Man faces
drug charges
ANDERSON COUNTY -- Several
incidents were reported to local law enforcement agencies over the past two weeks
including everything from a stolen trailer
to possession of marijuana.
•Christopher Allen Bridges, 29, of
Haynie Mill Road near Belton, is facing
charges of simple possession of marijuana
and having an open container of alcohol
in his vehicle. He was arrested on Jan. 18
about 6:25 p.m. Bridges was spotted driving
a blue Camaro in Honea Path.
•Thieves trying to steal a trailer loaded
with stolen items lost the items as the load
came loose in front of Anderson County
Sheriff’s Office deputies.
The deputies were in the area of Beaverdam Road near Williamston on Jan.
10 when they saw a white four-door truck
occupied by two Hispanic males, pulling a
trailer that separated from the truck. The
deputies tried to flag down the occupants,
who fled the scene. A woman pulled up
to the scene, saying that a neighbor saw
someone stealing the trailer from her yard.
•A woman reported that a purse and
its contents, along with a cell phone, were
stolen from her pickup truck parked on
Griffin Road near Belton. The incident
occurred Jan. 10. Later, it was determined
that the theft may have occurred at AnMed
in Anderson.
•A vehicle license tag was stolen Jan. 17

Path police reports.

NANCY’S FANCIES was named the Merchant of the Month in Belton
by the Belton Alliance. Owner Nancy Smith, center, was presented
with a sign and banner last week by Belton Alliance president Bob
Daniel, left, and Dr. John Neal IV of Townsquare Chiropractic. A new
winner will be named each month. Mrs. Smith is the first to receive the
award under the new program. The BA is open to all area merchants,
not just those in downtown Belton, where Mrs. Smith’s business is
located. Nancy’s Fancies features a wide variety of items ranging
from antiques to greeting cards and even sewing alteration services.
Upgrades to BMS in the works
BELTON AND HONEA PATH - Upgrades to Belton
Middle School are among the items slated for the summer
in School District Two, according to superintendent Dr.
Richard Rosenberger.
“We have plans to upgrade the BMS hallways and
restrooms, those haven’t been done in a long time,” said
Rosenberger.
A committee from BMS will have input on the plans
presented last week by architect Scott Powell of Craig,
Gaulden and Davis.
“We hope to get that work finished over the summer,”
he added.
Trustees discussed the renovations during a meeting
held Jan. 12.
In addition, longtime trustee Brenda Cooley was honored for 15 years of service on the board. The trustees
also recognized outstanding students, along with staff
member Jenny Smith at BMS who developed a website
for career day activities.
Other items handled during the board meeting included:
•A public “open checkbook” will allow district residents to see the work being done as a result of the passage
of a one-cent sales tax referendum.
“We want our patrons to know what the money is
being spent on,” said Rosenberger.
•Two new human resource officers - both accredited
police officers - are being hired for both Belton Middle
and Honea Path Middle schools. The officers will be
able to assist at elementary schools in each town. A grant
application could reduce the cost of the officer in Belton,
but the district budgeted $100,000 to cover both officers’
salaries and benefits.

BHP boys remain undefeated
HONEA PATH -- The BHP
boys’ basketball team continued
to make school history last week
as they defeated Seneca 78-65 and
Pickens 79-62.
The Bears (10-6, 6-0) have
won all six of their region games
and sit alone at the top of Region
I-AAA.
“We played our most complete
game of the season against Seneca,” said coach Russ Tysl.
Sparked by a 21-8 second-quarter run, the Bears took a commanding 43-24 lead to the locker room.
Malcolm Williams and Juwann
Abney led the Bears with 22 and
19 points, respectively.
“We led the Bobcats by 10 or
more points for over 20 minutes
of game action,” said Tysl.
BHP picked up another region
win Friday over Pickens, but Tysl
was not as pleased with his team’s
play.
“We didn’t play well,” he said.
“I didn’t think our effort and intensity was there. We slept-walked
through a lot of it. We had spurts
where we played hard, but not
anywhere near putting together 32
minutes.”
Xavier Hawthorne hit a trey
early in the game for a 3-0 lead.
Shortly afterwards Pickens took
its only lead of the game at 4-3.
It was short lived as Hawthorne
passed to Marcus Williams for the
alley oop 15 seconds later to regain
the lead.
The Bears went on an 17-4 run
and led 22-8 at the end of the first
quarter.
Although the Blue Flame cut
into the lead by two points over
the next eight minutes, BHP still
took a commanding lead to the
locker room.
Poor defense allowed Pickens
to get back in the game during the
early part of the third quarter. The
Flame pulled to within eight points
at the midpoint. It was the closest
they would get.
BHP fought back with a field
goal by Michael Starks and a fastbreak lay-up by Abney. With three
seconds left in the quarter, Abney
tipped in a missed free throw for
a 60-39 lead at the end of three
quarters.
During the game, the Bears
were on the line for 30 free throws,
making 17. The long ball was good
as the Bears hit eight shots from
outside the arc.
Hawthorne had three, while
Aaron Taylor and Bailey Smith
had two each and TC McCullough
one.
Hawthorne led BHP with 14
points, followed by Malcolm Williams with 12 and Marcus Williams
and Taylor with 11 each.
“Pickens plays hard for 32
minutes,” said Tysl. “They and
Palmetto play harder than any team
in our region. If we can take something out of this game from our
opponent it is to play hard no matter what. We played hard when we
decided to. I wasn’t pleased with
that. We didn’t get back on defense
several times and we worked on it
a lot in practice.
“However, a win is a win and
we need to be excited about that.
I’m also proud of our fans tonight.
Our kids were out of school today
for a long weekend and yet they
showed up to support us. Our
student section is awesome. They
travel. They’re here. They come
out in bunches and get us motivated
and ready to play.”
BHP was on the road Tuesday
at Wren. Results will be published
next week. The Bears will host
a double, double-header Friday
against Palmetto.
The JV girls will play the first of
the four games beginning at 4 p.m.
The JV boys follow and then the
varsity girls and boys will play.

Transition game workin
PICKENS -- Run, run, run!
That’s what the BHP JV boys
basketball team is doing and it has
given them a 5-1 region record.
“We are a transition basketball
team,” said coach Anthony Pitts.
“We don’t shoot well in the half
court. We like to go, go, go. Sometimes that’s good and sometimes
its bad.”
The JV Bears (7-4 overall) have
won their last five region games.
