We would like to wish all our friends and customers a
very happy and prosperous new year in 2015!
In 2014 Heat Merchants branches in Rialto, Galway,
Finglas, Limerick and Blackpool were upgraded to reflect
our refreshed branding and to showcase the latest
products available.
Tubs & Tiles in Sandyford, Cork, Galway, Limerick and
Tralee have also been refurbished and showcase the
latest brands in sanitary ware, showers and tiles. Early
in 2015 we will see the opening of our new Tile Giant
branch on Kylemore Road in Dublin - this extensive
showroom has an extensive range and a specialist trade
area to cater for busy professional tilers and plumbers.
We have added a training centre in our Business Support
Offices in Athlone which now provides an ideal central
location for training for both our customers and staff.
We have installed working models of renewable energy
technology including Solar PV, air source heat pumps,
and solar thermodynamic in addition to boilers, stoves,
heat emitters plus an extensive plumbing product range.
As we grow and develop our business we continue
to add to our brand portfolio and introducing new
and innovative products to the market to meet the
demands of home owners and developers in addition
to helping our customers meet their obligations under
new legislation.

is put into the water of a sealed heating system, as you would a can of inhibitor. It works by
actively reducing the surface tension of the water in your heating system, reducing the air
bubbles that travel through the water, so that your heat transfers more rapidly from your

heat the property in the process.

Construction Industry Conference,
provides insights on sizing radiators.
The terms BTU, kW and Delta-T are seen alongside almost
every piece of heating equipment yet it is surprising that
even in today’s energy conscious environment that some
customers do not fully understand their meaning or
significance.
The simplest way of explaining these terms are:
“The BTU (or kW) is a measure of how good a radiator is
at heating a room at standard temperature; the Delta-T
value defines what that standard temperature is.”
All catalogued radiator outputs must be displayed at a
50oC temperature difference also known as Delta T50
which is the European standard EN442 and this is a
change from the previous standard which stipulated that
catalogue outputs were to be stated at 60OC temperature
difference or Delta T60 which is now obsolete.
The European standard EN442 was introduced to bring
Ireland and other EU countries into line with European
regulations on quality standards & energy conservation.
It also ensures that European radiator manufacturers
are working from the same reference point in terms of
outputs and not over stating their outputs.
It is important to note that a radiator will have a higher
BTU output if it is quoted at Delta-T60 than it would do if
quoted at Delta-T50 and will appear to be more efficient,
requiring less water to produce more heat over a shorter
period of time, even though in reality it is exactly the
same output.
Follow the Golden Rule: “If it appears too good to be
true, it probably is!”
Buyer Beware! Unfortunately not all suppliers currently
publish outputs in accordance to EN442, outputs can be
overstated to gain a false competitive advantage. This is
not in the best interest of the end-user or installer, who
could find themselves with an under-sized product not
fit for purpose. Stelrad are proud to admit that all their
radiators are designed, tested and certified to EN442
standards.
Delta T50 & Condensing or High Efficiency Boilers
In order for a modern day condensing boiler to work
properly the heating system must be designed in
accordance with Delta T50. If we have a flow temp of
70OC & a return of 50OC this ensures the boiler is in
condensing mode as due point for a condensing boiler
is between 50OC - 54OC. This is when the boiler works at
its optimum efficiency and saves you money.
It is therefore vital that Delta T50 is adhered to in
system design or a condensing boiler will not operate
in condensing mode properly and the boiler will fail
to deliver the energy efficiency levels claimed by the
manufacturer. For further information, please contact
