Every year, Nova Scotia sends Boston a Christmas
tree.
On December 6, 1917, a French cargo ship exploded
in Halifax Harbour, destroying much of the city and
leaving 2,000 dead and levelling 1,600 homes. That
evening, the City of Boston sent a relief train carrying
food, water and medical supplies to help the survivors.

The very next year, 1918, Halifax sent Boston a Christmas tree as thanks. The tradition was revived in 1971
by the Lunenburg County Christmas Tree Producers
Association (the gift was later taken over by the Nova
Scotia Government) which continues annually to this
day. The tree is Boston’s official Christmas tree and is lit

Mapleridge Preschool
During the month of November at Mapleridge Cooperative Preschool, the students were immersed in
learning about colours, shapes and the exciting world
of dinosaurs! The children also received a keepsake tshirt and their class photos. Everyone at Mapleridge
Cooperative Preschool is looking forward to the holiday season and the excitement that this joyful time
brings. With careful guidance, our little elves are busy
creating wonderful crafts to decorate their homes
and thoughtful Christmas gifts for their parents!
HO! HO! HO! Before taking some time off with their
families, our three and four-year-old classes will each
enjoy a Christmas party. This last preschool event of
2014 will be a fun-filled event with crafts, songs, and
Christmas cheer. Santa will make a surprise visit to the
party with a special gift for each child. Mapleridge Cooperative Preschool would like to wish you all a fun,
happy and safe holiday season. We look forward to
seeing everyone again in the New Year!

Focusing on the future
As we look back on the past year we have much to be
thankful for at the Calgary Board of Education. This
fall we had more than 3,700 new students enrol in our
schools, bringing our total enrolment to 114,472 students. We are proud that we are the dynamic learning
community of choice for students from kindergarten
to adult education.
We are also proud of the results our students are
achieving. In the 2013, 14 provincial achievement
tests and diploma exams, our students continued to
outperform the province in most subjects, particularly at the excellence standard. In addition, our high
school completion rate continues to rise.
In the last year, our students have also made significant contributions to their communities, volunteering thousands of hours and raising funds for local and
global initiatives.
Looking forward to 2015 and beyond, we know we
have more work to do. Education trends are shifting as we continue to support and improve student
learning. These include shifts in how we assess and
report on student learning and how we ensure the
success of our high school students.
Our system has also been very involved in the provincial government’s curriculum redesign initiative,
which is reviewing what K-12 students learn and how
they learn it. As we continue to make these shifts, the
voices of our parents and community will continue to
play an important role.
The Canadian Museum for
Human Rights which opened in
Winnipeg in September this year is
the first national museum in Canada
to be located outside the Ottawa
region.

Cold Weather Safety
Alberta Health Services EMS responds to many cold
weather related emergencies every winter. Simple actions, such as: dressing appropriately and anticipating
sudden weather changes may help keep you warm and
safe this season.
Frostnip
•Frostnip occurs when skin is extremely cold, but not
frozen. It commonly affects the ears, nose, cheeks, fingers and toes
•Skin appears red, but also turns white when pressed. It
may also feel numb to the touch
•When treated promptly, frost-nipped skin will heal
without complication
•Gently re-warming the affected area in a warm environment is advised
Frostbite
•Frostbite occurs when skin becomes so cold, that the
skin and underlying tissue freeze
•It may look white and waxy and will feel hard to the
touch
•Treatment begins with removal from the cold environment and placing the affected area in warm, not hot,
water, until re-warmed
•Seek further medical attention as required

Hypothermia
•Hypothermia is an abnormally low body temperature
– less than 34°C (as compared to normal body temperature of about 37°C)
•People suffering hypothermia may act inappropriately
with uncharacteristic stumbling, mumbling, and fumbling, as their body temperature continues to lower
•Early recognition and prompt medical attention is
crucial. Left untreated, hypothermia may progress to
coma and/or death
•Call 9-1-1. Don’t forget to protect yourself from the
factors that originally lead to the patient’s situation
•Gentle re-warming should start as quickly as possible,
including: removal of wet, or constrictive clothing; covering with blankets, or sleeping bags; and protecting
the person from further heat loss (wind, moisture and
contact with cold surfaces)
•Dress in layers – it’s easier to remove layers, when
warm, rather than not having enough layers, when
cold

