“How do I love thee…let me count the ways”.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)
What would happen if we would say:
“How do I give thanks…let me count the ways”.
The holiday spirit is upon us. Stores are crowding Halloween, Thanksgiving,
Hanukkah, and Christmas all in the same aisle. Why are we pushing
everything together? Does this mean our lives are so rushed that we have no
time to celebrate each event? Our world moves fast but does that mean we at
Laurelhurst have to adapt to the world’s commotion? At this time in one’s life,
we have the gift of time. Time to reflect, recall and give thanks for our
blessings.
Thanksgiving began as a Harvest Celebration in the early 1620s. In 1789
George Washington proclaimed it the first National Holiday and in 1863
Thanksgiving became an annual holiday in the United States. Thanksgiving
is expressed as a prayer of gratitude.
As Elizabeth Browning in her famous poem expressed all the ways that one can
“love” let us count our many ways we are thankful. Each day relax and reflect
on one thing that you are thankful for that day. Write down one blessing a day
for an entire year. Next Thanksgiving your list will have expanded into 365
ways of saying “Thank You”. A very simple thing you can do each morning.
Write the word or pray the word and it will bring you “Blessings of peace-filled
gratitude”
If you would like special paper to write your daily word there will be a basket
full of paper in the Terrace (by the yummy cookies). Take one and begin
writing.
May grace surround you, may laughter bless you and may abundance
fill you with gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving! - - Sister Kathleen Hecht
