KENNEDY THEATRE 2014
A Message from the Chair:
Unrivaled...
Award-winning...
Innovative...
Kennedy Theatre productions offer
a breadth of experiences that can’t
be matched anywhere else. From the
haunting tale of La-‘ieikawai to the
haunted husband in Blithe Spirit, from
giants and slam poetry and dance
to the ravished world of the Congo,
from the timeless battle of the sexes
in The Taming of the Shrew to a world
premiere about marriage equality,
the Department of Theatre and Dance
showcases our students
in myriad forms.
Our students compete on the national
level. Recent graduates Yasu Ishida, MFA
in Theatre for Young Audiences, won the
prestigious Doyle Fellowship from the
American Alliance of Theatre Education,
and Meg Hanna, MFA in Scenic Design,
placed second in the National Kennedy
Center American College Theatre Festival
for her design of Thread Hell. Last year,
our productions, designers and performers
won numerous local Po‘okela Awards.
Come see our current MFA, BFA and BA
candidates as they hone their skills, led by
our internationally-renowned faculty.
This year marks the inaugural production
of our newest program--Hawaiian
Theatre. Under the leadership of Kumu
Tammy Haili‘o-pua Baker, her production
of La-‘ieikawai will be a visual and aural
feast, reminding us what a unique and
exquisite place we live in.
Come explore what the world of theatre
and dance has to offer, right here at
Kennedy Theatre!

The smash comedy hit of the
London and Broadway stages, this
much-revived classic offers up a
fussy, cantankerous novelist, who is
remarried but haunted (literally) by
the ghost of his late first wife after
she is called up by “happy medium”
Madame Arcati. Charles’ present
wife is none too pleased with sharing
her house or her husband with the
spirit world. Worldly and unworldly
personalities clash in a battle to see
which “blithe spirit” will win.
A pre-Halloween treat!
Roald Dahl’s classic book about the
24-feet-high Big Friendly Giant and
a little orphan named Sophie brings
to the stage some of Dahl’s most
memorable characters. The BFG and
Sophie team up to save the children
of England from the child-eating
giants, Bloodbottler, Fleshlumpeater,
Bonecruncher, Meatdripper,
Childchewer, and Gizzardgulper.
Though the book is intended for
young readers, audiences of
all ages will laugh out loud
at this loveable character.
The inaugural production in the
University of Hawai‘i at Ma-noa’s new
Hawaiian Theatre program. This stage
adaptation of the traditional Hawaiian
mo`olelo (story) of La-‘ieikawai will
feature hula, oli (chant), mele (song)
and will be performed entirely in
Hawaiian. Co-sponsored by the UHM
Hawai‘inuia-kea School of Hawaiian
Knowledge and Kawaihuelani Center
for Hawaiian Language.
UHM Dancers leap off the page in
this year’s Annual Dance Concert with
slam poets and beatboxers. Guest
artists include choreographers Eric
Stern from the popular Dr. Schaffer
and Mr. Stern Dance Ensemble;
Joe Goode from the Joe Goode
Performance Group of San Francisco;
and Nelson Hui, composer, performer
and recording artist from Hong Kong.
