Twice Yearly
Chores
In the United States,
Daylight Saving Time
(DST) ends November 2,
which means our clocks
will fall back an hour from
2:00 A.M. to 1:00 A.M. (and we will gain an
hour of sleep). Interestingly, Hawaii and Arizona
don’t participate in DST, so their residents won’t
get an extra hour of rest. In Europe, they do not
call it DST, but Summer Time, and it ends on
October 26 at 1:00 A.M.
Regardless of where you live, the twice-yearly
adjustment to DST offers an opportunity to take
care of some important twice-yearly chores. Many
fire departments advise us to change our smoke
alarm batteries on this day. And since scaling a
ladder to check all the smoke alarms isn’t enough,
here are some other chores to handle twice yearly.
For one, don’t forget to rotate your mattress! Take
a good look at your bed. You may have made a
lasting impression on it, or it may be starting to
sag. Rotating and flipping your mattress will help it
wear more evenly. Some new and improved
mattresses may not require flipping, but even they
should be rotated. If you have a vacuum handy,
it’s also a good idea to rid your mattress of dust.
Another chore is changing the furnace filter.
Because we spend most of the winter inside,
our heating systems usually work all day to heat
our homes. A new furnace filter will purify the
air in the house. If you have a pet or allow
smoking in your home, these filters also remove
pet dander and smoke from the air. While it
may be a good idea to check your filter every
three months, DST is the perfect reminder to
change it.
Still looking for more chores? Check your pantry,
refrigerator, and medicine cabinet for expired
products. Or, if you’re not a fan of DST, then this
may be the perfect reminder to write a letter to
Congress to abolish the practice.
November Birthdays
Those born between November 1–21 are
passionate Scorpios, considered the most
intense sign in the zodiac. While on the outside
Scorpios are calm and composed, inside they
are forceful, emotional, determined, and
ambitious. If you were born between November
22–30, you are Sagittarius, the Archer. Archers
are optimistic, energetic, generous, and
honest. They enjoy exploration and keep open
minds during new encounters.

Resident “Spotlight”
Rhoda Ritter
Rhoda Applebaum was born in 1930. While a
student at Brooklyn College, Rhoda met fellow
student, Roy Schenburg, and the two were
married in 1948. Rhoda left school and took a
secretarial job while Roy finished his degree at
Brooklyn College. In the early 1950’s, Roy was
drafted to serve in the Korean War. A few years
after his return from overseas, the couple’s first
daughter, Cora, was born. A second daughter,
Kathy followed nearly four years later.
Rhoda was content to remain a housewife, like
the other women in the neighborhood, but
she’d always regretted not completing her
education, and when Cora was in kindergarten
and Kathy a toddler, Rhoda enrolled in night
courses at Paterson State University where she
completed her B.A., then later her Master’s
Degree. She became a speech therapist and
later as a teacher. In the early 1970’s, she fell
into a job that would change her life.
Educator Helen “Bobbie” Hansen and a small
team of colleagues created and piloted a
program for inner-city children at Dale Avenue
School in Paterson, New Jersey, a district
known for extreme poverty and poor
academics. Bobbie hired Rhoda as Reading
Specialist. The program proved a great
success. Children learned to read, write and do
math on or above grade-level and Dale Avenue
School was cited as a model school.
Bobbie and Rhoda travelled around the country
teaching other educators the Dale Avenue
methods. Rhoda’s daughters, then in middle
and high school, remember not seeing their
mother much in those days she travelled.
Rhoda remained a teacher in the Paterson
school system, even after the Dale Avenue
project lost its funding due to budget cuts. She
taught under Principal Joe Clark, who became
the basis for the main character in the 1989 film
Lean on Me.
At fifty, Rhoda was a widow. While taking courses
at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, she met
Arthur Ritter she remarried. But, in 1983, Rhoda
found herself widowed for the second time. Once
again, Rhoda rallied, plugging away at her
coursework until she became a successful
psychoanalyst. Rhoda counseled patients and
taught at the Psychoanalytic Institute where she
wrote and published both scholarly and popularthemed articles. Rhoda was delighted when she
became a grandmother.
Rhoda’s happiness became complete in 1999,
when she met Edmond Carley. They quickly
recognized each other as soul mates and began
travelling often, visiting their children and
grandchildren. Rhoda and Edmond also ventured
to France, Italy and Russia. At 80 years of age,
Rhoda decided to retire and live in Long Island,
New York with Edmond. She planned to spend
her retirement years writing papers, reading and
enjoying her new-found leisure time.
Rhoda came to live at the Heritage Inn in 2013.
Although Rhoda’s oldest brother passed away in
2013, her children feel blessed to be close to her
and her surviving siblings, Lila and David.
Rhoda’s children are thankful for the long,
productive life their mother led.
