About Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
For more than 60 years, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has had one goal: to reduce the suffering
caused by cancer through advanced clinical care and cutting-edge scientific research. As a principal
teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, we are able to attract many of the best and brightest
physicians in the world to pursue this mission.
At Dana-Farber, we are committed to a multidisciplinary, compassionate, and collaborative model of care
that truly puts patients and their families at the center of all we do. We work in teams organized around
combating specific types of cancer, and patients have easy and direct access to the full range of specialists
they may need.
Our scientific research is focused on understanding the biology of cancer cells in order to develop more
effective therapies that improve patient outcomes. Our lab scientists and clinicians collaborate closely to
quickly translate findings from the lab into therapies that can be delivered to patients in our clinics.
Dana-Farber is a founding member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC), a NCIdesignated Comprehensive Cancer Center. DF/HCC harnesses the expertise and resources of DanaFarber and six other Harvard-affiliated hospitals and research institutions to conduct research focused on
improving the understanding and treatment of cancer. Dana-Farber is also a founding member of the
National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of the world’s leading cancer centers, working
together to develop cancer treatment guidelines and research that improves the quality and effectiveness
of cancer care. In addition, Dana-Farber has earned “Magnet” status, recognizing the Institute’s highquality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice.

Breast Oncology
The Breast Oncology Program at the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana-Farber provides comprehensive care for women with all
types of breast cancer, including ductal carcinoma in situ, infiltrating (invasive) ductal carcinoma, lobular carcinoma in situ, infiltrating (invasive)
lobular carcinoma, inflammatory breast cancer, Paget’s disease, and phylloides tumor. We offer specialized expertise for patients with metastatic
breast cancer or breast cancer during pregnancy, as well as an Inflammatory Breast Cancer Program, and the Program for Young Women with Breast
Cancer which addresses the unique needs of women under 40 who are diagnosed with breast cancer. Experts in the Cancer Genetics and Prevention
Program can also create a personalized plan for women at higher risk for developing breast or ovarian cancer.
Patients receive care from a multidisciplinary team of health care professionals with extensive experience and expertise in the unique needs of
women with breast cancer. This includes medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists specializing in breast cancer, as well as radiologists,
pathologists, reproductive medicine specialists, plastic surgeons, oncology nurses, genetic counselors, and more.
Clinical research is a vital aspect of our mission at the Breast Oncology Program. We believe that outstanding clinical care is directly linked to an
active program of clinical research. Physician-researchers take the questions that arise from their experiences in the clinic, answer them through
clinical trials, and take this new knowledge back to the clinic, where it can benefit patients.
At any given time, dozens of research studies involving hundreds of patients are under way within the Breast Oncology Program. These studies are
broad in scope: investigations of prevention and early-detection strategies, new therapies, novel combinations of existing treatments, quality-of-life
studies, and laboratory analyses of tumor samples to better understand the relationship between tumor types and patient outcomes.
Our team is also leading the way in treating breast cancer as a complex family of diseases rather than a single disease. All tumors are assessed for
molecular markers that guide therapy and help determine eligibility for clinical trials exploring innovative new therapies.

Cutaneous Oncology
The Cutaneous Oncology Program is dedicated to the treatment and diagnosis of patients with lymphomas that originate in the skin; basal,
squamous, and merkel cell carcinomas of the skin; and cancer therapy-related dermatology, including cutaneous graft-versus host disease and skin
reactions to chemotherapy agents. Our team provides consultation and second opinions, evaluation and management, prevention and early
detection counseling, genetic counseling and risk assessment, screening of high-risk individuals, and histopathologic diagnosis and review. The
Cutaneous Oncology team also works closely with the Melanoma team in the diagnosis and treatment of pigmented lesions.
Patients are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of specialists and have access to specialized treatments, including Mohs surgery and other skin
surgeries, immuno- and chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and photopheresis. In addition, patients may have the opportunity to participate in the
numerous clinical trials evaluating new therapies.
Research performed by our faculty is at the cutting edge of oncology, cell biology, and immunology as they relate to skin. Many of our doctors are
involved in the Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in Skin Cancer grant, awarded by the National Cancer Institute to promote
interdisciplinary translational research and to facilitate the exchange of information between the scientists who study skin cancer and the
physicians who treat it. Additionally, the program leverages the resources available through the Harvard Skin Disease Research Center, one of six
such centers nationally that investigate a variety of skin diseases, including cutaneous oncology.

