Church Hymn
From all who dwell below the skies,
Let faith and hope with love arise,
Let beauty, truth, and good be sung
Through ev’ry land, by ev’ry tongue.
De todos bajo el gran sol
Surja esper‿anza fe, amor
Verdad, y‿belleza cantando,
De cada tierra, cada voz.
Church Aspiration
May love be the spirit of this church,
May the quest for truth be its sacrament,
And service be its prayer
To dwell together in peace,
To seek knowledge in freedom,
And to help one another in fellowship,
This is our Aspiration.

Music Notes
An Associate Minister at the First UU Church in Nashville, Jason Shelton is also a prolific composer, with “Standing on the Side of Love” and “The Fire of Commitment” among his many
credits. Ignatius Sancho (c.1729 to 1780) was born into slavery but eventually rose to prominence in English society; he is thought to be the first person of African descent to vote in a British election! The iconic Duke Ellington wrote thousands of songs for the stage, screen and songbook; his "In a Sentimental Mood" quickly became a standard after its composition in 1935.
One of the Irish band U2's most elegiac songs, “MLK” has enjoyed a second life in the choral
arrangement by Bob Chilcott, formerly of the King’s Singers. After its publication in “Songs of
Protest and Praise from South Africa,” (1984) “Siyahamba” was adopted by churches all over the
world, and is included in numerous hymnals. R. Nathaniel Dett (1882 to 1943) was the first
black student to complete the 5-year program at Oberlin (the alma mater of our own Organist
and Pianist), after which he toured as a concert pianist, later pursuing composition, in which he
often incorporated African-American folk songs and spirituals. “Other Sheep” is from his last
piano suite, “Eight Bible Vignettes,” and is an impassioned cry on behalf of Black Christendom.

Samson and Delilah is the one story from the Jewish Bible that has really become a part of pop
culture inspiring soap operas and rock songs. But what is the actual story in the context of ancient Israel and is there a spiritual message here? This is the topic of our UU Christian Study
Group as we continue our journey through our "spiritual archaeology" with a DVD from the
History Channel.

The Climate Justice Group hosts an important discussion about the link between climate and
diet. Come hear from "Planet-Based Diet" team members from SanDiego350.org explain the
connection and share some personal food choices that reduce green house gas emissions significantly. For example, a four-person family skipping steak once a week for a year is like taking
their car off the road for nearly three months. The animal agriculture industry and public policy
will also be discussed. Please RSVP to James Long at 619-436-9435.
