ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
THE ORDER OF WORSHIP FOR JANUARY 4, 2015
2nd Sunday after Christmas
8:30 a.m.
GATHERING OF GOD’S PEOPLE
PRELUDE
“Pastoral Symphony”
(Psalm 103:8-12)
The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in
love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he
does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our
iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is
his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far
has he removed our transgressions from us.
*RESPONSE
Handel’s ‘Messiah’
*OPENING SCRIPTURE
(John 1:1-5; 14) (Unison)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things
came into being through him, and without him not one thing came
into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life
was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and
the darkness did not overcome it. And the Word became flesh and
lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a
father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE
(Unison)
God of birth, God of joy, God of life, we come to You as a people
hungry for good news. We have been so dead to miracles that we
have missed the Savior’s birth. We have preoccupied ourselves
with pleasures and have overlooked the joy You offer us. We have
been so concerned with making a living that we have missed the
life You set among us. Forgive us, gracious God. Open our eyes
and our hearts to receive Your gift; open our lips and hands to
share it with all humanity in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our
debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
(Please partake of the bread as it comes to you, symbolic of your own need
for a relationship with Christ. Hold the cup until we all may commune
together, symbolic of being the Body of Christ.)

This DVD series captures live and unscripted conversations with a group of non
Christians and Timothy Keller as they dialogue about the group’s doubts and objections to
Christianity. Timothy Keller brings together faith and intellect, theology and popular
culture, modern-day objections and historic Christian beliefs. Bonnie Pattison, PhD,
facilitates this series and expands answers utilizing a Biblical framework and context.
Particularly relevant and valuable is her background in Cultural Christianity that will give
additional in-depth insights and perspectives to the discussions.
