Dear all
Thank you to all in the Wellington Point State High School community for
the warm welcome and support you have given in my first three weeks as
Principal. In my short time here it is clearly visible that Wellington Point is an
outstanding school with some wonderful opportunities available to
students. From classroom walkthroughs to formal awards evenings, the
environment has certainly been a warm and engaging one.
Last week was a busy week on the school calendar with our annual
academic awards evening and annual sports awards evening. Both evenings
were an absolute credit to the school community. The student
performances from the Arts Department and the celebration of student
success and achievements were a pleasure to witness. Congratulations to all
students who achieved awards over the two evenings and I encourage you
to continue with your current positive attitude and diligence that have
earned you success and recognition this year. Also, a sincere thank you to all
staff who spent countless hours coordinating both events to ensure the
nights were such a success.
With only a short time until the end of the school year it is important that
every student continues to arrive on time and engage in active learning.
Every minute of every day counts whilst you are at school and every lesson
is an opportunity to know more today than you did yesterday. So, be
focused and study hard for your final assessment pieces, to ensure you
provide yourselves with every opportunity to succeed.
Finally, to our year 12 cohort - with only 2 weeks to go until you complete
your high school years, enjoy your final few lessons, your graduation and
your formal. Also take the time to thank everyone at Wellington Point State
High School who has contributed enormously to your education over the
past 5 years. I wish you the very best of luck with your future endeavours
and encourage you to always work hard and look to the future with
optimism and excitement as your new journey begins.

3pm – 4pm. Teachers and senior academic leaders are on hand to provide support, guidance and mentoring of

In June, Year 10 Business Studies
and
Technology
students
participated in End of Financial Year
celebrations, sponsored by the
Institute of Chartered Accountants
Australia. One of the activities
students undertook on the day was
a mystery game looking for missing
money and the perpetrator. In
order to succeed, they needed to
demonstrate a flair for creative
problem solving and an ability to
think on their feet. It was an
Australia wide competition with a
grand prize of $2000.
Mishell Ye happened to be the lucky
winner of a Samsung Galaxy tablet by participating in the competition. Well
done, Mishell, for being a learner who is willing to have a go and is ready to
learn, makes the most of her learning opportunities and get involved in
activities. Celebrate your success!
Youth Olympic Games Wellington Point Connection
Year 10 student Jessica Sutton represented Australia as the only female archer at the 2014 Summer Youth
Olympic Games in Nanjing, China over 16-28 August. Jessica competed in both individual and mixed team
events across 3 days of competition. While Jessica did not score a medal for her efforts, Wellington Point SHS
congratulates her for reaching the pinnacle event in world youth sport.
While Jessica was in China at the Youth Olympics,
her older sister Emily Sutton, who is a past student
of Wellington Point SHS, was representing
Australia in the World Archery Field
Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. Emily, now a
University of Queensland student, continues to
juggle study demands with her sport. While Emily
did not score a medal for her efforts, Wellington
Point SHS also congratulates her on this wonderful
achievement.
More success for our Strings Ensemble—Mrs Julie
Schmidt
Students in the Wellington Point SHS String Ensemble have continued to
work incredibly hard this semester. In week 2 this term, the Strings
Ensemble had the opportunity to compete in the Prestige Musicfest which
was held at Calamvale Community College.
Musicfest is a competition in which students from state and private schools
compete in a friendly environment. Students travelled from as far as
Bundaberg to participate in the festival. The group from Wellington Point
played three pieces for the adjudicator, and were rewarded for their hard
work by achieving a silver award in their section!

The purpose of inviting students to sit the tests was to:a) measure each student’s current literacy and numeracy skills set,
b) enable teacher teams to work collaboratively in designing and
implementing data-informed literacy and numeracy programs
c) provide feedback to students in terms of their strengths and areas that
need attention and to set goals for the short and medium term in order to
improve their capability, and
d) to simulate the experience of sitting NAPLAN tests in a high school setting,
in readiness for the May 12 - 14 NAPLAN tests in 2015 (i.e. Term 2)
Over the coming weeks, teachers will meet to analyse the test data and
conference with each student regarding his/her strengths, areas that need
attention and strategies to help improve his / her literacy and numeracy skills.


Language Conventions tests which assess a) Spelling and b) Grammar &
Punctuation skills,
The Writing test – which requires students to write a persuasive piece in
response to the topic Change a Rule or Law (See the stimulus* on page 5)
and
Two Numeracy tests: one in which a calculator was allowed and one that
required mental calculations only.
The stimulus on page 5 is what students were required to respond to
during the practice test. In fact, it was the stimulus for the 2014 NAPLAN
writing test. The persuasive writing genre has been the required genre in
recent years, however, in 2015, the genre will not be specified prior to the
tests. Students may be required to write a persuasive, narrative or
information text.