Early Drug Development Center
The Early Drug Development Center (EDDC) specializes in conducting clinical trials that evaluate the safety and efficacy of new drugs for cancer
treatment. In this program, specialists who are researching exciting new ways to kill tumors or halt their growth conduct small, carefully designed
studies of experimental drugs that are in early phases of development. These trials include Phase 1 dose escalation studies, as well as studies
confirming proof-of-mechanism of novel agents and preliminary efficacy studies in patient populations with tumors harboring specific genetic
alterations. Such experimental treatments provide patients with the most innovative treatments emanating from cutting-edge scientific research.

Gastrointestinal Cancer
The Gastrointestinal Cancer Center provides advanced, integrated care for patients diagnosed with or at risk for colorectal, pancreatic, stomach,
liver, gallbladder, bile duct, and esophageal cancers, as well as neuroendocrine and carcinoid tumors. Patients are cared for by a multidisciplinary
team of specialists who use advanced, innovative techniques to diagnose and treat gastrointestinal malignancies.
Our team is a leader in delivering a personalized treatment approach for many gastrointestinal malignancies. All colorectal cancers are tested for
KRAS and BRAF mutations, with therapy tailored according to the tumor genotype. In addition, treatment for patients with esophageal and gastric
cancers is provided based on each patient’s individual HER2 amplification.
The Center offers genetic counseling and testing to patients with a family history of gastrointestinal cancers. This program also conducts research to
understand the genetic causes of cancer and to evaluate new diagnostic tests for early detection, novel endoscopic techniques, and new medical
therapies to prevent gastrointestinal cancers.
The clinical investigators in the Center conduct basic and translational research to develop more effective treatment techniques for patients with
gastrointestinal cancers, and understand the biology of gastrointestinal malignancies.

Head and Neck Cancer
The Head and Neck Cancer Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is the region’s most comprehensive program dedicated exclusively to patients
with head and neck cancers. Specialists evaluate and treat all types and stages of head and neck cancers, from early lesions to rare and challenging
cases. Our team has extensive experience in managing the complex treatment required for head and neck cancer patients. The patient’s care team
includes specialists from numerous disciplines including head and neck surgery, medical and radiation oncology, pathology, dentistry, oral surgery,
reconstructive surgery, nutrition services, social work, speech, voice, and swallowing therapy.
The creation of new and better ways to treat head and neck cancers, and manage the side effects of treatment, is an important focus for the
physician-researchers in our program. As a result, patients have access to trials of innovative treatments developed at Dana-Farber as well as at other
U.S. medical centers through national collaborative groups.
Our group is a leader in understanding and treating oropharynx cancers caused by HPV. Patients with this type of cancer undergo HPV molecular
testing which is the most important marker for prognosis and treatment planning in head and neck cancer. Our clinicians have also developed
therapeutic trials to address treatment intensity for patients with HPV tumors.

Neuro-Oncology
The Center for Neuro-Oncology provides expert care for patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors, spinal cord cancer, and neurologic
complications from cancer and its treatment. Care is coordinated by a team of clinicians specializing in neuro-oncology, neurosurgery, radiation
oncology, psychosocial oncology, nursing, neuropathology, neuropsychology, social work, and genetic counseling. Through our multidisciplinary
clinic, patients have the benefit of meeting with our team of surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists at one time and in one place to develop
individualized treatment plans.
Clincal care is supported by a strong clinical and basic science research program. The clinical research program is a leader in neuro-oncology clinical
trials, including immunotherapy, targeted therapies and inhibitors of angiogenesis. In addition, by routinely testing patients with glioblastoma and
anaplastic gliomas for common mutations, we are able to tailor treatment plans for patients. The basic science program aims to enhance the
understanding of neurologic cancers, including why tumors develop in the brain, and the mechanisms that drive tumor growth and resistance to
therapy. Our investigators also collaborate with the North American Brain Tumor Consortium, National Cancer Institute, and pharmaceutical
companies to develop new approaches to the treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors.

Palliative Care (Adult)
Palliative care is: “…an active and systematic approach to addressing issues that are important to patients and families in the setting of serious
illness … aimed at yielding improvements in quality of life and relief of suffering. It is focused on optimizing people’s function and comfort in the
shadow of a limited life expectancy in all of the domains that make us who we are: physical, emotional, spiritual, sexual, social and financial” (Ferris
FD, et al. J Clin Oncol 2009; 27:3052-8).
Palliative care is not limited to care at the end of life — that is hospice care. Palliative care is appropriate for all cancer patients, from diagnosis on,
and we focus both on helping them and providing support for their families. Our inpatient and outpatient adult palliative care teams include expert
physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, social workers, pharmacists and chaplains.
We offer outpatient consultations for patients cared for by Dana-Farber oncologists, and inpatient consultations at Brigham and Women’s Hospital
to patients with cancer and other diagnoses cared for at Brigham and Women's Hospital. In addition, our Inpatient Palliative Care Unit team cares
for oncology patients with the most severe palliative care problems.

