INTRODUCTION
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is pleased to present this year’s symposium, which is designed to meet the needs of our diverse membership, from the beginning practitioner to the seasoned one. Various styles of acupuncture will be presented in
lecture and workshop format, with emphasis on evidence-based research and effective
clinical protocols. We will examine current scientific research in the field of medical
acupuncture. This meeting addresses topics suggested by practitioners and stresses
many different approaches for addressing practical clinical problems. Surveys and evaluations from previous symposia indicate that there is a desire for more information about
acupuncture techniques that honor the rich history of Asian medicine as applied to the
contemporary, Western medical practice.
The various traditions and techniques presented will include: Five Element Acupuncture,
Korean Constitutional Acupuncture, Neuroanatomical Acupuncture and Acupuncture Related Techniques (ART), such as neural therapy, cupping, prolotherapy. Other specific
areas to be presented are Microsystem, including Battlefield Acupuncture, Oncology
Acupuncture, Integrative Cancer and Palliative Care, Acupuncture Research Strategies,
Pediatric Acupuncture, Pulse Diagnosis, Classical Chinese Approaches (Neijing Acupuncture) and Practice Management.
This conference will offer a multi-tiered, integrative and clinically relevant approach for
the understanding of acupuncture and its use in daily practice. It will expand our awareness of scientific research into the effects of acupuncture, and provide participants with
information about different approaches for the treatment of common conditions seen in
clinical practice. Clinicians will learn multi-faceted ways to tailor acupuncture treatments
for their individual patients. This conference will focus on clinically relevant treatment approaches that can easily be integrated into clinical practice.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The Symposium is designed for instruction and training of health care professionals
interested in or already practicing acupuncture. Medical practitioners with no experience and those with extensive background in medical acupuncture will find the program
useful in their medical practices.
The Pre-Symposium workshops are intended to provide a more concentrated learning
experience where the faculty can spend the entire day focused on a topic in greater
depth and with more time for practical examples from clinical experiences.

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is accredited by the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for
physicians.

PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP III
Five Element Acupuncture: Blocks to Healing, Causative
Factor, and Diagnostic Correspondences
Workshop presented by Neil Gumenick, MAc (UK),
LAc, Dipl Ac. The presence of specific energetic blocks
will prevent any treatment from being effective and, in
some cases, are themselves fatal conditions. Workshop
participants will learn the protocols for identifying and
effectively removing these blocks. Once any and all
blocks have been removed, in Five Element Acupuncture, the focus is the identification and treatment of the
elemental "Causative Factor" of disease.
All humans are born with, or develop early in life, a primary imbalance in one of the Five Elements: Wood, Fire,
Earth, Metal, or Water. This element, with its associated
organs and functions, becomes a pivotal source of the
myriad physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual symptoms a person develops over a lifetime. Once the Causative Factor is identified and properly treated, unless the
condition is truly beyond the reach of Nature to reverse,
Nature will resolve the disease.
Participants will also learn the four essential diagnostic
correspondences of each element used to identify the
Causative Factor – via lecture, and in practice by watching actual patient video interviews. Participants will experience the next best thing to a day of live clinical
observation: seeing a variety of patients – before and
after treatment, with discussion as to the diagnosis,
pulses, and points selected – including the rationale for
each point, the order of points in the treatment plan, and
the use of points for their spiritual connotations.
Oncology Acupuncture: From Clinical Trials to
Everyday Practice
Workshop presented by Weidong Lu, PhD, LAc.
Increasing research evidence in acupuncture for cancer
care has prompted more cancer patients seeking
acupuncture treatment. However, clinicians are often illequipped with limited knowledge and skills to effectively
apply acupuncture in an oncologic setting with confidence. We will present the latest development in clinical
research pertaining to oncology acupuncture. Every
attempt will be made to translate clinical trials into practical tips based upon our 14-years experience at DanaFarber Cancer Institute.
We will not only articulate specific acupuncture techniques and newly developed protocols, but also specific
clinical pathways for major cancers at each phase of cancer care: active treatment, maintenance phase, and survivorship. We will also identify risks and contraindicacations of using acupuncture in cancer patients. Learners
will gain a set of knowledge and skills needed to successfully apply oncology acupuncture for cancer care in a
hospital setting or private practice. The workshop is suitable for medical professionals who already have a general knowledge and skills of acupuncture.

