Architect’s renderings unveiled
for Ashtabula Library addition
Why we need an addition to the
Ashtabula Library
While the details are still being finalized, the firm of
Ziska Architecture has given the ACDL Board their renderings of the addition, with 95% of the work being completed on the design.
When people ask why the Ashtabula Library needs
more space and wants to build an addition, a few
photos explain perfectly.
Groundbreaking is expected in Spring 2015, with a tentative completion date of Spring 2016.
Overall costs will not exceed $5.2 million, and will include needed renovations at the Geneva Library, as well.

Ashtabula’s Third Mondays author series: award-winning authors
An Agatha-nominated Best First Novel mystery writer for her first book, Maid of Murder, author Amanda Flower
cemented her future writing career in elementary school. She read her first-person account of
being stuck at the top of a Ferris wheel to her fellow sixth grade classmates and had them
howling about her escapades. She knew writing was what she wanted and had to do as a career.
Today, she serves an academic librarian at Ursuline College in Pepper Pike and writes cozy
mysteries - stories about Amish country events. She also writes under the pen name Isabella
Allen. Flower has written several series: The Appleseed Creek Mystery Series; The Andi Boggs Novels;
and under her pen name, Isabella Alan, The Amish Quilt Shop Mystery Series. Ms. Flower will
have books for sale at her program. Monday, November 17, 2014.
Author and Case Western Reserve professor Brad Ricca has written the very first, though unauthorized, literary
style biography of the birth of Superman and the lives of the Man of Steel’s teenage creators.
Super Boys: The Amazing Adventures of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster–the Creators of Superman is the winner of the 2014 Ohioanan Book Award for Nonfiction and made the Top 10 Book on the Arts
for 2013 by Booklist. Mr. Ricca’s book of poetry, American Mastodon won the St. Lawrence
Book Award for Poetry and was featured on A Writer’s Almanac with Garrison Keillor. His
first documentary film, Last Son, won a Silver Ace Award at the Las Vegas International Film
Festival. Mr. Ricca serves as the Vice-President of the Siegel and Shuster Foundation, a Cleveland area non-profit organization that raises scholarship funding for talented young writers and
artists. Mr. Ricca will have books for sale. Monday, December 15, 2014.
Mary Ellis grew up near an Amish community and loved their peaceful lifestyle and strong sense of Christian
community. She and her husband now live by the largest population of Old Order in the country where they take weekend trips to research her books. Mary enjoys reading, traveling, gardening, bicycling and swimming. Before “retiring” to write full-time, Mary taught Middle
School and worked as a sales rep for Hershey Chocolate—a job with amazingly sweet fringe
benefits. Her debut Amish fiction, A Widow’s Hope, first in the Miller Family series, was a finalist in the 2010 ACFW Carol Awards and received the Award of Merit for the Holt Medallion.
She has since written ten best-selling novels. Her previous release, Living in Harmony, first in the
New Beginning series, won the 2012 Lime Award for Excellence in Amish Fiction.

The first light snow of the season was predicted for the early hours of Saturday, November 1! Time to pull out
the sweaters and blankets, cocoa mugs, and curl up with a book or movie or check out a few craft books to plan
your gift giving. We have many programs that may entice you!

Calling all teens! We want your ideas for after-school activities and programs that you would like. Pizza and pop

Get some mother-daughter relaxing time in before the holiday rush begins. Members of the Ashtabula Multicultural Festival will be on hand to help you and your little one. We'll have masks, facials, and mini-manicures

Celebrate the holiday with stories, games, crafts, and snacks. This will be held in place of the Tuesday evening

Caroling in the Geneva Library Gazebo
This is a starlight, rain, or snow event, so dress accordingly and bring your heartiest voices! We’ll be
singing all those traditional tunes you love. Bring a lawn chair and a flashlight, if you’d like. Warm up
with some hot chocolate, cookies, fellowship, and fun! Tuesday, December 16, 6:30p.m.
The Friends of the Geneva Library Bake Sale
The Friends are holding an Election Day bake sale beginning at 7:00a.m. on Tuesday, November 4 and continuing until all of the goodies are sold. The group also will meet at 6:00p.m. that evening at the Geneva Library.

Holiday Bingo at the Geneva Library
Bring the kids to this long-standing library holiday tradition for an evening of fun. All of the squares
