presented at the bi-annual meeting of the
Southern Association for Counselor Education
and Supervision in Birmingham, AL, Oct.18.
Dr. Teresa Haase will be presenting at the
annual meeting of the Virginia Counselors

Dr. Cheree Hammond, and Dr. Nate Koser
will be attending the conference
Dr. Nate Koser has recently established the
Harrisonburg Center for Psychoanalysis, and
the work of the Center has begun with the
formation of a reading group addressing the
question: What is a psychoanalytic clinic?
Dr. Koser also delivered a paper presentation
entitled, “Of Anguish and a Feast,” at the
12th annual conference of the Affiliated
Psychoanalytic Workgroups, “On Desire.”
He is currently working on another paper
addressing the Lacanian and Freudian
perspective on depressive states, and this
will be presented at the Lacanian Forum
of Washington D.C.’s annual International

Marketing &
Communications
What's in a logo?
Think about the Nike "swoosh" or McDonald's
"golden arches." Those images tell a story. Now
think about EMU's logo. Does it tell the story of
EMU effectively? We are asking this question as
part of a brand revitalization process to coincide
with centennial celebration planning and
strategic planning. We do not plan to change the
logo. Right now, we want feedback from faculty,
staff, students, alumni and others... what story
does the EMU logo tell? Does the current logo
still work? What should we consider changing, if
anything?
Please complete the survey under "Brand ID
review" at emu.edu/marketing. Thank you!
Editor-in-chief Bonnie Price Lofton is midway
through a world-wide trip to visit and interview
alumni of the Summer Peacebuilding Institute.
Bonnie is connecting with 12 "off-shoots" or
"SPI-like" institutes that have grown up around
the world, thanks to lessons learned here in
Harrisonburg. The resulting content will fill a
special winter 2015 issue of Peacebuilder
magazine to mark 20 years of the program. We
hope it will also energize those people spread
around the world to have these connections
made and perhaps entice funders to support
these, as well as new, centers around the world.
Lauren Jefferson, who has been writing for EMU
on a freelance basis for over a year, is serving
as acting editor-in-chief while Bonnie travels.
She may be reached at extension 4634 or at
[email protected]. Welcome Lauren!
Andrea Wenger (department director)
participated in the annual Anabaptist
Communicators conference Oct. 24 and 25, at
Mennonite Central Committee offices in Akron,
PA. The theme was "Are Anabaptists ready to
go big?" with keynote addresses by Todd
Wynward (author, educator and wilderness
guide of Albuquerque, NM) and Barth Hague
(associate vice president for university relations
and chief marketing office, Wichita State).
Anyone is welcome to join the Anabaptist
Communicators Facebook page to be part of a
network of writers, editors, designers, marketers,
with Anabaptist connections.
Andrea Wenger and Mike Zucconi (information
officer) presented Oct. 28 to the monthly
gathering of the Public Relations Council of the
Valley about the EMU listening process and how
EMU managed communication flow, media
requests and messaging during that time.
Optima EAP Update
“The people who accept criticism are the ones
who are genuinely interested in selfimprovement.”
~~ Anonymous
When criticism comes our way, we all suddenly
turn into starship warriors, immediately
deploying force fields to protect ourselves
against the discomfort and judgment that comes
with it. Yet, by doing that, we often prevent
ourselves from realizing the stellar opportunity
that criticism offers.
Criticism, even that which we feel is groundless,
provides an opportunity to better understand
ourselves or understand how others perceive us.
And we can use that understanding to make
necessary improvements in ourselves and/or in
our interactions with others.
So when we say we are “accepting criticism,” we
mean that we are accepting the opportunity it
offers to support ourselves and our personal
effectiveness. And that’s something we don’t
want to protect ourselves from!

Provost Office
Wellness Committee
You are invited to attend the Oct. university
colloquium on Nov.19, at 4:00 pm in mainstage
theater with Dr. Dan Willingham, professor of
psychology at UVA.
Make your appointment count by Kelly
Thomson, MSHP
Dan's presentation is entitled: "Are New
Technologies Changing the Way Kids Think?"
Have you ever left the doctor’s office wishing
you would have asked more questions or
received better clarification about your health?
Since your appointment time is limited, it is
important to prepare ahead of time to maximize
the benefits of your visit. Follow these tips for
what to do before, during, and after an
appointment:
Before:
• Prepare for your visit by making a list of
questions and concerns that you would like to
address with your doctor, as it is easy to forget
during your appointment.
• Create a health history of current and past
conditions or surgeries. It is also helpful to know
your immediate family’s health history.
• Bring a list of all the medications you’re
currently taking. It should include prescription
and non-prescription drugs, vitamins, or natural
remedies, such as herbal products.
• Consider asking a friend or a family member to
come with you to your appointment. It can be
overwhelming to obtain so much information in a
short period of time, so they can help you listen,
take notes, and offer support.
• Make sure that your doctor accepts your
insurance.
During:
• Ask questions and discuss any symptoms you
have experienced and how often those
symptoms occur.
• Be honest and do not leave out details. There
is no need to feel embarrassed around your
doctor, as he or she has likely heard it before
and wants to help you.
• Take notes to help you remember explanations
or instructions that your doctor provides.
• Tell your doctor about future plans, including
trying to get pregnant, traveling abroad, or
training for a marathon. This information may
help you and your doctor make applicable plans
for you to be healthy and safe.
• Find out what the next step is. Ask when you
should schedule a follow-up.
After:
• Call your doctor’s office to get your test results
if it doesn’t provide you with them in the
timeframe it said it would.
• Call if you need something explained to you
again. If you do not understand a part of the
notes or instructions, it is better to ask for
clarification than to guess.
• Consider any lifestyle changes your doctor
suggested. Diet, exercise, stress, sleep, and the
use of tobacco and alcohol contribute to your
overall health. It’s never too late to make a
healthy choice and change things for the better.
