Workshop Description
This inaugural Middle East workshop is intended to focus on the combined interests
and capabilities of E&P operators, service companies, and technology providers to
identify the true value of distributed fibre-optic measurements by sharing field examples
and well-characterised development projects.
Technical sessions addressing these challenges will cover topics such as production
and injection flow profile interpretation, hydraulic fracturing and matrix stimulation
diagnostics, evolving and enabling technologies and integrated interpretation models,
advances in field installation techniques, and management of system reliability.
Preference will be given to technical presentations which use field examples and
case studies to demonstrate the value of optical sensing systems using distributed
temperature sensing (DTS), distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), quasi-distributed (array
temperature, pressure, and strain) technology, and to address challenges associated
with quantitative interpretation methods, balancing the value of the information against
added risk, cost of installations and support infrastructure, exception-based and
advanced analytic processes, and sensor-to-desk data management.

This session will be dedicated to fibre optic stimulation diagnostics and monitoring using distributed
sensing such as temperature (DTS) and potential other applications like distributed acoustic sensing
(DAS), and multiple sensing (MS). Case studies of stimulation analysis will be shared, followed by
group discussions on the value for monitoring and characterisation of fractures and reservoir behaviour.

Integrity monitoring has spawned and developed from more conventional deployments of fibre optic
distributed sensing. Arguably it is now the monitoring technology of choice, allowing for greater
understanding, spatial awareness, and in some cases a proactive measurement solution to avoid future
issues. This session will cover specific applications of fibre optic systems deployed to monitor integrity
in the E&P business.

analysis versus addressing the challenges faced from operational aspects will be discussed for fields
such as seismic profiling (VSP), micro-seismic, advanced completions, and production monitoring.

session will review case studies where fibre optic technologies are used to collect
data during completion, stimulation, production, and life of the well to increase value
to asset owners.

With application of in-well fibre optic technology on the rise, overall system reliability
and life cycle cost is fast becoming a key driver in acceptance and deployment of
these technologies. Overall speed of uptake will depend heavily on demonstrated
reliable performance over long periods of time. This session will focus on case
histories and technological advances where survival and longevity of the system,
inclusive of in-well fibre cable and surface acquisition and data delivery components
are of upmost importance.

Areal surveillance plays a key role in assessing the effectiveness of drive mechanisms
and EOR processes. In-well fibre optic technologies applied in injectors, producers
and observation wells have emerged as surveillance tools in near-field and far-field
monitoring. This session will discuss the various fibre optic technologies that can be
used in areal reservoir monitoring.

Workshop Guidelines
Format
Two (2) days of informal discussions prompted by
selected keynote presentations and discussions.
Workshops maximise the exchange of ideas among
attendees and presenters through brief technical
presentations followed by extended Q&A periods.
Focused topics attract an informed audience eager to
discuss issues critical to advancing both technology
and best practices. The majority of the presentations
are in the form of case studies, highlighting engineering
achievements, and lessons learnt. In order to stimulate
frank discussion, no proceedings are published and the
press is not invited to attend.
Documentation
•
Proceedings will not be published; therefore, formal papers and handouts are not expected from
speakers.
•
Work in progress, new ideas, and interesting
projects are sought.
•
Professionally-prepared visual-aids are not required;
PowerPoint presentations are most commonly used.
•
Note-taking by participants is encouraged.
Poster Session
The Steering Committee encourages registrations from
professionals who are able to prepare and present a
poster on a relevant project. For further details kindly

Attendance
Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve
basis. The Steering Committee encourages attendance
from those who can contribute to the workshop most
effectively either in discussions or with posters. A mix of
attendees in terms of geographic origin, companies, and
disciplines will be encouraged.
Workshop Deliverables
•
The Steering Committee will appoint a “scribe”
to record the discussions and to produce the full
workshop report for SPE.
•
This report will be circulated to all attendees as the
workshop deliverable within 4–6 weeks following the
workshop. The copyright of the report is with SPE.
•
PowerPoint presentation materials will be posted
on a specific SPE URL address after the workshop.
Provision of the materials by the speakers will signify their permission for SPE to do so.
Commercialism
In keeping with workshop objectives and the SPE
mission, commercialism in posters or presentations will
not be permitted. Company logos must be limited to the
title slide and used only to indicate the affiliation of the
presenter and others involved in the work.
Attendance Certificate
All attendees will receive an attendance certificate
attesting to their participation in the workshop. This
certificate will be provided in exchange for a completed
Workshop Questionnaire.
Continuing Education Units
Attendees at this workshop qualify for SPE Continuing
Education Units (CEU) at the rate of 0.1 CEU per hour of
the workshop.

Training Course Title: Introduction to Fibre Optic Distributed Temperature, Acoustic, and
Chemical Sensing (DTS, DAS, & DCS)
Course Description
This one-day course is an introduction to the emerging fibre optic technologies of distributed temperature
sensing (DTS) as well as related distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and distributed chemical sensing (DCS).
This programme looks at how these technologies work, and their application to the oil and gas industry. Such
systems have been utilised in shallow steam injection wells as well as high-cost horizontal and multilateral
wells where re-entry with a logging tool is difficult, if not impossible. This class also includes an overview of
PLATO software for managing DTS data and computing flow, plus a hands-on demonstration of DTS hardware.
Topics include:
• How DTS, DAS, and DCS technologies work
• Typical well installations, hardware, and log recordings
• Factors affecting data accuracy, calibration, and quality
• Field applications and examples of DTS and DAS
• PLATO software for DTS data management and computation of flow profile
• DTS demonstration
Course Objectives
The science behind DTS and its applications are still emerging. If you have been following this technology and
would like to learn more, this course is for you.
Who Should Attend
This course is for petroleum engineers, geologists, and anyone else interested in learning more about DTS and
the latest advances in the technology.
Course Instructor
James J. Smolen has more than 40 years of experience in cased hole well logging, applications, related
research, and training. He began in the oil industry in 1970 with Schlumberger and since 1980, has been
an officer and director of Petroleum Computing, as well as an international consultant and trainer. He has
numerous publications to his credit, including the 1996 PennWell text, Cased Hole and Production Log
Evaluation. Smolen was a Distinguished Lecturer for SPE and SPWLA. He holds a BS from Northwestern
University, and earned his MS and PhD degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.
