APPROBATION
Students that earned Approbation or Approbation with Distinction last school year (2013-2014) for Term 4 and/or for the whole year
can pick up their Approbation or Approbation with Distinction cards in room 105 before or after school. (LJ)
UNICEF CLUB
Would you like to wish someone a happy thanksgiving? Are you thankful for someone? Well, now you can. BLS Unicef will be selling
Thanksgiving Treats this week. We will be selling packets of chocolate chip cookies as well as slices of apple and pumpkin pie, each for $1.
If you would like to order some treats, come to homeroom 132 before 7:40 am, find the person in the UNICEF shirt during third lunch, or
find an officer and/or member outside room 131 after school. The last day to buy a treat is this Friday, November 21. The treats will be
delivered in homeroom on Wednesday, November 26. Contact Leila Erbay in homeroom 103 or Eliza Lin in homeroom 132 for more
questions.
Volunteers Needed!
BLS Gridiron Club is looking for volunteers to help out at concessions on Thanksgiving Day as BLS faces English High at Harvard
Stadium. Any help would be appreciated by students and parents….we will be there from 8am to about 1pm. Whatever time you
could give us would be great….community service hours are available to students! Come enjoy the game and cheer on the

CHINESE EXCHANGE STUDENTS
The new application for families interested in hosting Chinese exchange students in late January 2015 is now available from Mr. D.
Smith, room 330. The deadline is soon, so please get your applications NOW!
RECYCLING ZONE CAPTAINS STARTED MONDAY!
During lunch, zone captains will be positioned near waste stations to help students recycle properly. Zone captains will be wearing
lanyards for identification and will be given priority in the lunch lines. Please be cooperative and see Mr. Hamilton with questions.
BIOLOGY CLUB
How do you miss a gorilla in the lung? Come to the first ever BLS Speaker Series event to find out. On Monday December
1st at 2:30 in the Seevak Room the Biology Club will be hosting Dr. Jeremy Wolfe, the head of the Visual Attention Lab at
Brigham and Women’s hospital. Dr. Wolfe will be talking about image perception and its medical impacts.
Come participate in an interactive discussion based talk. See live demonstrations of the cool optical illusions. Learn about how our
perception works and how we really are able to “miss a gorilla in the lung”. Any student who comes to the event will be entered into
a raffle for a $15 CVS gift card. Both students and faculty are invited to participate in the talk.

BLS AUCTION
A reminder from Home and School that there are just seven days left to register for the home and school fall auction fundraiser as
well as purchase raffle tickets for – front row seats a t graduation, senior and junior prom packages and Head Master for the day for a
BLS student. Raffle tickets are $10 each. Drawing will be held the night of the auction. One set of graduation tickets is reserved for
live auction. The auction supports the three initiatives of Home and School which include: Head Master’s Discretionary Fund,
Scholarship Fund and the General H&S Fund which includes support to students in need. In addition, a portion of the revenue will
be allocated to the Liberal Arts Foundations at BLS
The auction will be held Friday 11/21/14 7:00-11:00 PM at the Seaport East Winter Garden Atrium (2 Seaport Lane). Tickets are
$50. You can access the registration and raffle forms on the BLS website http://www.bls.org/homeandschool . You can pay by
credit card by contacting Ginny directly- [email protected] Registration deadline is November 19th. Directions will be posted
on the BLS website Home and School page.

The "Southie Shuttle" that operates within the South Boston & Seaport District will be available to get you there and back at no
charge.
Christopher Herren, Guest Speaker for Class V and Class III Assemblies
On Tuesday, November 25, Boston College Graduate and former Boston Celtics player Christopher Herren will speak to Class V and
Class III about his experience with substance abuse. The Class V Assembly is scheduled for R1 and the Class III Assembly is
scheduled for R3. Masters must remain with their classes during the assembly. If the Masters of Class II would like to bring their
classes, you must inform Ms. Webb by Monday, November 24. Space is limited.
Monday, Nov. 24 (the Monday before Thanksgiving) Ms. Kilbourn will be showing her slide show from her sabbatical travels
last year through Southeast Asia and New Zealand. The show itself is 40 min. long with questions and discussion afterwards.
The countries visited were Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia and New Zealand (the South Island only). 11/24 in
the Seevak room starting at 2:30.
CANNED FOOD DRIVE
Wolfpack Volunteers will be holding its 11th Annual Canned Food Drive from now until Monday November 24th. Last year,
Wolfpack Volunteers raised 1500 pounds of canned food, and our goal this year is to raise 2000 pounds of food. We
encourage students to bring in any canned or dry foods, and there will be drop off boxes in front of the Main Office. All
donations go directly to Rosie’s Place to feed women and children in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Thank you!
Notice to Masters
Meeting for Faculty New to BLS- November 22
The last formal meeting for faculty new to BLS will be held on Tuesday, November 22 from 2:30-3:30 in the Keefe Library. Deeth
Ellis, Head Librarian, will be present on the numerous resources available to support teaching and learning. MB
New Copy Machine in service
On December 2, 2014 a representative from RICOH will be in the mailroom next to the main office from 9:00-11:00 am to go over
the features of the new machine and answer any questions you may have about how the new copy machines work. Please feel free to
stop by if you are able. (Ms. Folan)
Notice to Students
BASKETBALL
3 on 3 Basketball Tournament - Thursday Nov 20 / 2:45 – 4:30
Rules and Regulations
Each team is allowed up to 5 players per team. Upper Division – grades 9 -12
Lower Division – grade 7-9. The tournament is double elimination. Teams are
encouraged to wear same color shirts. Each game is played to 11 points or 15 minutes.
Good sportsmanship expected or prompt ejection from Tournament. $20 per team of 3 or 4 / $25 per team of 5. All forms to be
handed in ASAP to Coach Smith or the PE Office.
SECOND PUBLIC DECLAMATION
Second Public Declamation try-outs are Monday, November 24, the Monday before Thanksgiving break.
Members of all classes are invited to try out. Submit a copy of your piece for review by Friday, November 21 to Ms Holm in Room
120. Exempt seniors must submit pieces by try-out day, Monday, November 24. Public Declamation will take place on Tuesday,
December 2, 2014. See Ms Holm for additional information or coaching. (HW)
Strengths Based Leadership Seminar
The PIC (Ms. Delorme) and DLI (Mr. Levesque) are launching an interactive, project-based Leadership Workshop
Series. 4 workshops total, all required attendance. Next session will be in December (12/02, 12/04, 12/08, 12/19).
Seevak Room, 2:30-3:30pm. Classes I-III.
Students receive 1) personalized report of their leadership strengths according to Clifton StrengthsFinder ®, 2) "top
of the pile" applicant status if applying to 2015 Ward or Deitch Fellowships, 3) Certificate of Completion for college
applications.

The Strategies for Success workshops are back!
All sessions will be held in the Seevak Conference Room from 2:30-3:30pm;
Time Management / Organizational Skills:
Grades 9-12 – Thursday, November 20th
Learn how to enhance your understanding of the material, while taking efficient notes that will be helpful when studying for exams.
The workshops are open to all students and will be held in the Seevak Conference Room on the third floor from 2:30pm – 3:30pm.
