From our Director
“Few delights can equal the
mere presence of one whom we
trust utterly.”
― George MacDonald
Every year about this time
the staff gets together after
work at a local restaurant for a
Holiday Party. While I do not
work on the committee, I enjoy
contributing to the party
planning in some way so I often
make centerpieces for the tables
based on the “theme” that was
chosen.
This year the
committee told me the theme
they selected was “Presents.”
Needless to say I asked for
clarification since I wasn’t sure
if they said presents or
presence?
That momentary thought
reminded me of my days as a
Long Term Care Ombudsman.
Every week I would make my
rounds to each room at the
facility where I was assigned.
My job was to chat with
residents and help resolve any
concern they may have had with
the facility or staff. For the
most part, the residents were
content. As I spent time in
various rooms, I learned quite a
bit about each personality.
Looking at how each individual
decorated their personal space
was good insight.
Two lovely individuals who shared a room
had their walls covered in pictures of their
loved ones along with crayon drawings and
homemade cards from their nieces and
nephews.
It was challenging to see what
color the room was painted since every usable
space was filled with tokens of love. While
they never appeared to have any concerns, I
often stopped in to say hello. Their humor and
positive outlook energized me – sometimes I think they did more than
I ever did for them.
Further down the hall was another beautiful woman who had a
private room. It appeared that the family had furnished the room with
the best quality furniture and décor. She spoke to me of her seven (7)
children and all that each had accomplished. Initially it appeared as
though she had not a care in the world; whatever she needed was
purchased by family. My inner voice kept telling me that there was
something I was missing so I determined to visit her each time I did
my rounds and soon realized that while I was impressed by the design
of the room, it lacked any personal touch – no photos, cards, etc. On
my next visit I made it a point to visit her room first. This time I did
not approach her as an “ombudsman” but rather as someone who just
wanted to spend some time chatting. I left my pen and notebook in my
purse and was in the moment. At one point she finally said to me,
“funny how I always had time for my seven children, but now those
seven never have time for me…” She taught me a great lesson – The
importance of being PRESENT. It was better than any class or
training I ever attended. From that day forward, I altered my routine. I
never took notes unless I received their permission and listened
attentively. I eliminated any distractions. I faced them when they spoke
to me and maintained eye contact. I acknowledged and smiled as they
told me their life stories.
Being present means “it’s not about you” – it’s about everyone and
everything but you. It’s about your relationships with others. Nothing
else really matters. Therefore, it is important to stop….hang up the

phone, log off the computer, cancel a meeting,
close the door, turn off your smart phone, iphone, droid or blackberry and spend time with
your family, your friends, your co-workers –
appreciate these individuals - they continue to
shape your life and help you grow. Just as
important, do what you can to be of service to
others - there is no greater reward in life.
Presents don’t always fit, aren’t always
appreciated and are easily forgotten. Success is
about building relationships. Your presence is so
much more valuable than your presents.
And it's the real spirit of giving.
Wishing you and those you hold dear a
Holiday Season filled with Peace, Love and
Happiness!

A chronicle of a little known event
in American history describes how, from 1854 to 1929,
the Children's Aid Society of New York City sent
orphaned city children West to free them from crime and
poverty, showing how these children lived in their new
surroundings. In all, over 200,000 children were given a
chance for a new life.
Basically upbeat, the book
emphasizes the placements that turned out well, only
hinting at the mistreatment that some children encountered
in their foster homes. There is no fee to attend, but
