The Service Auction is a fundraiser that has been an important part of the community spirit, social life
and fiscal health of The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood since the 1960’s. This years’ Service Auction, the
47th, is supported by donations from well over 100 members and friends of the USR. Thank you all!
Donations of food, wine, dinners, hikes, concert tickets, vacation homes, art, baskets, and much, much
more are all listed in this catalog. Items are either raffled off or auctioned to the highest bidder. Winners
can take home their treasures and/or mark their calendar to attend or collect the services/ events that
they’ve won throughout the year.
How does the Service Auction work?
 Service Auction Items
o Raffles ~ Buy raffle tickets throughout the month of January after services during coffee hour
and / or the night of the auction. All the wonderful prizes are listed in this catalog.
o Silent Auction ~ From 6:30-8:00, enjoy appetizers and beverages while you bid on the silent
auction items. Write your bidding number legibly on the bidding sheet for the items you
want. When the silent auction closes at 8:00 the highest bidder wins! Items available at the
auction will be marked with the winner’s name so you can take them with you when you leave.
If you win a service, the person who offered the item will contact you.
o Live Auction ~ At 8:00, find a seat in Anderson and enjoy coffee, tea, and dessert while our
always-entertaining auctioneers present the live auction items. Use your paddle to bid on the
items you most desire.
 Reservations Required
o When you make your reservation, the reservation volunteer will need to know how many
spots to reserve and whether you need childcare. You will be billed for the cost of attending,
o To make reservations contact Robin Ritter at the following:
 [email protected] (preferred form of contact)
 201-445-4343
o The cost is $25 and includes hearty appetizers, open bar, coffee, and dessert.
 What if I can’t come? Can I still bid?
-2-
o Absolutely! If you can’t make it to the Service Auction, just fill out the absentee bidding form at
the end of this catalog and the absentee bidders will do your bidding for you!
 Childcare
o Children will be cared for in the RE space where they will have snacks, movies and fun.
Feel free to bring blankets or sleeping bags so your little ones can really get cozy.
o When you make your reservation, inform the reservation volunteer how many children you
will be bringing. A donation of $10 per child is suggested.
 I want to help!
o We still need volunteers to assist in clean-up and set-up, and much more.
o Contact the following to volunteer:
 Ralph Pleasic @ 201-913-2964 or [email protected]
Auction Tips and Tricks
 Bring this catalog with you to the auction!
o We cannot stress this enough. Bring it with you! We do not have “extra” catalogs.
 Plan ahead!
o Before the night of the auction figure out what you are interested in bidding on and your
maximum bid. Choose an event to bid on with a group of your UU friends, the more the
merrier!
 Make your reservations early!
o Space is limited! Information on how to reserve your spot is on the previous page.
 Buy raffle tickets early and often!
o The more raffle tickets you buy, the better your chances to win!
 Claim your stuff!
o Baskets and other items available at the auction will be labeled with the winner’s name so you
can take them with you after the auction.
o After the auction a list of everything you won will be mailed to you along with the amount you
owe.
 For dinners, outings, or concerts with specific dates, the seller will send out a reminder
to buyers a week or two before the event.
 For one-on-one services where dates are at a mutually convenient time, the buyer must
contact the seller to make arrangements to collect the item won.
o All services must be collected before next year’s auction unless otherwise arranged with the
seller.
 Confused?
o Join the club! Please ask us questions at:

We will view the Great Falls from the overlook and upper park. By late spring the upper park restoration should be
complete and the bridge over the falls open again. We will visit the raceways and then go to the nearby Paterson
Museum. It is housed in the old Rogers Locomotive building. Rogers was one of the leading builders of locomotives
in this country and at one time made as many as 100 locomotives a year. One of Paterson’s locomotives that
helped build the Panama Canal is on display outside the museum. Inside we can look at the first Holland
submarine, which was retrieved from the Passaic River, and study a collection of Colt Pistols from the Colt factory,
which was located within the park.
Lunch will be at Griselda’s, one of the best of many Peruvian restaurants in Paterson and only a block from the
museum. Their Parihuela is outstanding!
