8. Even though Pa and Professor Herbert are very different kinds of people, they learn to respect each
other by the end of the story. Why do you think this happens? Relate to both characters.
ANSWER: It happens because Professor Herbert is very patient and open-minded, he treats Pa with a lot
of respect. Pa comes very angry and he says he believes only what he sees, so professor Herbert shows
him things. Pa also teaches Professor Herbert about his life. He teaches him not to kill animals and the
value of being honest.
9. After Dave tells Pa about his punishment, Pa says, "A bullet will go in the Professor same as it will go
any man. It will go in a rich man same as it will a poor man." Why does Pa react to Dave's punishment
in this way? Give information from the story to support your answer.

ANSWER: Pa is insulted that that the other students didn't get the same punishment as David just
because they had the one dollar to pay. He feels that Dave got the punishment only because they are a
poor family. So, he wants to go to school and "fight" for respect.
10. a. Compare and contrast Pa's opinion of Dave's school before and after he goes there. Give
information from the story to support your answer.
ANSWER: Before Pa goes to school he thinks the students are not studying anything important on those
field trips. He believes they should learn with the help of books in the classroom only. After Pa goes to
school he realizes things have changed. The “hands on” teaching approach is used. In addition he
understands that there are things that cannot be seen.
b. At the end of the story Pa says, "he must pay his debt fer th' tree and I'm goin' to hep 'im." What can
we learn about Pa's character from this quote? Give information from the story to support your answer.
ANSWER: We can learn from this that Pa is a proud person and not ashamed to work hard when he
believes it is the right thing to do. He helps Dave sweep the floor and doesn't want his son not to pay his
debt.

have to face the fact that it was his responsibility when the cracked cylinder heads were shipped.
14. What is the conflict between the Deever and Keller families in the play? Give information from the
play to support your answer.
ANSWER: Keller and Ann's fathers were partners, but Ann's father was convicted of sending cracked
cylinder heads to the army and causing the death of 21 pilots, while Joe was exonerated. Ann's father is
still in jail. In addition, Steve claimed in court that Joe Keller told him on the phone he would take
responsibility, but Joe Keller denied the phone call.
15. Each female character in the play has an important role. Choose ONE of the following characters and
discuss her role: Kate, Ann, Sue. Give information from the play to support your answer.

ANSWER: Kate: she's the one that covers up for Joe throughout the story, but in the end she's also the
one that has the "slip of the tongue" when she says Joe was never sick, by doing that she reveals the
truth. Ann: she's the one who knows Larry committed suicide, from the letter he sent her. She brings out
everything. By doing that Joe is forced to face the truth that he's responsible for his son's death, which
leads to him committing suicide. Sue: she brings up the money issue. She represents the American
society, which Is materialistic, and shows the conflict between materialism and idealism. Because she
doesn't allow Jim to do research, although that's what he wants to do in life.

16. a. At the end of act I, Kate says, "be smart now, Joe. The boy is coming. Be smart." What can we
infer from this quote? Give information from the play to support your answer.
ANSWER: We can understand that Kate knows Joe is guilty. However, she's afraid George wants to reopen the case. That's why she warns Joe not to say anything. But eventually she's the one who reveals
the truth.
b. How does the phone call from George at the end of act I influence Keller's behavior towards Chris?
Give information from the play to support your answer.
ANSWER: Keller suddenly agrees to help Chris and do anything he can to make the marriage with Ann
possible. Keller even suggests adding Chris' name on the sign. He tries to make Chris be on his side, in
case something happens.

ANSWER: The quote talks about the importance of reading to a teenager's education and knowledge
about life. That is the reason why Mr. Cattanzara puts so much emphasis on George reading books.
George quit school when he was 16. If he wants to pick up his education he needs to read books
because this is how he can have a chance for a better life. He might also learn from the books how to
solve his problems.

Make a connection between the above quote and the poem. Give information from the poem to

ANSWER: The quote says that taking chances in life is the way to advance. Similarly in the poem we see
that the traveler chooses the road that was less traveled by. He dares and isn’t afraid of challenges. He
doesn't go for the "sure thing" and that has changed his life.
