Description:
This course presents an overview of information technologies, identifies and discusses the
fundamental principles underlying these technologies, and examines how these technologies
are applied to many areas of our society, including government and industry. Real-world
examples and state-of-the-art technologies will be used to cover issues faced by today's IT
professionals including security, legal and ethical issues and the consideration of the
environmental impact of technology. Additional topics such as the exploration of IT careers
and certifications and the past, present and future of information technology in the
globalization of our world will also be covered.

Access Requirements:
Students are required to use Microsoft Office products to complete assignments and take
examinations for this course. Students are NOT required to purchase the software or to own a
computer as computers for student use are available in LSSC’s Libraries and Learning Centers
on each campus. You may need to arrange your schedule to be able to use on-campus
computers to complete your assignments.
It is the student’s responsibility to have an alternative plan if their main computer
system fails or encounters technical issues that prevent the completion of required
assignments by the specified due date (i.e. – complete work on-site at a campus library
or learning center, have a secondary computer available, etc.). Computer hardware,
software and/or printer problems are not acceptable excuses for incomplete or
late assignments.
Students in this course will examine the major themes of Information Technology,

Any student with a documented disability who requires assistance or academic
accommodations should contact the Office for Students with Disabilities immediately
to discuss eligibility. The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) is located on the
Leesburg Campus, but arrangements can be made to meet with a student on any

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34
CFR Part99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of a student’s education records.
In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records
located in the Admissions/Registrar’s Office.
This is an online course so all work will be completed online through LSSC’s Blackboard
Learning Management System. Although we do not meet at a specific time, students are
required to “check-in” on a regular basis, completing assignments, working on group projects
and participating in class discussions.
Homework Policy
It is your responsibility to complete all assigned exercises on time. All assignments must be
turned in via the Blackboard by 11:00pm on Fridays of each week. All homework
assignments must be turned in using Microsoft’s file extensions (i.e. .docx, .xlsx, etc.). Other
file formats will receive a grade of zero.
Discussion Boards/Current Events (Class Participation)
 Each student is required to participate in class through discussion boards.
 Be sure to keep up with the weekly assignments to ensure that you complete required
postings.

Professional Development activities
Students will be required to complete and summarize a minimum of three (3) professional
development activities throughout the semester. Information will be provided within
Blackboard at the beginning of the semester.
Chapter Quizzes and Projects
There will be no makeup of chapter work for any reason. Chapter activities will be
available online via Blackboard for a period of several days. You must make time to
complete weekly assignments during the time provided. If you wait until the last date
of availability and an emergency arises that prevents you from completing your work,
you will not be granted an extension for any reason. There will be no exceptions to
this rule, so it is imperative that you plan your time.
If you wish to withdraw from the course, you must go to the Admissions Office
and submit the formal course withdrawal form by the required date. If you do not
complete the course and do not formally withdraw, you will receive a failing grade.

Online Course Policies
This is an online course. All of your learning will take place when you read the online
resources, do the assignments, and communicate with the class over the Internet via our online
classroom in Blackboard. Please realize that even though the class never meets in person, you
are still expected to do the same amount of work as classes that meet 2.75 hours a week for the
fifteen week semester. In addition to covering the course materials, time for homework
assignments and studying for quizzes and tests should be expected. Visit

All students are expected to use the LSSC Blackboard (www.lssc.blackboard.com) system for
their work. If you have never used an online course management system before, you may need
to take some extra time at the beginning of the term to familiarize yourself with this system.
Classroom Rules and
Policies:
For those who do not have access to a computer or are having computer problems, computers
are available on LSSC’s campuses in the library and/or Learning Centers – check the LSSC
website for hours of operation. Problems with your computer at home will not serve as an
excuse to turn in work late. Be sure to keep backups of your work at all times to avoid losing
points should your computer suddenly fail to function or your storage device crash.
It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of assignment due dates and to ensure that
assignments are turned in on time. The following common student mistakes will not constitute
a valid excuse for turning in late homework and should be avoided by all students (Students
should check the correctness of their work before sending):
1. Doing the homework on time but forgetting to send it to the instructor by the deadline.
2. Submitting the homework on time but not including the proper homework
attachment(s).
3. Logging into Blackboard, accessing the Assignment, attaching the homework, and
forgetting to hit the Submit button.
Course Conduct
Please note that students are expected to be courteous and respectful of one another in
their posts to the course bulletin board. We will be polite and helpful to one another,
just as we would be if we were in a classroom together. Students who violate this rule
will be immediately disciplined in the manner deemed appropriate by the course
instructor.
Fairness Policy
Lake-Sumter State College is a great place for students with multiple obligations to
pursue an education, as we offer many different class scheduling options and we are
committed as an institution to helping students reach their goals. However, it is crucial
to the success of our students after graduation (or upon transfer) that we maintain the
academic integrity of our classes. Please understand that all students must earn grades
using the same scale in order to maintain integrity and provide a level of fairness to all
students within a class. Unfortunately, it is not possible to grade students based on
what they are experiencing in their individual personal lives because many
students are working full time and supporting and raising families, often as single
parents. While I am always willing to talk to you and to advise you through difficult
times, it would not be fair to your fellow classmates, many of whom are going through
or have gone through similar situations, for me to make grading exceptions for one
student based on their life situation.

Instructor responsibilities
 I will check Blackboard for questions and concerns each day from Monday
through Friday. I will notify the class in advance if I will be unable to access
the course on a specific weekday throughout the semester.
 I am available to meet with students on campus or online by appointment,
Monday through Friday.
 I am always happy to help students who plan ahead and work hard. I may not
have time to help students who leave their work until it is too late to be
successful. Your work and your grade are only as important to me as they are
to you.
Lake-Sumter State College has a policy of zero tolerance for violence as stated in
College Board Rule 2.17. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance
with Board Rule 2.17.
