This Week
Saturday 17th January 2015
Bob Green, Mick Curtis, Duncan Brown and Mick Ayliffe on a hare and tortoise MTB ride to Bike Beans at Ashtead on a
very windy and showery morning.
“Tea and a bacon sandwich please.”
“Would you like a granary torpedo?”
“A What?”
“Have your bacon in one of these, a granary torpedo, they’re lovely.”
“Why? Don’t you have any bread and butter?”
Sunday 18th January 2015
Val, Vinny, Andy, Dave E, Bill and Trevor to Horsham but Bill and Dave went for any early coffee at Henfold Lake. The
others rode on to Horsham. Mick was having a late start with the e-bike/train to Horsham but was not seen there.
Rumour has it that he went to Henfold and probably met Dave and Bill. The ride back from Horsham was via
Wimlands to Box Hill then up Little Switzerland and Epsom Downs. 56 miles.
Mick missed the meet due to missing gloves, he then missed 9.16 train, the 9.46 was cancelled, he got his money
back and left for Henfold, halfway up the Paris-Roubaix road he decided his legs were too cold so he rode back home
and sulked for the rest of the day.
Tuesday 20th January 2015
Trevor to meet the OHG but riding only to Red Lane before Henfold where he returned to Epsom for the
Warfarin blood test, which was OK but with a retest in two weeks. There was a beautiful ride up Little Switzerland in
brilliant sunshine. Home by 12 o'clock. again, as last week, before the rain started! 28 miles
Norman Luhr and Mick Ayliffe to Notcutt’s, Cranleigh to meet up with Wombat. Beautiful bright cold morning on way
out. Thunder, lightning, icy rain, lovely rainbow over Okewood Hill and 40 minute wait on a very windy Ockley
station on the way home.
Thursday 22nd January 2015
Andy H and Trevor with two others of the OHG to Bricks Smithbrook Kilns near Cranleigh. Started at Dauphin Sports
at Box Hill where Noel found he had a flat tyre. apparently happened while he was waiting and talking! Trevor also
suffered a puncture before the coffee stop. Despite this Trevor arrived back before 3 pm in Epsom where rain and
showers had occurred during the morning but these were not experienced by the riders. 65 miles at a brisk pace,

Dear All
You may have helped me and Sutton Cycling Club in the past to organise the Cycling Championship for Sutton Primary
Schools. This year will be the tenth edition, this is certainly the first, and probably still the only, such event in the
country. It is to be held at the Walch Memorial Sports Ground, Northey Avenue, SM2 7HJ, from 1300 onwards on
Wednesday 11th March.
We need helpers , preferably sensible , useful people with some knowledge of cycles. You are amongst the people I
know who meet these criteria. It would be great if you can help us on this afternoon , it really is a great treat to see
youngsters enjoying cycling but we , of course, have to ensure things go off safely.
It happens whatever the weather. We need helpers to be around from 1200 hrs. on the day. Please let me know if
you can help out.
Reply to this e mail or ring me 0208 641 2850 / 07778192739.
If you have any friend that may like to help bring them along please.
Thanks and best wishes for 2015.

The Forty Plus CC HQ sent us the fwg information re Decathlon's Club of the Year competition. Thought you might be

Mick, A bit longwinded but worth the read - perhaps pass on to others.
Cheers, Peter Hatch.

Once again many thanks for the news letter very much appreciated.
Going back to the Balham rough I’ve just come across a 1958 result sheet when J.B broke the course record, you
recorded , a 1.53.10.not bad for a19 year old.

Some correspondence about the Old Joe’s OHGOHG Tuesday cafe stops at Notcutt’s.
OHGOHG Café Rides
Those that receive "Letter from America" will have already have read the following suggestion.
"Since the sad loss of Cliff, who encouraged us all to ride together as a group, I understand that people have
generally been riding to the café stops on their own. In particular the number attending Notcutt’s on a Tuesday has
declined to just one or two. Tanhouse Farm is still very much the favourite but it has been suggested that it might be
prudent to find a café closer to home and more central for everyone. It would be interesting to get a discussion going
on this if possible." Bryan Staples
Hi Bryan,
Reference the Tuesday ride, in my opinion the problem is pretty simply down to numbers & by that I mean numbers
of riders of the "appropriate" age group. Without being able to drum up more support & let's face it guys of your age
group must between you know all the possible candidates the ride will probably die off. If there aren't at least a
guaranteed two or three guys (or gals) turning from a larger "pool" where is the incentive. It is easy to understand
why Norman doesn't always bother to drive over from Westerham or wherever if he's going to be on his Jack Jones! I
consider myself a "second claim" Tuesday rider as I'm still only 60! but I like to ride out with my own thoughts at my
own pace that gives me a good workout then I enjoy the chinwag & cuppa & more sedate ride home with whoever. All
the best, Wombat
Hi Steve,
Thanks, understand and appreciate what you are saying. With a more central location I was hoping maybe it would
encourage more people like myself, who are no longer up to riding all the way to Notcutts and back, to ride a shorter
distance. As we no longer ride in a group, due to the disparity of abilities, those that wish could ride as far as they
liked and then meet up with those that can attempt a shorter ride. The traffic now makes it too difficult for me to
drive and then ride the last part to Notcutts as I have been doing. My thoughts were that somewhere like Cobham,
Ripley or Dorking, if we could find a suitable meeting place, might fill the bill.
Yours is the only reply I have had so far, it will be interesting to see if anyone else bothers!
Best wishes,
Bryan Staples.
Re Tuesdays OHGOHG at Notcutt’s.
I’m a fringe opinion since I am now an ebike/Senior Railcard cyclist.
The drop off in attendance at Notcutt’s is a pity but I’m not too bothered about it. My present route out over
Coldharbour from Dorking station and back up Tanhouse Lane gives me a lovely ride if the weather is Ok. In principle
I’m a bit against going to the same place by a similar route every week but I admit it’s very convenient especially for
those only able to come out occasionally and it avoids the hassle of ringing round. I would give priority to getting to
the OHG venue if battery and Southern Rail accommodate it although this has been less possible recently. That
introduces a bit of variety. I was quite pleased when I called in at Henfold on New Year’s Day. They’ve got a lovely
log fire but of course that uses the same roads as Tanhouse.
Page 3
Weekly Briefing 15/01/2015 | [email protected] | www.clarencourt.com | 07806 284911
So change the Notcutt’s venue if you want or let it wither on the vine and just meet at Tanhouse on Thursdays.
Evolution not revolution that’s me, I really don’t mind.
Mick
"Café Stops
It has been mentioned by a number of people that the OHG/OHG group ride mainly on their own
these days and that the Notcutts venue is very poorly attended.
The suggestion is that we change the venue for Tuesdays to a more local point where people can
ride directly if they wish or use a less direct route if that suits them for a longer ride. The
following are the suggestions so far:
Beare Green – Blu-Moon cafe
Pilgrim Cycles at West Humble Station
Cobham ? Suitable cafe
Capel ? Suitable café
Ripley ? Suitable cafe
Dorking ? Suitable cafe
Abinger Hammer – Post Office
Reigate
Clandon
Denbies
Leatherhead
Another suggestion has been that maybe if we plan to meet later in the day this would suit those
that travel part of the way by car, thereby missing the peak commuter period.
The Thursday meet at Tanhouse Farm is well attended and there is no need to look at this.
Any constructive thoughts from those who are involved by replying either to Mick or Bryan
Staples would be appreciated in an effort to make things easier and more enjoyable for the older
ones amongst us."
