Carlos Says…
Nearly a dozen years ago,
when I was plucked and
promoted from a reporter
covering human interest
features and a handful of
news items to the post of
editor, a well-known and
respected local dignitary
forewarned me, welcoming
me to the “hot seat.”
I had no idea at that
time how accurate this
individual’s
forewarning
would prove to be true.

Before long, this warning

proved to be absolutely
correct, as I was soon
taken to task publicly from
time to time. At times, it
felt unfair, the fact that
my humble profession as
a private citizen thrust me
from a sense of comfortable
anonymity to the level of
scrutiny typically reserved
for public officials. But I
accepted it – in mild protest
– and still do.
To those who have won
elected positions, I welcome

heads from time to time.
It’s nothing personal. I’ve
already been there. And
I have a public to answer
to – as do you. But I will
remind you – you sought the
office of an elected official.
You are no longer a private
citizen. You no longer enjoy
the anonymity that private
citizens enjoy.
Your every decision, every
move and action, is subject
to public scrutiny, and as
a member of the Fourth
Estate, it is my duty and the
duty of the editorial staff of
this newspaper to report on
these actions and decisions.
While some publications
choose to paint things in
a positive light, hindering
their duty to the public,
we will not. We will treat
you fairly, but at the end of
the day, our duty is to the
public.
I look forward to working
with each and every one of
you, as does every member
of the editorial staff of
this newspaper. Come Jan.
1, 2015, we will move
from personal ties and
friendships to an era of
working relationships that
– at times – may appear to
put us at odds.
I and every member of
The Herald’s staff have an
open door policy. We will
always avail ourselves to be
accessible to you. As public
servants, I hope you return
the favor.