What a great year 2014 has been. I want to thank you
for another year of continued support. It is a privilege
to serve Calgary-Hays and I always appreciate hearing

Show your support for the
troops all year round
The Support Our Troops licence plate gives Albertans
another way to show their
respect and appreciation for Canada’s brave service
men and women. Available since July 22, you can order
the new licence plate at registry agents across the province, for a one-time fee of $75, in addition to regular
registration fees.
Of the $75 purchase price, $55 goes to the Support Our
Troops Program, administered by the Canadian Forces
Morale and Welfare Services, to help current and former
Alberta members of the Canadian Armed Forces and
their families. The rest of the cost covers production and
distribution.
The new design pays tribute to the first four soldiers, all
members of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry
(PPCLI) based in Alberta, who died during Canada’s mission in Afghanistan. The artwork is titled ‘Fallen Comrades of the PPCLI.’
Displaying this licence plate on your vehicle shows your
support, respect and pride for these and all members of
our Canadian Armed Forces, all year long.

The holiday season is upon us again and I am filled with
the Christmas spirit. I have much to be grateful for and I

Tougher tobacco laws will protect Alberta youth
The amendments to the Tobacco Reduction Act and
Tobacco Reduction Regulation will be phased-in over
time. Starting immediately, the legislation will:
•Ban smoking in vehicles with minors present; and
•Prohibit the selling, giving, lending or supplying of tobacco products to minors, similar to federal legislation.
Starting June 1, 2015, the legislation will: Require minimum pack sizes for specific tobacco products – this will
eliminate smaller, more affordable options; and ban certain flavoured tobacco products. Each year, tobacco use
is linked to about 3,000 deaths in Alberta. It is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Canada.
Remembering Alberta and the Great War at the
Provincial Archives of Alberta
This year marks the centennial of the outbreak of the
First World War—a conflict that defined the course of
the modern world, with reverberations still felt today.
The war marked Canada’s “coming of age”, and Alberta,
still a young province, was equally changed by the tragic
events.
The exhibition is included with admission. Until August
2015 it will be on display. The Provincial Archives is open
from 9 am until 4:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday, and
until 9 pm on Wednesdays.
Federal funding flowing to Alberta communities
With this agreement the Governments of Canada and
Quick Facts: Canada’s Gas Tax Fund transfer has provided $14 billion to Canadian communities to date. Over
the 10-year life of the New Building Canada Plan from
2014 to 2024, the Gas Tax Fund will provide close to $22
billion in funding for municipalities. In total, the New
Building Canada Plan will provide $53 billion in funding
to communities across the country over the next decade. For Alberta, this represents more than $3.2 billion
in dedicated federal funding, including almost $942 million under the New Building Canada Fund and an estimated $2.27 billion under the federal Gas Tax Fund.
Since the beginning of the program, over 2,000 projects
have benefitted from funding under the Gas Tax Fund
in Alberta.
For example, during the 2013 construction season, the
federal Gas Tax Fund supported projects such as:
•City of Calgary – East Calgary Waste Management
Facility
•City of St. Albert – Storm Water Infrastructure Rehabilitation
•City of Lethbridge – Helen Schuler Nature Centre Expansion and Rehabilitation
•Strathcona County – Ardrossan Wastewater to Regional
Plant (new Force Main-pipeline)
•Town of Manning – Treated Water Tower Reservoir/
Pumphouse Upgrade
•Eligible investment categories under this Fund include: drinking water; wastewater and solid waste;
public transit; community energy systems; local roads
and bridges; capacity building; disaster mitigation;
broadband connectivity; brownfield redevelopment;
regional and local airports; and projects supporting
culture, tourism, sport and recreation.

Why do people clink

It used to be common for someone to try to kill an
enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to
a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for
a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the
glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only
touch or clink the host’s glass with his own.

T’was the night before Christmas, when all through the
house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by
name!
“Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.
His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”
