3:30 – 5:30 pm — Manhole Installation Presentations
Manhole Step Installation & Safety Training
Presented by Kelly Robertson - Lane International and Mark Ludwig – J-K Polysource
Protect your company from liability and learn about the do’s and don’ts of proper
step installation for manholes.
Although the concept of filling a form seems simple enough, the presenter will
also point out the benefits of filling forms correctly and how it will improve the
product utilizing some proven techniques. How long should the concrete in a form
be vibrated during the filling process, and is more vibration better than less? Join
us for this dynamic presentation and find out.
Tom Umek
Manhole Connector Installation
Tom’s original career plan was to be a Physical Education teacher after attending
Andrews University in Michigan. After four years of teaching, with the last two
in California, the path changed to retail and wholesale sales in the sporting goods
industry for seven years. In 1981 he turned to the construction industry where
concrete became the main portion of his work and he specialized in unusual
projects in California.
4:00 – 5:30 pm — Board of Directors Meeting
6:00 - 7:00 pm — Registration, Reception and Exhibits
7:00 – 8:00 pm — Dinner
8:00 pm – Midnight — Poker Tournament
In 1985 Tom joined the Johnson-Bateman company, a third generation concrete
pipe producer in Ontario, California, and became the Director of Operations.
During the nearly 20 years at JB his experience level grew and he became actively
involved with the American Concrete Pipe Association and soon was on the
planning committee for the Production Short Course School put on every year
by the ACPA. For nearly each of the past 16 years he has been a Task Group
Chairman for the production school.
Presented by Brian Blevins – Austin Jordan & Associates and Mark Ludwig – J-K Polysource
This presentation will discuss and provide a guide to the best installation practices
and techniques of mechanically installed manhole connectors.
Tuesday, February 10
Northwest College of Construction
All events on this day will be held at the Northwest College of Construction
7:30 – 8:00 am — Registration
8:00 am – 4:00 pm — Practical Concepts for Producing
Precast Concrete Products
Presented by Tom Umek
The ability to produce a quality concrete product is significantly improved with
experience and some technical knowledge. This presenter brings nearly 30 years of
experience and practical technical information about production concepts to this
workshop which is designed to enhance the skill levels of production workers. A
real emphasis will be put on vibration and how it affects forms, consolidation, and
the finish. There will also be live demonstrations of the effects of vibration to help
visualize how frequency and amplitude changes can make a difference. Along with
theory, some discussion will be included on vibrator maintenance that will help to
prolong the life of the vibrators which helps save money.