Senior Schooling —Ms Kim Herholdt
Certificate I Construction 2015 to be delivered
by Construction Skills Training Centre, at Wellington
Point State High School, is open for expressions of
interest. The course runs for one semester, one day a
week, and is available to Year 11 and 12 students in
semester 1 2015, and to students from Years 10, 11
and 12 in semester 2 2015. If your student is interested
in participating, please see Ms Arthars in Senior
Schooling or ring 38204 265.

Receiving your Year 12 results
Year 12 students will receive their Senior Education
Profile (SEP) from the Queensland Curriculum and
Assessment Authority (QCAA) in the mail from
Monday 22 December 2014. The Senior Education
Profile will be made up of one or more of the
following documents (depending on your eligibility).
 Queensland Certificate of Education
 Tertiary Entrance Statement (OP and FPs)
 Senior Statement
 Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement.
All results contributing to the Queensland Certificate
of Education and OPs and FPs will be available in your
Learning Account on the Student Connect website at
https://studentconnect.qsa.qld.edu.au from 9am on
Saturday 20 December 2014. You need your Learner
Unique Identifier (LUI) and password (initially the day
and month of birth) to log in and check your
results. You will be able to access your results more
quickly if you have previously accessed your Learning

Schoolies website
The Queensland Government has developed the

UQ College now at St Lucia campus
UQ College has relocated its programs to the
University of Queensland’s (UQ) St Lucia campus. This
College provides alternate pathways to university
study. The programs offered include:
 Tertiary Preparation Program – This currently
free program is delivered over 28 weeks and is
offered in January, May and September. It builds
confidence, helps students gain tertiary study
skills and provides a QTAC rank for entry into UQ’s
degree programs. Apply directly to UQ College
for this program. Applications are now open for
the January 2015 intake.
 Associate Degree in Business – This is a 16-month
program. Successful completion provides an
option to pursue entry to UQ’s B Business
Management with credit. Apply through QTAC
for this program (see p. 106 of the QTAC Guide).

Mathematics B, Chemistry and Biology bridging
programs – These intensive, full-fee courses are
offered from 25 November – 20 December
2014. Applications are now open. Successful
completion will meet the subject prerequisites in
these subjects for UQ degrees. Results will be
available in time to be used in the QTAC January
2015 major offer round.

Mater Education Open Day
Mater Education offers a number of health science
related courses, including the Diploma of
Nursing. Mater will hold an open day for interested
future students from 3.30 – 6pm on Wednesday 29

Applications for the
Diploma Nursing February 2015 intake are now open
and will close on 14 November 2014.
QTAC offer rounds November 2014 –
February 2015
QTAC offers places in courses on specific dates. These
are called ‘Offer rounds’. The offer round dates
between November 2014 and February 2015 are:




27 November 2014 - Early offer round – offers
may be made for some courses that have their
major offer round on 15 January 2015. The offers
will be made to applicants who have met the
entry requirements (e.g. subject prerequisites)
and already have a qualification (e.g. AMEB
seventh or eighth grade; previous tertiary study)
11 December 2014 - Major offer round for many
Semester 1 2015 creative and performing arts
courses. See page 6 of the QTAC Guide for a list of
courses offered at this time
15 January 2015 - Major offer round for most
Semester 1 2015 courses
5 February 2015 – Subsequent offer round for
Semester 1 2015 courses with vacancies.
QTAC Q & As
Q. I applied for a university course that requires an
audition but did not do the audition. Will I still be
considered for entry to this course?
A. No.

Q. My OP estimate is currently 10 – 12. The ‘foot-inthe-door’ courses on my QTAC application have
previous cut-offs of OP 11. Is this a good enough
safety net?
A. No. It is advisable to select ‘foot-in-thedoor’ courses (i.e. your fifth and sixth
preferences) that have been cutting off at
least four OP points below your estimated
OP to provide you with a really good
safety net (especially for your sixth
preference).
Q.
I applied to QTAC before the 30 September
2014. I chose BPay as my payment option but
have not yet paid the $35 application fee. Is this a
problem?
A. Depends on how rich you are, as you now
have to pay a late fee of $130. If you
never pay it, your application will not be
processed by QTAC and you will not
receive an offer of a course place.
QTAC’s Current Applicant online service
Once you have applied to QTAC, you can use this
service to re-enter your application to:
 Change preferences

Food allergies occur in around 1 in 20
children and approximately 1 in 100
adults. That’s approximately 65,000
Australian children and 96,000 adults.
Food intolerance is even more
common with surveys indicating that
up to 25 per cent of the population
believe they have some sort of food
intolerance.
Why does it happen?
 Wheat and other cereal grains,
dairy and soy products and
other plant foods contain
proteins with related structural
elements that cannot be broken
down by our digestive system
and these structures sensitise
the person’s immune system
causing the symptoms
of
allergy and food intolerance.
Relief is at hand!
Biohawk, led by Professor Cliff
Hawkins, has discovered the way to
breakdown these proteins using a
special blend of natural gingers.
Professor Hawkins will be presenting
an information session on this topic
at the Brisbane Convention and
Exhibition Centre on Wednesday 26th
November 10am-12pm. This is a
FREE event, hosted by Malouf
Pharmacies.

