and talents.
The Fredericton Arts Alliance is the parent of Fredericton Arts and Learning, and is responsible for the weekly ARTSnews, the annual
fundraising A Touch of Jazz Gala, the summer Artists in Residence program, election forums on the arts, the Artists in the Schools project,
art workshops for the homeless, and much more.

2. Fredericton Arts Alliance Annual General Meeting Feb 4

The FAA Fredericton Arts Alliance welcomes everyone interested in the arts in Fredericton to come join us for our 15 Annual General
Meeting on February 4, 2015. This meeting will be held at 7pm in the Charlotte Street Art Centre Auditorium. We will discuss
upcoming projects and activities for the new year, and welcome new ideas and feedback. We invite your participation on any committees
and projects you might be interested in. Membership forms will be available. The evening provides a wonderful opportunity for artists
working in all disciplines as well as arts supporters to get together for a relaxed evening of sharing. Refreshments will be served.

6. The Capital Complex’s 10 Anniversary Christmas Cover Show Series Dec 18, 19 & 22
After more than 10 years, The Capital Complex continues to uphold the tradition of the Christmas Cover Show Series. This event brings
together local musicians working to support the Fredericton Food Bank by doing what they love - performing music. These artists, year
after year, choose the artists who have inspired them throughout their musical career, bringing that music to the stage to help raise
money for the Fredericton Food Bank. Originally a one night affair, this event has grown to three nights. It includes over 12 acts
and raised upwards of $4,000 in 2013 alone. We are proud to present the 2014 lineup:

11. Musical Candlelight Service at the Brunswick Street Baptist Church Dec 21
The music ministry of Brunswick Street Baptist Church will present their Annual Candlelight Service on Sunday, December 21 at
6:30pm. This concert of Christmas music and readings will be preceded by a mini-concert with Yvonne Kershaw (flute) and Steven Peacock
(guitar). The adult Sanctuary Choir will present selections by Holst, Rutter, and Rouse. The program will also include many sacred
Christmas melodies presented instrumentally by violin, viola, piano, and organ. The Junior Handbell Choir and Youth Choir in addition to
soloists will also contribute to the evening.
The offering from the service will be directed to the work of the Fredericton Community Kitchen. Prior to, and after the service, concert

goers may purchase copies of 200 Christmases, a cd of Christmas music released by the church's music ministry in celebration of this 200
anniversary year of Brunswick Street Baptist Church. These are also available from the church office between 9am and 4:30pm, Monday to

13. The NB Film Co-op and Charlotte Street Arts Centre present The Shortest Day 2014 Film Screening Dec 21
The Shortest Day is a three-day celebration of short films offering free screenings across the country. Started by the Centre national du
cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC) in France in 2011, the event has now spread to some 50 other countries.From Newfoundland and
Labrador to Yukon, more than 60 participating venues—movie theatres, cultural centres, associations, festivals and libraries—will join the
celebration and hold free screenings of one or several of the three thematic programs: Kids, Family, and Comedy. This is a wonderful
opportunity for audiences to discover talented Canadian filmmakers who have been honoured here and abroad on the festival circuit.
The Shortest Day: an entertaining way of welcoming the winter solstice from December 19-21! Content for this screening is Family, Rated

Fredericton-based reggae group, Dub Antenna and friends will perform as The 20 Year Strong Ensemble this New Year’s Eve to celebrate

the 30 Anniversary of Bob Marley's iconic compilation album: Legend. They will perform this album from front to back, note for note.
This will be a great way to ring in the New Year at The Fredericton Boyce Farmer's Market.
Since Dub Antenna's formation back in 2004, this project has evolved over the years as ten-piece reggae/dub outfit, creating and
performing original material while still paying tribute to some of reggae music’s most influential artists such as the late great Bob Marley.

One of the most daring and audacious filmmakers to emerge in the last decade, Ruben Östlund hit a new peak with Force Majeure, a
critical hit at this year’s Cannes Festival. As in his previous films Involuntary and Play, with his latest Östlund turns a keenly analytic eye on
those principles we supposedly live by, and explores what happens when the codes of conduct enforcing those principles are abruptly
stripped away.
On a family skiing vacation in the French Alps, married couple Tomas (Johannes Bah Kuhnke) and Ebba (Lisa Loven Kongsli) are enjoying
lunch with their two children when their meal is suddenly interrupted by thunderous booms emanating from the mountain above them.
The complacent Tomas initially dismisses the possibility of danger — but when it appears that there may be an avalanche, he grabs his cell
phone and bolts, leaving his wife and children to fend for themselves. The remainder of the film monitors the fallout from this fateful
incident, as husband and wife hotly debate what actually occurred, and what Tomas’ proper response should have been — a battle that
eventually threatens not just Tomas and Ebba’s relationship, but those of the people around them.
Both psychologically and sociologically acute, Force Majeure boasts a number of bravura moments that range from terrifying to comic —
most notably, and daringly, an indelible, extended crying jag/confession from one of the principals. While this climactic moment is on the
one hand self-serving, convoluted and shambolic, it also seems bizarrely honest. Probing that paradox with intelligence and incisiveness,
it’s little wonder that Östlund has earned comparisons to such masterful cinematic social critics as Michael Haneke and Östlund’s
countryman and mentor Roy Andersson.
This term, 12 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. The film series is open to everyone. Regular
admission is $7; Member’s admission is $4. January-April Memberships are $20 (regular), and $12 (Students/Seniors (65 years and

