PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
LEADERSHIP IN 2015 - It has been amazing to read the student applications for a

FROM THE REC
Congratulations to the children who received the
Sacrament of Penance for the first time on Monday
evening! May God bless you now and forever
more!
I thank the teachers, Kathy Chifley, Caz Barratt and Lisa
Lynch for their work in preparing the children for the Sacrament of Penance. I appreciate the assistance of Helen Bower
and Lyn Burgett as they always help at our night and for St
Philomena’s. I hope all families were able to support their children at this special time in their lives.
Remembrance Day
My appreciation goes to Year 5 teachers and students for a
reflective and solemn Remembrance Liturgy on Tuesday, 11th
November. We pray for world peace and for an end to war and
conflict.
DEBATING
On Wednesday 12th November Assumption hosted St Philomena’s for the final round of the Primary Debating Competition. Our team members of Abby- Lee Burden-Premus, Hugh
McIntyre, Tim Powell, Sharonee Anton-Ravindrakumar, Grace
Hogan-Chidiac and Jordan Thurn were the affirmative for the
topic ‘That T.V. is good for us’. Our students put forward a
strong case and presented their arguments well but were unfortunately defeated by a very strong St Philomena’s negative
team. Debating has been a great experience for our Year 6 students to learn skills in public speaking and thinking on their
feet. Pictured are the Debating members for Round 3.

Big Book Search - Next week senior borrowing will finish and
K-3 will end in Week 8. It is hoped that a full book stocktake
will be completed over the coming weeks and your help at
home will make this so much easier. It’s that time of the year
again when we need everyone looking high and low for “lost”
books and bring them home to roost for the Christmas break.
Look out for anything with an Assumption barcode so long as it
has not been crossed out. (You get to keep those.)
Book sale - There are some books available for sale in the library for 50c each. Most suitable for Years 4 - 6. Parents welcome. In addition if you still have a VCR we have some interesting non fiction videos to give away. Alternatively if anyone
knows how best to dispose of old videos please let me know.
Thanks - Thanks to Jessika Day-Stephen, Sienna and Sheridan
Sutherland who have donated some great titles to the library
this week. Your generosity is appreciated and all donations find
a home in the library or classrooms.
Thanks also to our hard working parents who cover books for
us. This is a generous donation of your time and we really appreciate it.

The Hunter School
of Performing Arts
Congratulations to Caitlin Stevens!
After a very competitive audition process by
hundreds of students, Caitlin from Year 5 has
been accepted into The Hunter School of Performing Arts, a fully selective school for gifted
and talented performing arts students. During
Year 6 and 7 Caitlin will perform in various
ensemble groups and undertake extra compulsory studies in music, dance and drama before specialising
from Year 8 in her chosen areas of Music and Dance. Caitlin will
be also looking forward to learning how to surf!

This was a rewarding and enjoyable time in my career and I
returned to Assumption in June, 2002.
In September, 2002, we dedicated the front garden to celebrate
the 50th Anniversary of Assumption. Father Harry and lots of
Sisters of St Joseph attended, as well as many parents and exstudents.
Assumption was one of the first schools to erect gates and fences around the whole place. The school gardens are a credit to
the work of Lyn Burgett. Lyn and the captains have collected
prizes for the school in the Bathurst Spring Spectacular Garden
Competition. The front garden in spring is my favourite landscape scene at Assumption.
A major development for the school was the grassed ovals for
the play areas. Work on the ovals was immense. Retainer walls,
irrigation lines, seeding the fields, bore installation, outside
stage, bore pump, flood lights, as well as the undercroft and
placement of play equipment, shade sails, plant nursery, green
house, weather station, underground water tank, upgrade of
infants toilets, small car park for staff, Piper Street driveway,
upgrade of electrical switchboard, solar energy panels, mobile

P&F continued to be proactive in raising funds with such exciting events as: Bush dances, Masquerade Ball, Dinner dances,
Food Van at the Show, Mystery Bus Tours, Spellathon, Parents’ and Students’ Trivia Nights, Golf Days, bus travel to Sydney Musicals, Regional Wine Dinner and Father Mac’s Christmas Puddings orders.

were all introduced, implemented or completed.
2007 we celebrated Father Harry’s 50th Anniversary Jubilee.
World Youth Day was celebrated in Sydney in 2008. Kurt
Fearnley was an inspirational guest speaker at school.
Two members of staff were very unwell with Whooping
Cough. In fact, whooping cough became rampant in the latter
part of 2002 in the Bathurst Community. In 2009, Peter needed
to take some leave due to poor health, as a result of trying to
fight the effects of whooping cough. He then has ME.
On 2nd September, 2008, 4 students and I attended Mass to
celebrate the silver jubilee of the ordination to the priesthood of
Father Pat, who grew up in Perthville. He was ordained on the
same day, in the same Cathedral 25 years previously. The Parish Renewal Team visited Assumption when they were in Bathurst. In 2008, Mayor Toole, Peter and I attended the sealing of a
time capsule that included the placement of a Year 6 photo, in
the Cathedral. The time capsule is located in the floor of the
tower and includes other community records.
The students have participated in Gala Days at Mudgee, Oberon
and Orange. After her unfortunate accident, we had an Evening
for Emilie Dinner dance to raise funds for her. We had the dinner, dancing, a guest speaker, Anna Windsor, and an auction.
The evening raised almost $25 000. Student Council held a
Playing Sport Day for Emilie as well. ICT purchases have been
continually made and upgraded. Student Council donated money to a school in Victoria affected by the bushfires.
My attendance at the Year 6 Christian Living Camp at Lake
Burrendong for the last 11 years has been a joy and a load of
fun viewing the students’ personal growth of their faith and
personal attributes. The Year 6 students also began to run Assumption’s Biggest Morning Tea and Mr Toole ran the Easter
Hat Parade and we have had Book Week Parades. In 2007,
Toolie became the Mayor of Bathurst.