Korean Constitutional Acupuncture:
History, Theory, and Practice
Workshop presented by Peter Eckman, MD. The workshop will cover the essential teachings of a style of
acupuncture first developed in the 1960s by Kuon
Dowon, which is not well known outside of Korea, but
has radically changed the conceptual basis of many
Asian practitioners. KCA integrates the Four Images
(Sasang) herbal theory of Lee Je-ma, the (expanded)
Four Needle Technique of Sa Am, and the Splanchnic
Inter-relational theory of Dr. Hans Selye, thereby integrating Western medical concepts with both Five Element and Yin Yang theories of Eastern medicine.
The historical basis of these components will be presented, along with the diagnostic and therapeutic skills
necessary to begin applying this methodology in the
clinic. Practical demonstrations of the pulse diagnostic
assessment, and a thorough review of the (expanded)
Four Needle Technique, will provide a basis for understanding and applying Kuon Dowon’s seminal publications on this topic. This material has largely been
unavailable in English before, and the speaker is one of
only a couple of English speaking practitioners to have
personally studied in Kuon’s clinic.
KCA diagnosis also provides an empirically derived set
of individualized dietary guidelines that can markedly enhance treatment efficacy, and which will be taught in the
workshop. As the pulse diagnosis methodology of KCA
is different from Chinese approaches, no prior expertise
in pulse examination is required to learn and use this
material.
Learning Objectives – At the end of this workshop,
attendees will be able to...
• Apply a very simple system of Great Pole Acupuncture
for any condition after learning the basic theory of Lee
Je-ma's Four Images Constitutional Medicine.
• Understand the Eight Constitutional types of Kuon
Dowon, and the nature of each according to the Excess
and Deficiency of their Organs.
• Properly take Constitutional pulses for diagnosing the
Eight Types.

attendees will be able to...
• Identify recent clinical trials of oncology acupuncture
and their clinical applications.
• Recognize risk factors associated with practice of
oncology acupuncture.
• Recognize side effects and toxicities of major cancer
therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation

management towards major cancers.

Acupuncture Related Techniques:
Is There More?
Workshop presented by Bryan L. Frank, MD, FAAMA.
Beyond acupuncture, multiple Acupuncture Related Techniques (ART) have been recognized for decades or millennia as significant therapeutics. Many times these ART
provide enhanced response to acupuncture, or may be
used alone. ART have traditionally included Neural Therapy, Cupping, Gwa Sha (scraping), Auricular Therapy and
other techniques. Prolotherapy is an important acupuncture-related technique largely unknown and unpracticed
globally by many medical acupuncture practitioners, even
though it has been taught and practiced in the USA for
over 50 years.
This workshop will introduce Prolotherapy, Neural
Therapy, Cupping, Gwa Sha, acupuncture micro-systems
and other ART as potent, viable acupuncture-related
techniques and to encourage their integration within
medical acupuncture practices. The method presented is
a review of the principals of various ART (Acupuncture
Related Techniques) for healing and tissue repair, especially where acupuncture alone has failed. This workshop
will include practical clinical presentations on audience
participants.
ART techniques may be well understood within the
framework of biomedicine as well as acupuncture
physiology. Clinical patient recovery is enhanced with
the addition of ART to the therapeutic regimen in many
conditions.

• Become acquainted with the patho-physiology of musculoskeletal injury and repair through Prolotherapy.
• Become acquainted with the physical medicine properties, benefits and techniques of cupping and scraping.

CANCELLATIONS
Requests for refunds must be in writing
and received at the Academy’s office by
April 17, 2015. There will be a $75 handling fee assessed for all cancellations.

TUITION
Tuition includes refreshment breaks,
lunch on Friday and Sunday and the
Saturday afternoon Wine and Cheese

In a commitment to make a better impact on the environment, the Academy
Board has arranged to have the Syllabus available in disk format —
CD/DVD as well as available to download in advance of the meeting. If you
prefer to have the Syllabus in the
printed book format, you must choose
that option on the registration form and
pay a nominal fee for the printed version. We will base the number of copies
we print on the number of requests and
pay for printed copies. You must make
a choice. If you make no selection, the
default option is Disk which is what you
will receive on-site at the meeting. At
the meeting, any available print or disk
versions will be available for purchase
while supplies last.
EXHIBITS
Each year time is set aside during the
Symposium for attending physicians to
meet with suppliers to the medical profession, particularly practicing physician
acupuncturists.
POSTER PRESENTATIONS
The Academy provides a Poster Presentation opportunity for members to present interesting clinical cases or clinical
research. Poster Presenters are eligible
for cash prizes for the best poster presentations. For information on this opportunity and the requirements for

RESEARCH PAPER COMPETITION
The Academy sponsors a Research
Paper Competition in conjunction with
the Symposium. A session is scheduled
for Sunday morning where the winning
papers will be announced and where the
First Place paper will be presented. For

BOARD CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION
SUNDAY, APRIL 26, 2015

Offered by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture. Available only for
those who have applied for Board Certification and have been found "Board Eligible.” Separate reservation is required.

CELEBRATORY DINNER
Join us Friday evening, April 24th, as
we celebrate with old and new friends,
dinner, dancing and more. We will recognize new Fellows and Symposium
Award recipients and the Symposium
Faculty.
