“Beastly Battle” by Jan Martin McGuire – Fighting Hippos – Jan has traveled to Africa $1,100
coming up to 18 times, and has seen hippos “fighting” at various times. On this
particular trip, she has never seen anything like what she saw in Namibia. The water
was very low and the herd of bulls with their harems had all the good spots. About 100
bachelor bulls were forced into an uneasy alliance where two rivers come together. The
hippos were not acclimated to humans and when they would drive up on the
embankment, it would cause them to get “riled up” and then the testosterone started
flowing. The hippos started fighting all around. On the opposite embankment, in the
water and as shown in the painting, on the sandbar. Jan was particularly struck by the
eye of the one bull and made that the “focus” of the painting.

“Wild Bunch” by James Gary Hines II – Mustangs must be removed from BLM land on $1,100
a regular basis. There are not enough natural predators to keep their numbers in check.
Many are auctioned off to the public as riding horses, but some are so old or not “pretty”
enough and so those are sent to ranches around the country that will care for them.
This photo was taken at the Prairie Wild Horse Reserve in Oklahoma, not far from where
James and Jan live. They spent several days out there getting to know the horses and

their habitat. James and Jan went out the day before the rotation of the pastures to
figure out the time and lighting – then hid behind a tree as the rancher opened the gate
behind the hill in front of them. At first, all they could hear were the pounding hoofs –
then suddenly, there they were! Manes and dust flying – quite breathe taking!