Health News
Immunisations
The final round of Immunisations will be done on Monday 3 rd of November at
9am.
Year 8 students and year 10 boys will receive their final HPV shot. This applies
only to students who have had their previous shots at school as only those
records will be available.
Please see information re free clinics for anyone who wishes to have
immunisations done elsewhere.
Japanese News— Mr Ken Harding
Term 4 is now well underway and it has been wonderful to see the dedication and hard work of
our students come to fruition.
Last term many of our students sat the Assessment of Language Competence Exam issued by the
Australian Council of Educational Research. We are extremely proud of our students’
achievements and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them on their results. All
students who participated received a nationally recognized certificate to acknowledge their
abilities, an important skill within our globalized community.
Since the start of May a team of talented artists
studying Japanese has been hard at work
creating a short film for the Video Matsuri, a
national short film competition held by the
Japan Foundation for any student studying
Japanese in Australia. The requirements of the
competition are simple; the film must be
shorter than 3 minutes, filmed in Japanese, and
somewhere in the film there has to be an apple.
Slice of Life – winner of the 2014 “Most Thoughtful Scenario” award
The Video Matsuri students’ journey involved exploring what makes a short film successful,
scripting and storyboarding and finally animating and editing a film. Throughout Term 2 and
Term 3 students went into production and although cutting it close, were able to complete their
work titled Slice of Life.

I am proud to
announce that Slice of Life has won the award for Most Thoughtful Scenario! To win such an
award in a national competition with one of the highest submission numbers in the
competition’s history is not only a feat, but also proof that hard work and determination will
allow anyone to achieve great things. Congratulations to all students involved.

Chappy Update —Mr Carl Coertzwen
The end of the year is in sight
and our Year 12 students are
nearing the end of 12 years of
schooling, standing at the
beginning of a new season in
their lives. I want to wish you
all the best for your future
and want to encourage you to
always pursue your dreams.
40 Hour Famine
This year almost 40 students participated in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine
fundraiser. The focus country was Rwanda and students gave up food,
technology, comfort and many other creative things to fundraise for this
worthy cause. Our students raised $2600, which is just fantastic. To put this
into perspective, this is enough to support six families of six for a whole year. I
want to thank all the students for this great effort.

Christmas and a season of
celebration and hope, may we
remember
those
less
fortunate in our community
and may we continue to
support them in action giving
true meaning to Christmas as
a season of hope.

Rotary Club supports Chaplaincy
The Rotary Club of Wellington Point has been a longstanding
supporter of the Chaplaincy service in our school. Recently,
they selected three charities to support after the Redlands
Classic Ride and our Chaplaincy service was one of them.
They generously donated $2170 which is a clear
commitment from the local Rotarians towards the wellbeing of our students. I am so thankful for this generous
donation and I look forward to continuing to build on the
strong relationship we have.

Masters Hardware BBQ
On Saturday the 29th of November, the Chaplaincy Committee is having a BBQ fundraiser at Masters Hardware
in Tingalpa. Please come along and support us on the day.
Chaplaincy Red Day Fund Raiser
The students on the Chaplaincy Committee ran a Red Day fundraiser this term. Thanks to the hard work and
dedication of the students, we raised $1100 on the day towards Chaplaincy.

Christmas Hamper Appeal
Chaplaincy with the support of the Year 11
cohort is doing a Christmas Hamper Appeal to
bless families in our school community this
Christmas. You are welcome to donate towards this worthy cause by sending nonperishable food items to the school in the
next three weeks.

GUESTS Program
Through the Griffith University Early Start to Tertiary
Studies (GUESTS) program, high achieving students are
able to study a university subject while still at high
school. They can experience the challenge and
excitement of university life, and have the chance to
receive guaranteed entry into many Griffith University
courses.
Congratulations to Makenzie Brennan who successfully
completed the university subject Law & the Modern
State with Griffith University this year, while
completing year 12. Her efforts have been rewarded
with guaranteed admission into the Bachelor of Law
and Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice for
2015.
START QUT
Through the Queensland University of Technology
START QUT program, high achieving students have the
opportunity to extend their studies in their final year
of school. Students get to sample university life and
trial up to two different areas of interest before
committing to further study after high school. Once
completed, students gain credit towards future
studies.
Congratulations to the following students who have
been successful with their QUT studies this year:
 Kevin Jordan – studied Mechanical and Thermal
Energy successfully in semester 1. He is also
studying Calculus of one and two variables in
semester 2.

