Product Description
The S12700 series switches are fully programmable agile core switches designed for
next-generation campus networks. Using a full programmability architecture, the S12700 series
allows fast, flexible function customization and supports a smooth evolution to software-defined
networking (SDN). The S12700 series uses Huawei's Ethernet network processor (ENP) chip and
provides native AC functions to help build a wired and wireless converged network. It supports
Packet Conservation Algorithm for Internet (iPCA) to perform hop-by-hop monitoring of real
service flows, helping customers manage services in a more refined way. Based on Huawei
Versatile Routing Platform (VRP), the S12700 provides high Layer 2/Layer 3 switching
capabilities and integrates diversified services such as MPLS VPN, hardware IPv6, desktop cloud,
and video conferencing. In addition, the S12700 provides a variety of reliability technologies
including in-service software upgrade, non-stop forwarding, CSS2 switch fabric hardware
clustering that allows1+N backup of MPUs, hardware Eth-OAM/BFD, and ring network protection These
technologies improve customers' network efficiency and maximize the network operation time,
reducing customers' total cost of ownership (TCO).
The S12700 series are available in two models: S12708 and S12712.
Configuration Procedure
Typical procedure for configuring an S12700:
Select chassis, MPU, switching fabric, and power module -> Select service cards -> Select
special service cards -> Select software and license -> Select optical modules -> Select cluster
cables -> Other requirements -> Select auxiliaries.

Select the power module
Two types of power modules are available for S12700. 3 of the power modules can realize
full supply of the power consumption.
The power modules configure rules below:
a) If S12708/S12712 configures fabric card SFUA and meet the mode: 2<=the number of
(LPU+SFUA) <=16, it suggests that the 2 power modules be configured at least.
b) If S12708/S12712 configures fabric card SFUC/SFUD and meet the mode: 2<=the number of
(LPU+SFUA) <=8, it suggests that the 3 power modules be configured at least.

6. Select cluster cables
The S12700 supports CSS2 switch fabric hardware cluster.
EH1D2VS08000 is the CSS2 switch fabric hardware cluster subcard. It works with the CSS2
switch fabric to provide the cluster function. After the cluster subcard is selected (excluding the
cluster cables), the CSS2 switch fabric hardware cluster function can be implemented using
certain cables or fibers, for example, SFP+ cables, SFP+ optical modules, or AOC cables.

7. Other requirements
Cabinet: Huawei provides specialized AC and DC cabinets for the S12708/S12712. Each cabinet
can accommodate one S12712 or two S12708s. You can configure the cabinet according to
requirements.
8. Select auxiliary materials
1)
Fibers: To configure fibers for a non-BIDI optical module, each optical interface must be
configured with a Tx optical fiber and an Rx optical fiber of the same type. To configure fibers for
a BIDI optical module, configure only one optical fiber. If single-mode optical modules are used,
configure single-mode fibers. If multimode optical modules are used, configure multimode fibers.
You can select fibers of different lengths. Huawei provides fibers of 10 m, 20 m, and 30 m.
2) Network cables: Each network cable is configured with two RJ45 connectors (part number
14080082). The length of network cables is determined according to user requirements. The price
increases for every 1 m increase in length. The network cable (part number 25050014) is sold with
the connectors (part number 14080082).

Note:

The price of cables is included in the quotation of DC power module. By default, Huawei provides blue
(-48 V) and black (GND) cables. If the customer needs other cables, the requirement should be added to
the contract, and the cables may be purchased locally or from Huawei headquarters.

If the customer has not chosen cabinet and power distribution box, Huawei delivers a 3 m AC power
cable for the AC power module. The power cable model is selected by Huawei according to standards in
the corresponding country.
