Whether your budget is large or small, whether it’s classic chic you’re after or
the latest fashion accessories, whether it’s culinary delights you want or rare
antiques – in Münster you’ll find things you won’t find anywhere else. And, what
makes shopping in Münster a particularly relaxing experience is the short distances to walk in the city centre. So … what are you waiting for?
Prinzipalmarkt
This is the heart of the old Hanse city –
with its unique flair. Under the arcades
there are stores full of elegant fashion,
high-class specialist stores, jewellers’
and antique shops.
Salzstraße
This, the oldest trading street in Münster, is today a shopping paradise with
a broad mix of styles. Home not only
to exclusive shops and the very latest
stores, but also to gems of Baroque
architecture.
Ludgeristraße
This, Münster’s busiest pedestrian
precinct, is home to a special attraction – the MÜNSTER ARCADES, a
high-class shopping mall on three
levels which also has some excellent
restaurants
Rothenburg / Aegidius Market
This boulevard leads past high-class
shops and local individualists to the
newly designed square which opens
up between Aegidius Market and the
newly converted State Museum.
Hansecarré and Stubengasse
This shopping quarter, awarded the
German Urban Development Prize,
opens up entirely new vistas for a
stroll through Münster’s city centre.
Space for attractive shops and stylish
restaurants.
Old Fish Market
A new portal to the city centre presents its elegant gabled architecture.
The picture is characterized by attractive courtyard restaurants, a children’s
store full of things to do and see, and
exclusive fashion shops.

Stroll among mulled wine and Christmas lights
When the Prinzipalmarkt is bathed in lights and the smell of pine
trees, mulled wine and roasted almonds fills the streets, then the
festive season has arrived again in Münster. Santas and Christmas bands roam the streets, the shops and stores are festively
decorated – and no fewer than five Christmas markets weave their
magic in the centre of Münster. In such surroundings looking for
presents is fun – and the romantic Christmas atmosphere is all
part of it.

Münster in winter
When the snowflakes dance through
Münster the city is transformed into a
winter wonderland – and the slopes by
the Promenade are turned into a paradise for toboggans. The absolute highlight is if it’s cold enough and Lake Aa
freezes over, then the whole of Münster celebrates by skating on the lake.
Münster – the traditional Christmas
spirit
Anyone who has been to Münster at
Advent thinks it’s wonderful – not
St. Paul´s Cathedral
least because of the unique backdrop
the city provides, captivating everyone
with its charm. And whether you go
and see the Christmas fairytale at the
city theatre, go along with one of the
pre-Christmas guided tours of the city
with tales of traditions and customs,
or go and admire the priceless 18th
century Neapolitan crib in the City
Museum – magical moments are guar
anteed with any of the special things
on offer.

19. – 21.09.2014 | Reopening of the LWL Museum
of Art and Culture – 7,500 m2 of space for art and
culture
After five years of construction work an event mark
ing the reopening of the LWL Museum of Art and
Culture will be held from 19. – 21.09.2014. The Staab
architects practice in Berlin designed a house for
art, marked by restrained elegance and a dignified
presentation of the museum’s art collection. The
museum has 1,700 m2 more, with the old and the
new parts connected. Four inner courtyards open up
a new public space in the heart of Münster. There
are 1,000 exhibits, ranging from the Middle Ages to
present-day art, in 51 rooms. The first special exhibition in the new rooms, to be held from 8 November 2014, will be “Bare life. From Bacon to Hockney”,
showing London painting, 1950 – 1980.
26. – 28.09.2014 | Commemoration of the
consecration of the Cathedral
Münster’s landmark, St. Paul’s Cathedral, was consecrated 750 years ago. To mark the anniversary,
there will be a big festival to commemorate the consecration under the motto “Welcome to Paradise”,
with meetings and church services, catecheses and
discussions, or presentations and talks. There will
also be exhibitions, cultural events and a big open
air concert. And the Cathedral can be experienced
differently, more intensively.

Watch out: art about!
Indoors or outdoors – it’s your choice.
Every ten years – the next time will be 2017 – Münster becomes the Mecca of the worldwide art scene. Today
the motto – “Art in public spaces” – also characterizes the city. Most recently, Tobias Rehberger transformed
some unprepossessing switchboxes at the railway station into an exciting art project. Of course, there is also art
indoors – in over 30 museums and galleries! People are looking forward especially to autumn 2014, when the
LWL Museum of Art and Culture reopens after a long period of conversion work – with more floorspace and
exciting architecture.