18. The Fredericton Choral Society Seeks New Members
The Fredericton Choral Society is a non-auditioned community choir that is directed by Heather Dunham. The choir plans to perform
Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem in April 2015. The cost per term is $40 per person, $65 per family, and $10 per student. The ability to read
music is a definite asset, but not mandatory. Singers should be able to carry a tune.

19. The Charlotte Street Arts Centre announces M. Anne Mitton as 2015 Writer-in-Residence
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre (CSAC) is thrilled to welcome treasured New Brunswick educator, writer, storyteller and performer, M.
Anne Mittonas as the CSAC Writer-in-Residence from January to March 2015.
Mitton’s career has included a lifetime of service to New Brunswick learners through her work as a teacher, consultant and literacy
specialist, as well as through multiple publications, including Inside Stories, a full anthology of short stories with Black Moss Press and the
production of her play, Bad Water by Theatre New Brunswick and Giant Step Theatre Company.
Much of Mitton's previous work has involved the use of history as a catalyst for the creative process, which beautifully resonates with the
CSAC's upcoming celebration of the history of the Charlotte Street School. During Mitton’s tenure as Writer-in-Residence, she will explore
the history of the centre, interview former Charlotte Street School students and use their living memories to create a vivid piece of
reader’s theatre. This new work will be performed by Saint Thomas University Theatre Program students, under the direction of Lisa Anne
Ross for the upcoming Alumni Tea in May 2015.
M. Anne Mitton's residency, entitled Honouring Yesterday will herald the beginning of a full year of activities and events in celebration of
the ten-year anniversary of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. The Charlotte Street Arts Centre opens the doors of creative expression to all.

1. Call For Applicants: 2015 CSAC Emerging Artist Songwriting Intensive and Showcase
The Charlotte Street Art Centre invites applications for participation in the 2015 CSAC Emerging Artist Songwriting Intensive and
Showcase with The Skydiggers.
The Songwriting Intensive is offered in partnership with Shivering Songs, sponsored by UP! 93.1FM, and will take place January 24 and 25,
2015, with a showcase on the evening of January 25. Selected participants will workshop songs-in-progress with members of The
Skydiggers and peers, preparing them for performance at the showcase event. All events will take place in the CSAC Auditorium, 732
Charlotte Street, Fredericton.
Application process opens December 1, 2014 and deadline to apply is January 1, 2015 by midnight.
Twelve musicians will be selected from the applications received and will be offered the opportunity to take the workshop free of charge.
Entry Requirements:






Must be 16+ years of age
Must be a New Brunswick resident
Must be an “emerging” musician
o You may have achieved some local or provincial success, and may have released self- or locally produced albums, but
have yet to take that next big leap
Must be able to accompany oneself on an instrument
Must have one “work-in-progress” piece of music to work on during the workshop
Must be able to attend all activities, including the final performance

2. City of Fredericton Invites Design Submissions for Public Art
The City of Fredericton is inviting New Brunswick artists to submit design concepts for public art to be located in a high profile park in the
city. The Sheila Hugh McKay Foundation awarded the City of Fredericton a Special Project Grant earlier this year in response to a proposal
to commission public art specifically for the Fredericton Botanic Garden located on the west side of Odell Park.
The selected artwork will celebrate the space and be compatible with the goals of the Fredericton Botanic Garden. The jury will be looking
for public art that enhances the experience of users and visitors of the space, including many people who enjoy the trail network
connecting Odell Park and the Botanic Gardens. The art will be installed in the summer of 2015. This initiative is compatible with the City’s
Culture Plan approved by Council in July, which calls for more art and culture in daily life.
The design competition is open to all New Brunswick artists. Submissions will be reviewed by a jury of arts professionals, members of the
City’s Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee, and a member of the garden board. The jury will review the submissions and select a
shortlist of artists to submit a fully detailed proposal.

The budget for the commission is $15,000 (HST included) plus up to $2,000 for installation costs. This is to include all expenses related to
the creation and installation of the public art piece.
Artists are asked to submit a resume/CV, a portfolio, and a rough design concept. Full details and criteria are available on the City of
Fredericton website: www.fredericton.ca (search public art). Submissions will be accepted until the end of the working day on Monday,
January 5, 2015.
