FOR FURTHER INFORMATION,
Last week we received the sad news that a senior local Kaumātua,
Eru Thompson, of Te Kawerau a Maki, Ngāti Te Ara, Ngāti Mahanga,
Ngāti Pukegna Tainui waka had passed away.
Eru had recently spent time at Avondale College in his role as Mana
Whenua. He was a highly respected Māori leader who will be missed
by the Avondale College community.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his whānau.
Moe mai rā e kara. Haere ki te kāpunipunitanga ō rātou kua huri ki

Sports Results
Cricket
The 1st XI cricket team played Kelston Boys the past two Saturdays.
Day 1 (1st Nov) results showed Avondale lost the toss and were sent
into bat first. Avondale made 278 runs after 88 overs. Ryan Burgess
had an excellent game with 62 runs. Other top scorers were Zubayr
Smith (45), Marcus Smilie (33), Blessing M (33), Mark Van Tilburg
(28) and Lithira Fonseka (25). Kelston went up to bat and made 18
runs for 3 after 19 overs. Day 2 saw Kelston continue batting with
their first innings result of 105/10 with their 2nd innings 161/6.
The 2nd XI Boys played a very strong Mt Albert team in the weekend.
Avondale won the toss and put MAGS into bat. The boys bowled accurately but we’re too short in lot of their balls and conceded far
too many runs. MAGS posted a substantial target of 192/28 overs.
Undaunted Avondale attacked the target with vigor and although
they started slowly, they picked up momentum and went into the
last 8 overs with a potential win on hand. Unfortunately, with the
loss of Arthur Mandisodza for 51 runs, Avondale slowed down to
end the game 21 runs short. The team, bolstered by some year 9’s,
showed pluck and courage but could not finish the season on a high.
Final score Avondale 171/7 – Mt Albert Grammar 192/7 of 28 overs.
The Year 10 Boys were up against St Kentigern College. Avondale
Batted first scoring 210 for 5 wickets in 30 overs. St Kents scored 84
runs all out. Boys had a really good game and were disciplined on
the field. They communicated well, outstanding performance from
Captain Liam Robertson who scored 59 runs.
The Year 9 team played Liston Jnr A at Liston College on Saturday.
Avondale won the toss and batted first, scoring 155 for 4 in 30 overs.
Kevin Gattu top scored with a very impressive 61 not out. Arsalla
Azimi scored 35. We then bowled Liston out for 80 runs, winning by
75. Best bowler was Dishan Gilitwala with 4 wickets for just 5 runs
in 3 overs.
Softball
Junior Girls Softball kicked off their season this week with a game
against Mt Albert Grammar. Majority of these girls are beginners
and are willing to learn more about the game. The team played
well and showed great sportsmanship however, Mt Albert was too
strong winning 14 – 1.
Touch
It was a great week for both Avondale touch teams this week. The
Junior Boys began with a game against Liston College. This was an
intense game with exceptional attacking and defensive plays, one
try a piece at half time. Both schools were unable to stretch out to
take the win, final score 1-1. The boys had an outstanding second
game against Massey winning by 7. After an intense first game, it
was great to see the boys come out with a win. Final score Avondale
10- Massey 3. Despite their loss last week, the Junior Girls touch
team came out strong this week against Henderson. Avondale was
dominant throughout the game scoring 6 tries to 1. Final score was
6 – 1 to Avondale. Both teams played extremely well this week and
should be proud of their results.
Volleyball
This week both the Junior Boys and Girls teams played their final
games for the season. Avondale Junior Girls 1 had their first game
against Waitakere. It was a close game between the two teams, unfortunately Avondale fell short, losing by 1 set. Waitakere won 2 – 1.
Despite losing their first game, the girls did really well, winning their
last two matches against Massey (2-1) and St Dominic’s (2-1). Our
Junior Girls 1 did very well this season placing 3rd overall.
The Junior Girls team 2 took on Henderson and Massey this week.
The game against Henderson was close as they had to play a third
set to decide a winner. Final result 2 – 1 to Henderson. Massey
proved to be too strong for Avondale as they won in two straight
sets. This is the first time a lot of these girls have played to together
and have demonstrated a thorough understanding of the game in
such a short space of time. The Year 10 girls move into the senior
school next year in the hopes of competing at Premier Level for the
school.
The Junior Boys played their final game of the season against
Kelston Boys. It was another close game, having to play a third set
to decide a winner. Kelston Boys came out on top winning the final
set, Kelston taking the win 2-1. The boys have all worked hard this
season and have improved a lot. They have a lot of talent coming
through with this team. Good efforts to everyone in the team.
The Junior Volleyball Teams are now training hard to compete at the
Auckland Secondary Schools Volleyball Championships held at the
Trusts Stadium on Thursday 20 November – Saturday 22 November.
Good Luck!