They are the hidden switchpoints which regulate commu
nicate and traffic behind the
surface of urban life: the grey
switchboxes familiar to every
one. The community associa
tion ISG Bahnhofsviertel Münster and the City of Münster
itself have embarked on a venture in the area around the city’s
station. The internationally renowned artist Tobias Rehberger has redesigned the switchboxes there, turning grey cubes
into imaginative seating which
provides new accents for the
cityscape. And artificial moonlight shines over it all. The new
places are ideal for a romantic
tête-à-tête, or for coming together, or just for looking at.

The green side of Münster
Take a deep breath!
What would Münster be without its lush greenery? For one thing it provides our healthy city climate, long-term; but it also
contributes to the well-being of our guests. For many people it is important to spend their holiday in an environmentfriendly way. So, for example, you can come to Münster by train and explore the city by bicycle. Also, many hotels have been
awarded a label for the sustainable, environment-friendly way they run their business. If you want to take a little time out
to relax between shopping, sightseeing and enjoying the culture, you’re sure to find a peaceful green oasis to unwind in.
The Promenade
Where once the city walls stood, the
green belt of the Promenade (4.5 km)
now encircles the Old Town. The Promenade – lined with lime trees and
closed to cars – is an important route
for anyone out and about on foot or by
bike, at the same time offering green
surroundings in the immediate vicinity
of the city centre.
Around Lake Aa and the zoo
Very close to the Old Town is Lake Aa,
inviting visitors to enjoy the greenery.
All-weather zoo
A definite maritime flair can be enjoyed on the Lake Aa terraces. One
highlight, especially for families, is of
course the all-weather zoo – and right

Münster for families
If you’re out and about with children,
all the greenery in Münster offers a
welcome diversion – with lots of space
for them to play, run around or relax.
But there are other things on offer
for children too. For example, did you
know that Felix the Rabbit, that chil
dren all over the world dream of, comes
from Münster? And something that
will interest teenagers is the fact that
Münster is also home to skater guru
Titus Dittmann, who made skateboards famous in Germany and is still
a trendsetter today.
Have fun in the Maxi Tower
So you’d like to go to the museum
– but your children are not exactly
thrilled at the prospect? In the Maxi
Tower in the Stadthaus there’s a lot of
fun and activities on offer for boys and
girls aged 4 to 10. They can climb, rest,
play, build something or have a book
read to them. No advance booking
required, and the children are looked
after for up to 3 hours – € 3 per child.
By the way – you can rent a buggy here,
too.
Maxi-Sand
If your children are still small and need
a rest, why not visit the Maxi Sand Oasis
at Syndikatplatz? The huge sandpit
in the city centre is open from May to
September (Mon – Sat from 11 am)
and is designed for children up to the
age of 6. After 6 pm the buckets and
spades are exchanged for a volleyball
nets, and it’s time for the grown-up
sand lovers to have their fun!
Special offers for children
We’ll be pleased to help if you’re looking
for other activities for your children –
e.g. concerts, theatre and guided tours
of the city for kids, as well as special
programmes in museums. You can find

More Münster with us!
Beyond the city limits
Although the city of Münster has so much to offer, so much for you to experience, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to
explore the picturesque parkland scenery of the Münsterland beyond the city limits. And how better to do it than with our
No. 1 mode of transport, the bicycle? Take a relaxed ride on the exemplary network of cycle paths … and soon you’ll be
wondering whether you’re still in the city or already in the countryside.
>> www.tourismus.muenster.de – Link: Münster is well worth seing – Palaces and castles
We’ll be happy to help you on your
way, for example with our cycle maps:
“Cycle Tours round Münster”, “The
100-Castles Route” or the “Ideas and
Tips for Cycling Tours” set. These show
you some destinations well worth vis
iting in the immediate surroundings of
Münster. Just two examples:
Rüschhaus House
Along with the Residence, St. Clement’s
Church or the Erbdrostenhof, this pretty manor house is one of the master
pieces which the Baroque architect J.C.
Schlaun built in Münster. Once a place
where the poet Annette von DrosteHülshoff sought refuge and worked,
the house is today a museum dedicat
ed to the poet. The French Baroque
garden is also well worth seeing, and
is open to the public all the time.
Hülshoff Castle
This, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff‘s
birthplace, is located a little farther out
towards Baumberge. One of the sleepy
moated castles so typical of the Münsterland, it has been in the family’s possession since the 15th century. Parts
of the castle house a Droste Museum,
and the wide open gardens contain a
wildlife enclosure and a garden island
inviting visitors to take a walk. Guests
can relax in the café restaurant in the
castle.
