minor girls who
were playing at a paddy
field near the village
yesterday evening. As he
attacked one of the girls
and covered her mouth
with his hand to prevent
her from screaming, two
of her friends attacked
the youth back in an
attempt to save their
friend and in the process
one of the two was
captured by the youth
while the first victim
managed to escape.
After the initial
struggle the other two
girls who escaped from
the clutches of the youth
ran to the village and
raised an alarm leading
to many of the villagers
rushing towards the
paddy field. The
villagers caught the youth
red-handed. He was
immediately apprehended
and handed over to the
police. The victim was
taken to Imphal today
for medico legal examination while the accused
was produced before the
CJM who remanded him
to police custody for
three days.

'Peace, Love and Understanding' was organised today by the
Lions Club of Imphal East at the
premises of Modern College,
Porompat. Students from various colleges took part in the
contest and the 1st prize of the
competition was awarded to

Wangkhei High School, 2nd
prize to Ksh Gopinath Singh
and 3rd prize to Oinam
Catherien of Maria Montessori
Senior Secondary School.

the horrifying incident she
had to undergo.
However, no counselling
has been provided to the victim so far against the
established norms and directions issued by the Supreme
Court of India.
The body demanded transferring of the investigation
task to CID (Crime Branch)
of Manipur Police Department in order to facilitate
impartial and proper investigation within a short period
of time; punishment to the
accused without further delay;
to record the statement of all
eye witnesses in the presence
of the victim's lawyer and to
ensure that the victim be kept
informed about the progress
of investigation.

Mayek would be included as
an optional paper in the matriculation examination. The
fresh batch of XI students, in
2015, would therefore require
teachers who can teach
Meetei Mayek, Athar added.

TC Foundation to Kohima Documentary Film fest inaugurated
hold Film convention
IMPHAL, Nov 3: Television & Cine Foundation (TC Foundation), Manipur will organise a Film Convention on November 9 at
MFDC complex from 11.30 am in connection with the Centre’s
aim to establish the 3rd Film & Television Institute of India in one
of the 8 Northeastern States, a statement issued by TC Foundation’s general secretary conveyed.
The Convention would deliberate on pursuance for securing the establishment of the Premier Film & Television
Institute in Manipur.
The decision to hold the Convention with its single agenda
as “Establish National Film & Television Institute in Manipur”
was adopted during an emergency executive meeting of the
Television & Cine Foundation, attended by the State’s eminent
filmmakers, film critics, senior film actors and technicians
alongside TC Foundation’s chief advisors, Aribam Syam
Sharma and RK Bidur, it added.
The meeting unanimously decided that the Convention is
critical, to make the Government of India take a judicious
decision, based on merits, while deciding which State will be
awarded the 3rd National Film & Television Institute and not
to yield to political pressures exerted by the States to grab the
premier institute in their favour. Out of 8 States in the region,
the race would be between Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal
Pradesh and Manipur.

Bhagyachandra National Festival of Classical Dance

Manipur will be held from 6
November to 9 November, said
a statement issued by the department today.

Kohima Documentary Film
Festival commenced here today
with the screening of some
internationally
acclaimed
documentaries at the state
academy auditorium.
Director of Art and Culture Nagaland, Vevo Sapu
inaugurated the festival organised by Guwahati-based
Film and Cultural Society of
North East in association with
Indian Documentary Producers'
Association
and
supported by Government of
Nagaland, Polish Institute and
Japan Foundation.
Documentaries related to
social consciousness as well
as economic and cultural issues would be screened
during the festival. Convenor

festivals like these are important as it helped to create
general awareness about exceptional movies. She said the

MDAVO to boycott
IMPHAL, Nov 3: Due to the alleged unmindful attitude, lies and
insincere dealings of the State Govt towards the Mapithel Dam
affected villagers, the Mapithel Dam Affected Villages' Organisation (MDAVO) has decided not to take up development
programmes relating to the project initiated by the IFCD and Forest Dept in the affected area until the inherent rights of the affected
tribal communities are honoured and their grievances are properly
addressed through expert review committee.
MDAVO decided this during a special emergency assembly held on Nov 1 at Riha village, according to a MDAVO
statement issued by its secretary, J Roshan.
The assembly also resolved to impose social boycott on the
leaders/members of Mapithel Dam Multipurpose Project Displaced Villages Committee (MDMPDVC) with immediate
effect due to their betrayal and many disturbing roles played
by them.
The leaders who have been socially boycotted as spelled
out by MDAVO included M Ngaranmi, KS Vanganing, Joy
Siro, LS Ningreingam, Ashang Kasar, LK Bipin, MV
Vareichung, Mathotmi Jajo, Jonathan Jajo, Samson Kasar, LK
Graceson, Ramthing Kashung, Haorei Mahong, James Kasar
and P Mahangmi.
They would not be given any platform in the affected area.
They are barred from taking any leadership in the area and no
cooperation will be extended to any programme initiated by
them with any organisation, the statement said.
TNAL clarifies, asserts
IMPHAL, Nov 3: Tangkhul Naga Aze Longphang (TNAL) has
clarified on the alleged claim of land dispute between Silent
Tangkhul and Saijang Meitei village stating that the area of dispute
is purely within the territory of Silent Tangkhul village as per the
Government Gazette publication.
Addressing the recent statement by the Saijang Meitei village demanding removal of the buried body of Silent Tangkhul
village headman as most unfortunate, it said the disputed area
has been at the cemetery site of the village since their forefathers' generation. A village headman, Sr Maipileng was also
buried at the same place.
TNAL has further expressed their desire for peace and
justice in the near future.
FLC on PMJDY held
IMPHAL, Nov 3: State Bank of India, Lead Bank Office, Imphal
Branch conducted financial literacy and credit counselling camps
at four places in Senapati, Imphal West and Thoubal districts from
Oct 31 to Nov 1. The camp was conducted at Taphou Liangmai
village, Senapati district on Oct 31, Sekmai, Langthabal and Irong
Chesaba on Nov 1. According to a statement, the camps were organised under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana under funding
from NABARD's FIF. Around 337 villagers participated in the
camps and 145 accounts were opened.
The benefits of opening bank accounts under PMJDY was
highlighted to the participants besides conducting counselling
on different banking products and ways to use them properly.
Reproductive, child health camp
IMPHAL, Nov 3: Nehru Yuva Kendra, Thoubal and the Keibung
Welfare Club organised a reproductive and child health camp at
Keibung Upper Primary School today.
CMO/Project Director, NRHM Thoubal deputed a team of
doctors, nurses, technical staff for ultrasound, pharmacist and
ASHAs along with the National mobile medical unit for the
health camp. Altogether, 70 women were given treatment and
24 women were provided free Ultrasound facility. Medicines
were provided to all the women after proper treatment and
advice by the medical officers, informed a statement. Md
Abdul Latif, Headmaster Keibung Primary School thanked the
medical team and NYK for organising the health camp.