The Griffith Connect Guaranteed Admission Scheme
grants OP eligible students, who meet the Griffith
Connect prerequisite criteria (based on Year 11 and

Real Decisions @ QUT Gardens Point
Purpose: Real Decisions is an opportunity for you to
check out QUT’s Gardens Point campus and talk face-to
-face with our academic and admissions staff about
study choices after you know your OP. Post-school and
mature-age students are also encouraged to attend.

about study costs, upgrading pathways to university,

AIAS is a new private college being run by ex-TAFE
teachers and professional engineers and business
people, aiming to fill the gap between what the TAFE
sector is currently offering and what industry needs. If
you are interested in these fields of study/work and are
considering TAFE or are worried about getting into uni
in these areas, these guys might be worth a look. I have
looked over the courses and they appear better than
TAFE in many aspects.
Don’t forget to ask about costs with respect to
whatever future study you might undertake.

Tribute to Lyn Smith
It is with very great sadness that we farewelled our dear friend and colleague, Lyn Smith on
Wednesday of last week.
Lyn and Kevin Smith volunteered for Wellington Point State High School for 22 years.
Nothing was too much trouble for this amazing couple. Some of Lyn’s contributions
included:
Covering hundreds of Library books each year
Working fulltime in the Canteen for a number of
years until 1995 when she was employed by
the P&C Association until 2012
Acting as the unpaid bookkeeper for 10 years
Producing a photo wall of memories for the
school’s 20 year Anniversary
Attending monthly P&C meetings regularly
Being actively involved in every fundraiser the
P&C ever ran
Lyn undertook every task for this school happily and enthusiastically. Her dedication,
commitment and consistent hard work over many years helped to build this school and its
community spirit.
We will miss Lyn and her beaming smile. We acknowledge her huge achievements for this
school and we mourn her passing. She will always be in our hearts and remembered as one
of Wellington Point State High School’s genuine angels. Thank you Lyn and family.

Uniform Price
There will be a uniform price rise as
of 1 November, 2014.
Uniform Shop
Our new year 7 and 8 students will be
visiting the school for an Orientation Day on
Tuesday 9 December.
The Uniform Shop will be open from 7am
until 2pm for any parents who wish to
purchase uniforms.
Uniform Shop will be open on Thursday 22
and Friday 23 January 2015 from 8am until
3pm.

Sports Awards night
We were very lucky to have one of our parents as our special guest for Sports Awards Night this year. Ms Tanya Harding is a
four time Olympic Softball player, having played 283 games for Australia at the senior level. She achieved three Olympic
bronze and one Olympic Silver medal. Nationally, she was awarded over 20 individual
honours including an unprecedented five Midge Nelson awards for Most Valuable Player
at the Open Women’s National Championships, and twice won the Softball Australia
Female Athlete of the Year award. She was a Finalist – Qld Sportswoman of the Year
(2004 & 2008) and in 2013 was inducted into the Qld Sports Hall of Fame. Ms Harding
shared some invaluable advice for our athletes, including the importance of resilience
and focusing on the process not the outcome during those crucial moments in sport.

Hospitality Happenings—Ms Jill Perry
Year 11 Hospitality students have recently had the opportunity to participate in a 3 day live in
work experience at the Mercure Resort on the Gold Coast.
Students were provided with information from department heads as well as lots of ‘hands on’
experience in many of the areas of a 4 star resort in both front and back of house.
Departments included: main kitchen, housekeeping, front office, sales and marketing,
restaurant, conference and banquets, concierge and stores. Students experienced hospitality both
as an employee and as a guest.
They worked hard, displayed initiative and enthusiasm, participated well and thoroughly enjoyed
themselves.
Congratulations students for conducting yourselves in a professional and friendly manner at all
times and for being excellent ambassadors for Wellington Point State High School.

Resort was probably a once in a life time opportunity! We all got
to learn what it’s like to work in the Hospitality Industry and
learn about the many different departments within a resort. We
definitely enjoyed this experience and would recommend this to
future students.”
Kaitlyn Foot: “The Mercure trip was such a rewarding experience
– the people were great, the food and services available were
fabulous. I highly recommend to other Hospitality students to go
on this trip as you will learn so much, make so many new friends
and learn many valuable skills.”

was a once in a lifetime opportunity. The friends I made along
the way made the experience even better.”
