*** October 22 Meeting Super 8 Hotel Westgate Rd. near Bartley Rd. and Hwy 97***
A Message from our New President - Peter Campbell
In this, my first message to you as President of your Club, I would like to thank you
for the confidence you have shown in me. I am very fortunate to draw inspiration
from our past presidents, most particularly Emile and Natalie, with whom I had the
great pleasure of working this past year.
First, I would like to thank the outgoing management committee, under Natalie’s
excellent leadership, for guiding our Club through a wonderful year. We enjoyed lots
of fun activities, deepened our friendships, all the while increasing our membership.
The year has presented some unexpected challenges, not the least of which was
juggling our meeting place, and the resulting extra expense, while The Westbank
Lions Community Centre is being rebuilt following the fire. We now expect to be
“home” for our January meeting, barring further delays. Until then we will be at the Super 8 for our October and
November meetings.
I am very much looking forward to working with our new management team this coming year. We are
fortunate to enjoy the continuing service and experience of A.D. MacLeod as Treasurer, of Bob Fulton as Chair
of the speakers committee (assisted this year by Alan Odynsky and Adona Dunn), and of Jerry Stinson as
newsletter Editor. New members include Wilma Griffin as Vice President, Linda Engels as Secretary, Rudy
Engels who will take over membership, Frank Renshaw who will guide our social activities (with an impressive
team comprising Linda Smithwick, Gail MacLeod, Marilyn North, Susan Forsyth and Linda Long), and
Darline Gough for Sunshine. My thanks, on behalf of all of us, for the contribution they are making to the
success of our club.
We now have some 11 activity groups, each coordinated by Club members. These make for a vibrant and
engaging Club. I would like especially to thank all the coordinators for their tremendous contribution in
providing so many opportunities for us to get to know each other better by participating in stimulating, fun and
engaging activities. Read further in the newsletter to see what they have in store for you.
As always, we welcome your suggestions as to how to make our club better. Please feel free to contact me or
any member of the management committee with your ideas.
Even as we continue to enjoy the glorious fall that the Okanagan so often offers, we know that winter is on its
way. For many of us this means that we can look forward to skiing and snowshoeing, others may be thinking of
places farther south, but one constant will always be the warmth of our relationship with our fellow PROBUS
members.
Here's to a great year.
Peter
PLEASE SEE LAST PAGE FOR NEW OFFICERS AND ACTIVITY COORDINATORS
Sunshine
Most of you will have heard that Stefan Howhy had an accident falling while travelling in Venice Italy and was
hospitalized there. He has now returned to Kelowna, is in good spirits, and is expected to be home soon.
If you know of anyone who should receive a card from our PROBUS Club, please contact Darline Gough.
You can reach Darline at: 250-769-0841; email: [email protected].
Membership
Most of the renewals have come in, but we still have a handful of stragglers. Renewal forms will be available
at the meeting. Nearly everyone who was a member last year has either renewed or has indicated that they plan
to maintain their membership.
If you can’t make it to the meeting please mail renewal form and cheque -$25 per person, to me:

GOOD FOOD AND FUN AT DINING-IN
Welcome everyone to a new season of PROBUS. We hope you are ready to start a great year.
The Dining In first rotation dinners are under way. We still could use 2 more couples to even out our numbers
so if you are interested in rejoining or are thinking about becoming new diners, please email Joyce or me and
we will include you in our next dinner.
We ask all new members to consider joining. It is nice to become better acquainted with your fellow PROBUS
members and that can be so much fun over a glass of wine and a great dinner. There will be sign-up forms on
the tables at the September meeting. Please let us know your holiday schedule and your preferred month to host.
We try to ensure that you dine with different couples each rotation but that can be quite a challenge with the
travellers in this group, so we ask that you bear with us and we will try our best.
If you have any questions please contact Joyce or Brenda by phone or e-mail.
Joyce Roydell (769-5365) and Brenda Karvonen ( 768 -1898), Coordinators
This group is temporarily inactive, we have no coordinator for this activity! Please consider helping out or
taking on this activity.

