2014 Our Lady and St Patrick’s College
Careers Convention
Date: Thursday 20th November 2014
Time: 7.30-9.30pm
Location: Sports Hall, College Hall
and Drama Studio
Welcome to our 2014 Careers Convention
I would like to personally welcome each of you to our 2014 Careers Convention.
It’s an exciting time for the Careers Department as we continue to grow and adapt, at all
times remaining motivated and responsive to the needs and interests of our students.
This event aims to provide students and parents with the opportunity to obtain valuable,
current information on further training, study and possible career choices here in Northern
Ireland or further afield. Great care has been taken in ensuring we have a diverse range of
employers and further and higher education establishments represented at this year’s
Careers Convention.
School staff and business partners have continued to meet the challenges of providing
effective and up-to-date careers advice and information to students across all year groups.
Whilst we are aware that this Convention may not provide all the answers, it should help
enlighten students and empower them to make sense of what the future may hold for them.
I hope that you find the Convention both enjoyable and informative. I would like to thank
each of you for attending this year’s event, but may I also extend my thanks to all of the
exhibitors present here this evening for taking time out of their busy schedules to support
the Careers Department at the school. We could not accomplish what we do without your
support.

Top Tips and Sample Questions
Careful planning and preparation in advance of the event are important.
 Decide on 3 or 4 career areas that interest you, taking your academic ability, aptitudes
(things you are good at) and interests into account.
 If you have already decided on the specific career area that interests you, it would be
advisable to investigate other career areas that are in some ways similar.
 When you have decided which exhibitors to visit, make a written or mental note of the
specific questions that you intend to ask, and use this programme to find out exactly
where their stand is located.
Please see below for a list of sample questions:
1.
What GCSE / A Level subjects did you study at school?
2.
Did you stay in school until Year 14?
3.
Do you need a degree to do your job?
4.
Did you have any work experience before you got your job?
5.
What qualities / skills are important in your job?
6.
What does a typical day involve?
7.
When did you know what career you wanted?
8.
Do you have any advice for someone interested in pursuing this career?
9.
What is the best / worst thing about your job?
10.
What advice would you give a 14 year old choosing their GCSEs?
11.
Would you still do your job if you won the lottery?
 If you have any time left, stroll around the remaining stands. Don’t be afraid to listen to
any adviser speaking to someone else because what you hear may be relevant and
important to your career plans.
 Many of the exhibitors will have leaflets, which you can take but only take leaflets
relevant to the career area you are investigating.
