Music Notes An Associate Minister at the First UU Church in Nashville, Jason Shelton is also a prolific composer, with “Standing on the Side of Love” and “The Fire of Commitment” among his many credits. Ignatius Sancho (c.1729 to 1780) was born into slavery but eventually rose to prominence in English society; he is thought to be the first person of African descent to vote in a British election! The iconic Duke Ellington wrote thousands of songs for the stage, screen and songbook; his "In a Sentimental Mood" quickly became a standard after its composition in 1935. One of the Irish band U2's most elegiac songs, “MLK” has enjoyed a second life in the choral arrangement by Bob Chilcott, formerly of the King’s Singers. After its publication in “Songs of Protest and Praise from South Africa,” (1984) “Siyahamba” was adopted by churches all over the world, and is included in numerous hymnals. R. Nathaniel Dett (1882 to 1943) was the first black student to complete the 5-year program at Oberlin (the alma mater of our own Organist and Pianist), after which he toured as a concert pianist, later pursuing composition, in which he often incorporated African-American folk songs and spirituals. “Other Sheep” is from his last piano suite, “Eight Bible Vignettes,” and is an impassioned cry on behalf of Black Christendom. – Daniel Ratelle Announcements Sunday Offerings in January go to UU Groups This Sunday, our offering is in support of the UU Justice Ministry of California. UUJM advances justice in our state by cultivating and connecting leaders and communities, and by empowering the public voice of those who share UU values and principles. Their justice program focuses in the areas of economic justice, environmental justice, immigrant justice, and LGBT Equality.