The walking group has been pretty active. On September 30, Murray Marchant and Susan Baumann led a walk
in Bear Creek Regional Park, and on October 7, Gary and Darline Gough took a group of 12 walkers through
Kalamoir Regional Park. It was a perfect Okanagan day with temperatures for October in the 20C range. The
views from the higher trails of Okanagan Lake were spectacular with many of the trees and shrubs in fall
foliage.
On October 21 Doug Karvonen will take the group to Lost Lake in the Myra Bellevue Park, while on
November 4 Marg Cunningham is planning a walk along Veneer Creek on the Westside. The final walk of the
fall season on November 18 will be led by Sheila Taylor. Details will be send out close to the date of the walks.
If you have any questions or suggestions contact Sheila Taylor ([email protected]) or Emile Brokx
([email protected]).
We are so delighted to know our walking group includes so many enthusiasts, who so readily offer to lead
walks on our myriad amazing trails!
If you haven't joined us already, do come out with us!

Would you be interested in a “Mini Course” presentation dealing with how to handle files and folders on your
PC computer, and how to manage your inventory of photos, and perfom basic editing and “fixes”? I get
questions frequently about these topics and have presented a show and tell session for the Digital Camera
group on this topic several years ago. Perhaps this could be repeated for a larger group or a joint session of the
two groups. Please let me know of your interest, and I will try to arrange.
Questions/problems? Call Jerry at 250-768-7633 or email [email protected]
Is this you???

Digital Photography -Camera Club
The Camera Club of the PROBUS Club of Westside meets at 2 PM on the first Friday of the month at the Westwood
Retirement Resort in West Kelowna. Anyone of any ability or experience is welcome to participate.
Generally, the format followed has been to go as a group on a photo shoot somewhere in and around Kelowna and
return to the Westwood Resort at 2 pm. to show pictures taken. Meetings are currently scheduled for November,
December, February, March, April, May and June.
Photos from recent outings will be presented on posters at the first meeting back at the Lions Community Centeranticipated for January. So get going on your posters NOW!.
The "Assignment" for the 7 November meeting is to take pictures of "Fish", most likely of either the Adams
River salmon run and/or a local kokanee run.
See: http://www.tourismkamloops.com/adams-river-sockeye-salmon-run-in-kamloops-british-columbia
for information on the Adams River salmon run. Carpooling or teaming up with other PROBUS members as
part of a general club outing is suggested.
Another suggested fall outing is to tour some vineyards- for photographic purposes of course!! But you don’t have
to wait until fall for this!

NEW ACTIVITY---? Formal or informal?
GAMES NIGHT
Games such as Ditch the Queen, Pegs and Jokers, Sequence, Golf and Mexican Train have so far come to mind.
We are certain you will have others.
We think the group size should be 8 – 12 and if we get more than 12 interested, we can have more than one
group.
At this stage our idea is for the host to provide simple munchies/snacks, the tables (others will be able to help)
and choose the games for that evening (phoning around for ideas and provision of the games is perfectly
acceptable).
We suggest meeting once a month, in rotation at each of our homes from September through March/April.
Evenings(7.00 – 10.00 ?) might be preferable but we do not rule out daytime get-togethers.
So we are asking for anyone interested to sign up at the October Members’ Meeting. When signing up
please indicate: preferred day, evening or daytime, suggested games – to add to our list!
This is primarily about fellowship and fun – the games (and snacks!) are a vehicle to achieve that aim
Nedra & Gerald Schuler, Maria & Frank Renshaw
- (Ogopogo PROBUS)
Any interested member of either Westside PROBUS or Ogopogo PROBUS is welcome.

The year-end lunch at O’Keefe Ranch and visit to ‘Art in the Garden’ at the home studio of Michael Jell,
Vernon, attracted a group of 16 eager participants. (See photos). We began our new year with another big
attraction, a presentation by Stefan Hohwy of the Westside club entitled “Earthenware to Bone China”, a slide
show and hands-on demonstration with examples of porcelain, majolica and other forms of the ceramic arts.
For more details or to be added to the email list, contact Pam Laing at 766-6808 or [email protected].

Of Interest?? Communication received by President(Nathalie Wheatley)
Greetings,
My name is Suzanne Bell and I am currently pursuing my PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa. As part
of my dissertation research I am looking for women 50 years of age or older to participate in a study on older adult
women’s experiences in intimate relationships.
I originally contacted the Probus club in my hometown of Huntsville, Ontario. They were fantastic and included information
about my study in the President’s Message section of their April newsletter. I was wondering if there is any way I could
circulate information about my study and/or one of my flyers (attached) among the members of your community. I have
had about 120 women take part so far, but I need quite a few more for my results to be meaningful.
You can get more information/complete my study at:
www.surveymonkey.com/s/IntimateWomen
I would really appreciate any help, thanks so much!
