LOCAL SCHOOL WELLNESS POLICY
The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System will comply with Section 204 of Public Law
108-265 by establishing a local school wellness policy, which will support student achievement
and 100% graduation goals by encouraging student and staff wellness.

COORDINATED SCHOOL HEALTH
The mission of the Coordinated School Health program is to improve students’ health and their
capacity to learn through the support of families, communities and schools.
The office of CSH will:
(1) establish and maintain state and local partnerships necessary to implement the CSH mode.
(2) create awareness about the importance of students’ health and wellness to their academic
success and prospects for future work.
(3) maximize the ability of each school community to adopt and implement the CSH model by
providing resources, materials and technical assistance to meet the needs of that school
community.
(4) promote a healthy school environment in all CMCSS schools.
(5) provide annual evaluation and needs assessment for monitoring CSH in each school
community.

HEALTH EDUCATION
The schools will provide State Department of Education adopted health education that is a
planned, sequential curriculum that addresses the physical, mental and emotional, and social
dimensions of health.

COUNSELING, PSYCHOLOGICAL & SOCIAL SERVICES
The district will provide counseling, psychological and social services as appropriate.
The district will provide violence and suicide prevention training.
The district will develop and use approved crisis intervention plans.
Qualified professionals such as school and community counselors, school and community
psychologists, school health nurses, social workers, and qualified staff from community agencies
provide services that contribute to the mental, emotional, and social health of students, their
families and the school environment.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & OTHER PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OPPORTUNITIES
The schools will provide State Department of Education adopted Physical Education that is a
planned, sequential curriculum program that follows national standards in providing
developmentally appropriate, cognitive content and learning experiences in a variety of physical
activity areas such as basic movement skills; physical fitness; rhythm and dance; cooperative
games; team, dual, and individual sports; tumbling and gymnastics.
The schools will provide State Department of Education adopted Lifetime Wellness Education
that is a planned, sequential curriculum program that addresses Nutrition, Substance Use and
Abuse, Mental Health, Family Life and Sexuality, First Aid and Safety, and Personal Fitness and
Related Skills.
The schools will provide approved appropriate physical activity programs (i.e. recess, physical
education).

NUTRITION SERVICES/CHILD NUTRITION
The primary goal of child nutrition is to provide nutritious meals.
Students in grades Pre-K-12 are offered nutritious meals in all the cafeterias on a daily basis.
Students, parents and community leaders are informed of the healthy choice options available in
the schools.
The Child Nutrition Director or representative provides information at Kindergarten Round Ups to
answer questions in regard to the child nutrition program of Montgomery County.
A Principal’s Advisory Committee has been created to assist the department in achieving its
organizational goals.
The cafeteria is available for use as a learning laboratory for students.
Nutrition Education Groups may be formed in an effort to assist in education of students and
provide support to the community.
Beginning 2009-2010, menu options will state “Healthy Choice” options.
The Child Nutrition Department provides resource materials to assist nurses with individual issues
such as carbohydrate counts, nutritional analysis, etc.
The Child Nutrition Department provides classroom instruction for students Pre-K - 12.
The Child Nutrition Department provides information on menus, such as the website bulletin
boards, encouraging healthy eating.
Nutrition education is offered in the school cafeterias through visuals and by staff members
participating in the classroom training activities.

The primary goal of Nutrition Education is to influence students eating behaviors.
The Child Nutrition Department is involved with multiple community wellness agencies through its’
participation in TNCEP.
Students are provided a variety of healthy options to select from daily.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are offered daily as well as canned fruit choices with natural fruit
juices.
Water is available for students to purchase daily in the cafeterias.
Whole grain cereal options with reduced sugar are added to menu choices.
Nutrition education activities are encouraged at all grade levels with an emphasis on parental
involvement.
Brochures are provided to each student explaining about the Child Nutrition program in the school
system and providing contact information about its operation.
Vegetarian options will be available in all schools.
School Nutrition Activities are showcased on the Child Nutrition Department Link: of cmcss.net.

HEALTHY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
Healthy school environment concerns the quality of the physical and aesthetic surroundings; the
psychosocial climate, safety, and culture of the school; the school safety and emergency plans;
and the periodic review and testing of the factors and conditions that influence the environment.
The schools will have established School Safety Committees as part of their efforts to prevent
unintentional injuries.

HEALTH PROMOTION FOR STAFF
Health promotion for staff includes opportunities for school staff to improve their health status
through activities such as health assessments, health education and health-related fitness
activities.
The schools will promote staff wellness programs when available and where appropriate.