Thoracic Oncology
The Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology provides expert care for patients with lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma, mediastinal and thymic
tumors, and metastatic cancers to the chest. Because most patients require therapy that includes a combination of chemotherapy, radiation, and
surgery, care is coordinated among a specialized team that includes thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists,
radiologists, pathologists, nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, dieticians and nutritionists, and social workers. We perform routine
genomic testing of tumors from all patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer using the latest next generation sequencing methods to
evaluate for changes in over 300 genes. We offer a wide variety of therapeutic approaches and clinical trials of novel therapies based on the genomic
makeup of the individual patient’s cancer.
In addition to providing superior standard treatment options, the thoracic oncology team is involved in clinical and laboratory research to identify
innovative treatment strategies for thoracic malignancies. Our physicians are also leaders in national cooperative group studies through the Alliance
for Clinical Trials in Oncology. As a result of this cutting-edge research, most patients will be offered the opportunity to participate in a clinical
trial as one of their treatment options.

Radiation Oncology
The Department of Radiation Oncology plays a central role in treating adults and children with cancer. Our clinicians have specialized knowledge
in treating each type of cancer for which radiation therapy is indicated, and we work collaboratively with specialists across our disease-specific
treatment centers to develop an individualized radiation therapy plan for each patient, and provide supportive resources before and after treatment.
Our team also has an active research program that includes both basic (laboratory) and clinical research. Our research often involves collaboration
with other departments as we strive to better identify and treat cancer, and to develop ways to deliver higher doses of radiation to the tumor area
while reducing the effects to the surrounding healthy tissue.

Pediatric Blood Disorders
Our Pediatric Blood Disorders team is internationally known for its wide range of clinical, research, teaching, and laboratory services. We have
special expertise treating patients and families with all forms of non-malignant blood disorders, including anemia, bone marrow failure syndromes,
bleeding problems, blood clots (thrombosis), platelet disorders including idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), sickle cell disease, and white
blood cell disorders.
Patients receive care from a team of pediatric hematologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, and physician assistants. Immunologists,
pathologists, clinical dietitians, and other specialists also contribute to this team. As a group, we develop individualized care plans that meet the
medical, physical, emotional, and informational needs of our patients and families. We believe families and referring physicians are especially
important in the long-term health management plans of children with blood disorders, and we involve them in all treatment decisions.
We oversee the pediatric arm of the Boston Hemophilia Center, a joint program with Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Our CAP/CLIA-certified
pathology laboratory delivers the highest quality results, and, with our oncology colleagues, we offer access to New England’s most successful and
advanced pediatric stem cell transplantation program.
Our basic science and clinical researchers are recognized for their contributions to improving the understanding and treatment of pediatric blood
disorders. We are one of six Centers for Disease Control-designated thalassemia treatment centers, and one of five national research centers for
Diamond-Blackfan anemia. We also participate in a National Institutes of Health-funded clinical trial network, overseeing studies for thalassemia,
transfusion medicine, and hemostasis. Our discoveries frequently lead to new clinical treatments that minimize the impact of these often life-long
conditions.

Pediatric Brain Tumors
Our Pediatric Brain Tumor Center is the largest pediatric brain and spinal cord program in New England and is globally recognized for its expertise
in treating young cancer patients. The Neuro-Oncology Program brings together pediatric neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, neurologists, neuroradiologists, and radiation oncologists, among other specialists from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital, who are entirely
devoted to treating young patients with brain tumors. This team meets weekly to coordinate care while ensuring the highest possible functioning
and quality of life for every patient and their family.
As one of the leading research centers for the study of pediatric central nervous system tumors, our program offers access to advanced technologies
like the Intraoperative MRI, as well as unique treatment options through our extensive clinical trials program. We are members of the Pediatric
Oncology Experimental Therapeutic Investigator Consortium and were one of nine founding members of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium.
These affiliations, as well as internally initiated medical studies, enable us to offer many treatments unavailable at other institutions.
For survivors of all ages, we provide specialized long-term care through the Stop & Shop Family Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Outcomes Clinic, which
helps survivors address any late-effects caused by brain tumors and their treatments, such as physical, psychological, social, and intellectual
challenges.

Pediatric Surgical Oncology
Surgery often plays a critical role in overall cancer treatment. Our pediatric surgical oncology team consists of experts with extensive experience in
various types of cancers, including neuroblastoma, brain and bone tumors, as well as other rare and hard-to-treat cancers.
Because of the number of cases we see, our pediatric surgeons have a true appreciation of the issues that may be encountered. They are able to bring
